i have men and women drs and nurses poke about "down there" no problem.
but I like the fact that where I go for mammograms its a women only space. no men are allowed(or children) its nice to have one place that is like that.

Gottokondo · 13/07/2018 17:27

Yes, I had smears and vaginal ultrasounds done by male doctors. They were very professional, careful and respectful. I do understand why some people would feel a bit more vulnerable when it's a male, especially if they haven't had a lot of these tests done. My experiences were absolutely fine though. I even wonder if men are a bit more careful as well, the times that someone hurt me were always when a woman did the procedure.

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 17:29

It's just an extension of "isn't he wonderful-he changed a nappy, you're so lucky" syndrome.

MistressDeeCee · 13/07/2018 17:32

I've had a smear & pelvic exam by male go, with female nurse present.

If you want a female nurse don't be afraid of saying so OP. It doesn't matter what other peoples' experiences are. If you're not comfortable you know why.

Downeyhouse · 13/07/2018 17:34

My lovely gynaecologist is male and has done all my annual smear tests for 20 years and all my OB care. He also delivered both dc.

I also have an annual mammogram and scan and this is done by a male doctor.

Never had a female doctor for either.

We are outside the UK where everyone has their own Gynae/ob for years. GPS don’t so smears here.

MistressDeeCee · 13/07/2018 17:35

Have some people already started saying men are better..? 🙄😴. The ways to jump to praise men for everything grow ever more
ridiculous ingenious

mistressdeecee

No SOME people are saying SOME men are better at this than SOME women. Just like every job.

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 17:42

Is there a single person who expresses a view on here saying they think women are better than men? There are lots saying that men are better than women.

Springtimeflowers · 13/07/2018 17:43

I would never make a sweeping statement of "men are better", as I can only speak of my experiences. However, in my personal experiences I have happened to prefer the male practitioners. There is nothing wrong with me or anyone else saying this, it's just what some may find - just like some may have the opposite experiences.

If however, the op wants a female that is absolutely her choice and there is nothing wrong in requesting this.

MistressDeeCee · 13/07/2018 17:47

Skaro I'm unsure how you missed the word S-O-M-E in my very 1st sentence

MiddlingMum · 13/07/2018 17:52

Smears sometimes done by a woman, sometimes done by a man. I don't care as long as the result is ok.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 13/07/2018 17:53

Nope saw the first one, I think you missed the one in between 'saying' and 'men' though.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 13/07/2018 17:54

And yes from my experience I've always preferred the male practitioners I've had too.

UpstartCrow · 13/07/2018 17:55

I had an intimate exam from a male gynecologist about 12 years ago but they asked first. I'm usually seen by female staff, and my GP put it on my medical notes.

VickyEadie · 13/07/2018 17:57

I've had made GPs do smears twice - and the second one made me resolve never to have a man again, because he was brutal and unpleasant. Menopause has made me find them extraordinarily painful and this bloke was awful about it.

VickyEadie · 13/07/2018 17:57

*male, not made!

kaytee87 · 13/07/2018 18:05

I would always rather a female for intimate examinations, wouldn't refuse a male but request a female when booking appointments.

There was at least 12 people in the room when my ds was born and half of them men. I noticed actually that all of the men did their best to put me at ease (clearly very professional) as they probably understood it could be off putting for me. The greatest one was the male anaesthesiologist who really calmed me down and breathed through my contractions with me while his colleague put the spinal in.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 13/07/2018 18:10

Never had a smear by a male nurse but have had internal examinations by male doctors. That didn't bother me. However I think out of convenience GP surgeries should always have a female nurse as you generally need a chaperone if it is a male and not everyone would want a male. I think most women would always go for a woman over a man for an intimate procedure.

Sheeparemyfriends · 13/07/2018 21:34

I had a male radiographer, surgeon and registrar for breast lump removal. TBH, I felt violated and it took ages for me to be comfortable with my DH after. I had requested female only, but was told they could not accommodate my request. I loathe being touched by anyone unless I'm ready and willing. I can't really understand why a man would want to be a gynecologist or obstetrician, doesn't quite feel right to me. Refused a male midwife, I'd rather birth alone thanks.

This

BoomBoomsCousin · 13/07/2018 21:40

I've had a male nurse for a smear and a male gynecologist for some issues I had before I got pregnant. It doesn't bother me at all. But I've never really been body conscious. I don't mind getting changed in a mixed group or skinny dipping with male friends. I only get bothered by men when they're being inappropriate,

If it bothers you, ask for a female practitioner. Smears are rotten enough without feeling uncomfortable about them.

RiddleyW · 13/07/2018 21:41

I wouldn’t want a male midwife and I’m quite comfortable saying so.

I get my smear tests and coil stuff done at a walk in sexual health clinic. I presume they do have Male HCPs there but I’ve never seen one. It’s great, they’re so much more skilled than the GPs or general practice nurses I’ve had before.

Pointless aside - I am generally the only old bird in a room full of worried looking teens. I don’t know why more women don’t use it for smears though they’re great.

BertrandRussell · 13/07/2018 21:41

I have a friend who's a gynaecologist He says that women's bodies are more clinically interesting than men's. And he likes making people's lives better-which he can often do quite easily.

BoomBoomsCousin · 13/07/2018 21:49

I could see, if you're going to be a doctor, it may be a little nicer in some ways to deal with illnesses that you aren't likely to face yourself. I also think the way our bodies can make new life is fascinating and a little awesome and I don't see why a man couldn't be just as wowed by that as a woman could. Not to mention, once you've qualified as a doctor, if you want a higher salary you need to find a specialism and so some will fall into it as the opportunity is there.

Miscella · 13/07/2018 21:57

So long as they are medically qualified to do the procedure I don’t care about their gender. I really don’t see why it matters.
