Just posting here for traffic.

I think it's vital all women be able to request a female HCP and get one, no questions asked.

I don't have a problem with known male doctors but that's me, not a rule for others.

I would refuse to allow a transwoman to examine me. I object to having someone with, at the very least, a problematic view of female bodies/genitals in close proximity to mine, however lovely they may be as a person.

I had a smear by a male doctor(wasn't a routine smear test) I was offered a female but wasn't overly fussed and didn't want to have to wait.

However it is absolutely the case that some women will want a female to do the task and there doesn't have to be any reason or justification for wanting that, and choice should always be offered.

I had a male doctor squish my boobs when I had a lump. I have had male gp so a smear. I've had a male doctor so a cervical biopsy and subsequently laser treatment on my cervix. I had a male doctor take a good look to see whether or not I needed stitches after childbirth.

My absolute worst medics l experience with my female body from a medical practitioner point of view was a female gp doing a smear. It fecking hurt and it shouldn't!

haribosmarties · 13/07/2018 16:04

Yes a smear. It was fine. I think its more about the person than the gender... I had a horrible experience with a woman who was putting in my coil.... Some medical staff are compassionate, skilled and patient and some arent and as far as I can see its not divided along the lines of gender.

Thingsthatgo · 13/07/2018 16:07

Yes, I have. I think that I have always been offered a chaperone though.

I've only ever once had a female gynaecologist. And all she did was to look at my case notes and suggest I have a hysterectomy. Everyone else male.

The one time I had a mammogram the person who did it was female.

That said, I absolutely the right to ask for a person of a specific sex.

TerfsUp · 13/07/2018 16:11

Ooops. I absolutely support!

daisyboooo · 13/07/2018 16:13

Had an internal examination by male doctor.
Was just the same as any examinations done by female doctor/ nurse.

Personally I didn't bat an eyelid & just wanted it over & done with asap. Female nurse was also present.

Troels · 13/07/2018 16:15

I had a male Gynaecologist who did my smears each year and pelvic exam too. No problem, very proffesional and businesslike

Iwantaunicorn · 13/07/2018 16:19

I’ve had smears and sti checks done by both men and women, and my fertility treatment was done by a man. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest which sex does it, but I absolutely believe in the right to request treatment from the same sex if that’s your preference.

Hope your mammogram goes well, and you’re ok.

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 16:19

Years of campaigning so that women have the opportunity to say they want a woman HCP. Then the next generation completely dismisses it-and implies that there is something wrong with a woman who might express a preference. Jesus Christ it's depressing.

LtGreggs · 13/07/2018 16:21

I recently had coil inserted by a male Doctor (that I'd never met before the procedure). Tbh I did feel a bit unnerved beforehand, but it was OK once he got going. Big girl pants up (or down, in this case...)

PurpleTrilby · 13/07/2018 16:22

Yes, had quite a few internal examinations from a male nurse to check for pregnancy when I was quite young and getting the pill represcribed. Also one smear, which he was actually better at than a female nurse, because it was quicker and got it over with as fast as possible. Not a problem for me at all, but if you don't want a male doing that, you have the right to be seen by a female instead, just ask.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 13/07/2018 16:24

I’m not sure if our practice nurse is male or female tbh but their smears are the same as smears carries out by the obvious actual women.

DidimusStench · 13/07/2018 16:26

I’ve had speculum exams and TV scans with male doctors. Weirdly always found them to be a bit gentler than female doctors!

hammeringinmyhead · 13/07/2018 16:27

I haven't but it wouldn't bother me. Although if I walked in for a smear and it was a man I would be momentarily taken aback because I've had quite a few and every nurse I have seen in my practice and my last one has been female.

The worst experiences I have had in the NHS have been from women with a high pain threshold and a get-on-with-it attitude. As if they power through anything and anything else means you're being a big baby/weak. I'm dreading birth in case I have a scary, no nonsense midwife who tells me to stop yelling and being dramatic, like my friend did!

Springtimeflowers · 13/07/2018 16:28

I have had male doctors give me internal examinations (pretty much a smear) during my pregnancies, and actually found them to be more gentle than the women. At my most recent one, the Dr asked the midwife to cover me back over with the blanket as we had to wait for a better light, to protect my modesty while we waited. Although I knew that he and the midwife were going to see 'everything' in a few minutes anyway, I really appreciated his thoughtfulness.

Headinthedrawer · 13/07/2018 16:29

Having a smear by a male student Dr in the 90s who kept getting it in the wrong place...the young nurse lent over and whispered in my ear "Well- he's obviously never gone down on a woman!".Made me laugh so much!

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 16:31

And not only is wanting a woman a bit wierd but male nurses/doctors are actually better! Hmm

Springtimeflowers · 13/07/2018 16:31

That being said - I don't think there's anything wrong with requesting a female, it's all up to personal preference.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 13/07/2018 16:35

Not smear but I had a sweep done my a male consultant when I was pregnant with my last child.

yearofthewoman · 13/07/2018 16:37

BertrandRussell you're not wrong, it's depressing Sad

PlatypusPie · 13/07/2018 16:37

No mammograms by a man but several smears by male doctors. I wouldn’t have an objection to a male mammographer.

SaffronSands · 13/07/2018 16:42

Had a vaginal ultrasound by male nurse. Also had an enema (eugh) given by a male consultant. Neither bothered me.

QuinnElle · 13/07/2018 16:46

And not only is wanting a woman a bit wierd but male nurses/doctors are actually better! hmm

Shock! Horror! Sometimes they are! The female doctor I had for one left me bleeding, male GP is amazing. People are people, some are better than others.
