Has anyone conceived at age 39 with a less than perfect lifestyle?

Asking as I read an article recently that you have the same chance as conceiving at age 39 as you do in your 20s if you improve your lifestyle, take supplements, exercise, etc etc.

Wondering if anyone conceived later in life (in fertility terms!) without doing the above?

yes, I conceived at 40 by tracking my ovulation. I don't smoke at all and don't drink much, not overweight but not a gym bunny, try and eat healthily but not averse to an odd bag of crisps.

Readyfortheschoolhols · 14/07/2018 09:49

I conceived at 42, took folic acid as recommended. Bfp third cycle of ttc.

I conceived at 39 after making not one single lifestyle change. I was probably reasonably fit — I don’t drive, and walk or cycle everywhere — and am vegetarian, but nothing else at all, and I conceived the first time we had unprotected sex, to both our astonishment.

Entirely straightforward pregnancy, and the result is now a beautiful, stroppy, stubborn six year old.

I conceived at 39 within 3 months of trying. After taking almost 3 years to have my first.
I wasn’t very healthy and am overly fond of wine Grin
I did rejoin a slimming class to take the focus off ttc, and I lost a stone or so. I had previously been forcefeeding DH zinc and all sorts of vitamins as we were ttc DC1.
I had a lot of problems before I had DC1, I swear I had endometriosis as the pain was excruciating for two weeks out of four.
An emergency c/s somehow sorted all that out and I’ve never had so much as a second of cramp/pain since!
I had DC2 just before I turned 40.

I conceived 2nd month ttc at 35 and 38. Used ovulation test kit to track. I don't smoke or drink, have a bmi that's at the higher end of normal but not into exercise at all, big sweet tooth so choc a holic! BUT i complrtely appreciate how lucky i am and that my story could have been the total opposite.

Merryoldgoat · 14/07/2018 10:00

Yes. Conceived just after 39th birthday. I’m very fat with PCOS. Drank alcohol etc.

Conceived first month.

I would recommend trying to be healthier before pregnancy though, my weight was a terrible burden throughout pregnancy and I was very careful so weighed less than booking weight a week after giving birth.

I had an ELCS for hypertension that wasn’t responding to treatment. It was non-complicated, anaesthetic worked very well and lost minimal blood. Completely healed within 12 weeks and no post-op infections.

My son is now 5 months.

I conceived DC2 at 39 after years of secondary infertility and unsuccessful fertility treatment and miscarriages and gynae surgery after DC1. All stemming from endometriosis I didn't know I had. I never gave up drinking totally but I was generally fit and healthy and ate well.

But I put conceiving DC2 down to sheer bloody luck as I absolutely felt in last chance saloon. I had a mental cut off in my head of 40 to stop all the treatment etc. Conceived on or around my 39th birthday.

forevernotyoung · 14/07/2018 10:04

I conceived at 38 without changing anything (social smoker and drinker) did work out regularly and diet was generally ok (ate pretty healthily at home, had take away/dinner out at least once a week) When I realised I was pregnant I then started taking folic acid, supplements, better diet etc
However this was my 3rd, DC 1 & 2 had been conceived late 20s/early 30s.
So I put it down to me and DH both being 'very fertile' rather than it being related to my lifestyle. DH didn't change his lifestyle at all for any of the 3 DC. He is a healthy eater and exercises regularly but on the flip side he smoked and partied a lot too.

I fell pregnant aged 39. We weren't trying but weren't using any contraceptive. I walk daily, don't smoke and rarely drink but I am overweight by a couple of stone (5'10) and certainly prefer cake to fruit and vegetables.
We were extremely lucky as we'd ended a pregnancy a few years before due to spina bifida

Lycanthropology · 14/07/2018 10:10

Conceived at 40 whilst actively trying not to. Not super healthy at the time and a nightly wine drinker.

XiCi · 14/07/2018 10:11

Yes conceived at 39 with no lifestyle changes at (was a big surprise, we weren't ttc). I ate reasonably well and was a healthy weight but had a very active social life at the time so drank a fair bit of alcohol and smoked. Of course the baby put paid to all such shenanigans Smile

Hermie12 · 14/07/2018 10:13

Yes. I conceived dd at 40. Just took folic acid, I dont really drink, Ive never smoked but was probably about half a stone overweight, had PCOS for years and T2 diabetes. Took 8 months which considering oh wasnt even in the same city for 2 of those was pretty good going! Just listened to my body and got to know when I was ovulating.

ParkheadParadise · 14/07/2018 10:14

I fell pregnant at 38 without trying in fact I didn't realise until I was nearly 5mths. At the time I feel pregnant my life was very stressful. Not eating properly, drinking alcohol.

zeebeedee · 14/07/2018 10:14

Conceived at 39, despite using contraception, and being really careful.....

nolongersurprised · 14/07/2018 10:15

Yep, easily at 39. No changes to lifestyle although I was exercising and I eat reasonably well anyway. No supplements and still drinking a glass or wine a few times a week.

Moggie45 · 14/07/2018 10:17

Yes, conceived DS at 39. I did go to the gym occasionally, knew I wanted to conceive So had been taking folic acid. I was also very partial to wine. Went on to have DD at 41.

illhavethesalad · 14/07/2018 10:18

I conceived at 38 - had baby at 39, wasn't TTC. I have pcos, am vegetarian, BMI 25, eat fairly healthy, drink alcohol & take regular multi vitamin and omega 3 supplement. I am an ex smoker- gave up over 10 years ago. DS is now 22 months.

carrielou2007 · 14/07/2018 10:29

I had finished BF DC2 so was enjoying drinking wine again eating some not healthy foods and put some weight on so went back to SW and lost it. Non smoker not time for gym but walked to school with buggy when not at work. DC’s dad wanted us to get back together I really was unsure but went on mini pill just in case we did. He then had to stay st my house to look after DC whilst I ended up in hospital for an emergency op. Said ‘thank you’ Blush first time we had dtd in 2 years and that made DC3. I had him 4 weeks before my 40th I was in denial my whole pregnancy. DC’s dad proved what I had thought were his true colours - he did not want to get back together as soon as he found out I was pregnant. Plus I had to have 2 more operations whilst I was pregnant. He really is an arse!!

CazY777 · 14/07/2018 10:29

I conceived first child at 39, did exercise but regular drinking and BMI of 30. Husband wad 42 and smoked and drank a lot! It did take 2 years but I was under a lot of stress at work and as soon as that lifted I got pregnant. Obviously started taking folic acid etc and stopped drinking when I found out, BMI was below 30 at booking appointment due to nausea making me unable to eat!
