To think this school lunch is a choking hazard?

A picture from Facebook from a local school. The red grapes don't look cut lengthways, I'm guessing due to being almost perfect spheres.

To think this school lunch is a choking hazard?

my mum's friend died from choking on sweetcorn that topped her pizza. Her son didn't know and thought she was asleep. She was a lone parent. sad for everyone involved.

Cutesbabasmummy · 10/07/2018 16:36

Mookatron yes I agree totally! Carb overload!

Tjzmummabear · 10/07/2018 16:37

that does look less than I'd give my 1 yr old .

Well said. Even children of 5 have been known to choke on grapes. Is it such a hardship to cut them?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/07/2018 16:40

The grapes ARE cut! Is that what the child chose? I queued for a school lunch today. The child in front of me chose, jacket potato with tuna, rice and bread as well as some cold pasta and sweetcor from the salad cart. Other things available were chicken curry, vegetable curry, cheese and beans (for jackets), roasted vegetables and various salad items. A lot of the children at my school do seem to choose the carb items! (I had the chicken curry with rice and a side salad - delicious it was 😊).

KurriKurri · 10/07/2018 16:42

Regardless of the cutted up grapes, I think the high carb lunch is probably because pizza is the main (and there will more than one main) and the other is sides. The child in the picture just happens to have chosen bread and potatoes and a green thing as his sides. Maybe he needs a lot of carbs and will burn it all off.

KurriKurri · 10/07/2018 16:44

Also probably in the minority, but I think that is an ample serving for a 4 year old

Ansumpasty · 10/07/2018 16:48

I agree, Kurri.

My 6yo wouldn’t finish that at lunch time. Probably the slice of pizza and that’s it

Stopyourhavering64 · 10/07/2018 16:48

I think the grapes should be made into wine [big grin]

DidimusStench · 10/07/2018 16:50

Mmmmmmmmm carb tapas

ch0c0milkrox · 10/07/2018 17:14

quadruple carbs, carbs in fruit too ...

Battleax · 10/07/2018 17:20

I chop grapes properly for my two (third on the way) and it’s nothing to do with pfb in my opinion, it’s common sense

That’s awe inspiring. Have a “Proper fruit chopper” award 🥇 🌟

Let me be clear, this child is not mine but it is also NOT a staged photo or fromma website, it was put on Facebook by a parent I know. My child doesn't attend this school.

I can SEE the grapes are cut. But I don't believe they are cut down enough.

Ask yourself why the guidance is to cut them lengthways...

It's to make them less wide and round, so, if you cut a spherical grape in half, that isn't enough to alter the sphere as the widest part of the grape still exists therefore it can get stuck in the exact same way as if it were whole.

The child chose his own food. I'm unsure if this was from a shirt set menu or a buffet. Parents were there to share the experience, hence the picture.

If you were anxious about your own kid, I'd think you were being a bit weird but understandably due to PFB starting school. As it is, I just think you're being a bit weird. Sorry.

Amanduh · 10/07/2018 23:16

Usually the kids choose their own food from the options so you get many strange combinations! Some of my class were fond of a roast dinner with beans (choices - pie and beans or roast dinner and veg) or pasta with potatoes (choices - pasta and garlic bread, chicken and potatoes) they like to mix and match! The grapes are fine 🙄

MollyHuaCha · 10/07/2018 23:17

No vegetables?

All I see is a small portion of cucumber (which is actually a fruit).

Lazypuppy · 10/07/2018 23:44

But they are cut lengthways!!

GirlInTheDirtyShirt · 10/07/2018 23:48

Jesus that’s a grim lunch. Starchy carbs with starchy carbs and starchy carbs. Not a healthy fat in sight.

Amalfimamma · 10/07/2018 23:56

I do think we need an eyeroll emoji as my eyes rolled so far back in my head I caught a glimpse of 1977.......

op

The grapes are cut lengthwise I'd be more worried about taking other people's photos of Facebook and posting them on mumsnet tbh

DidimusStench · 11/07/2018 08:12

Hang on, you’re getting your kno let’s on a twist over the size of grapes at a school you weren’t at and have nothing to do with but think it’s perfectly fine to save a picture from Facebook and post it in a public forum... Hmm

DidimusStench · 11/07/2018 08:13

*knickers in a twist that is!

DidimusStench · 11/07/2018 08:14

Ha! Amalfi X-post!

kaytee87 · 11/07/2018 08:16

But op, they are cut lengthways Confused
