AIBU to not take folic acid during first 12 weeks pregnancy

Just found out that I’m pregnant and according to clear blue I’m 3+ weeks since conceiving which would be classed as 5+ weeks by a doctor.

I haven’t been taking folic acid; should I be worried? I’ve also got drunk on a handful of occasions, been to theme parks and smoked a few cigarettes! Obviously I wouldn’t have done any of this had I know I was pregnant. We’ve not been TTC and I only took a test to rule out why I’d been sick a few days this week.

Start taking FA now

zozozoo · 11/07/2018 18:50

Start now :) chances are everything's fine. Congratulations

Christ

Start taking pregnacare now (contains folic acid, plus vitamin d etc). You can't do anything about what has happened.

Obviously you need to stop smoking too.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/07/2018 18:51

Start now! Any pregnancy multivitamin has the folic dose you need. It is important and you can buy it cheaply and easily so get yourself on it.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 11/07/2018 18:51

That's a common scenario. Just start taking it now.

PotteringAlong · 11/07/2018 18:51

You were not unreasonable to not take it when you didn’t know, but you would be foolish not to start taking it immediately.

ConciseandNice · 11/07/2018 18:52

YABU. Start today!!!! Don’t worry about the past, we’ve all been there. Tomorrow is a new day. Congratulations!

In other words, you have behaved like almost every other woman since the beginning of time. You'll be fine.

StealthPolarBear · 11/07/2018 18:53

Start now. And congrats

Wellthisunexpected · 11/07/2018 18:53

Just start today. It isn't expensive (£1.50 for 90 tablets in morrisons).

DeadButDelicious · 11/07/2018 18:53

Start today!

Wetwashing00 · 11/07/2018 18:55

Yabu to not take it in the first 12 weeks. Do you know why folic acid is advised?
If you know now and are keeping the baby then you should start taking it.

QuantumPixies · 11/07/2018 18:55

It happens. Start taking it now. It’s really common to be in your position.

flakesaretasty · 11/07/2018 18:56

Start now. Yabu to even consider not, unless you're planning a termination.

coffeekittens · 11/07/2018 18:57

Just start taking it now, I’ve had 3+ on clear blues from a few days after I missed my period (so 4 weeks if dated medically). It doesn’t hurt to take them and right now is the perfect time to start.

Louise8888 · 11/07/2018 19:00

Thank you for your kind words. Sorry my opening post wasn’t clear - I’ll definitely start now (and am in no way considering not taking it). I was/am just worried as Dr. google says it’s most important during the 1st 12 weeks and I fear I may be towards the end of that already.

Nothisispatrick · 11/07/2018 19:01

I don't understand from your post why you wouldn't start taking it now? You've found out at a completely normal time to find out.

Louise8888 · 11/07/2018 19:01

Thanks for that @coffeekittens let’s hope clear blue is wrong!

5 weeks isn't towards the end of 12 weeks. Strange maths OP!

How is 5 weeks nearly 12 weeks? Confused

coffeekittens · 11/07/2018 19:05

@louise8888 those tests are just a bit of fun really, congratulations on your pregnancy and don’t worry about not taking folic acid up until now, I only started when I got a bfp (was ttc) as the stuff makes me feel as sick as a dog.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 11/07/2018 19:06

Folic acid is a fairly new thing to take in pregnancy. It was never heard of in the 70s etc. I really wouldn't worry.

Clairetree1 · 11/07/2018 19:10

what weird thing to say!

It is a naturally occurring vitamin in many foods, pregnant women have needed it, and eaten it, since the dawn of time!

OP, don't worry, you won't have had NONE, its present in many foods. Start taking the tablets now to be sure you are definitely getting enough.

PotteringAlong · 11/07/2018 19:10

It not nearly at the end of 12 weeks?! It’s not even half way there?
