to think no-one cares whether you like football or not?

It's the World Cup!

You'd have to be on another planet to not notice it's on at all but pretending not to know doesn't make you any better than the people who follow it avidly.

PS it's coming home... Football

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/07/2018 12:22

I know that England have won something but I have no idea what - I don't follow football or the rules of the World Cup so I haven't a clue how many teams they had to beat to be where they are or how many more games there are left to play. It's not pretending and I don't think it makes me better than anyone (odd concept, surely?) I'm just no more interested in football than I am Love Island or Bake Off (is that still going?), I don't know what's happening in any of them.

KlutzyDraconequus · 10/07/2018 12:24

to know doesn't make you any better than the people who follow it avidly

And yet people that follow it avidly seem to think they're better and more important than those that don't.

AmIthatbloodycold · 10/07/2018 12:26

I don't think I'm better. I'm just more interested in tennis

MaryMcCarthy · 10/07/2018 12:28

It really brings out the bitter in people, doesn't it?

Takes a certain kind of curmudgeonly misanthrope to react so dismissively and sneeringly in response to seeing people, indeed much of the country, genuinely excited and happy about something.

ReservoirDogs · 10/07/2018 12:29

I don't think people who do follow it do think they are better or more important though although I see a lot of killjoys moaning about it when they could chose to go about their life without whinging.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/07/2018 12:32

People being happy is great! Long may it continue! But ultimately football is like anything else, you either find it interesting or you don't. I was pretty excited when they found Richard III buried in a concrete car park, but also totally appreciated the sentiment of people who felt "wtf, why is this news??"

KurriKurri · 10/07/2018 12:35

I know England are in the semi final, but no idea about any other teams. I am not remotely interested in football. I do however enjoy tennis, but I wouldn't accuse people of trying to make out they are better than me if they didn't know who is still playing in Wimbledon.

My DD told me that one of the football commentators the other day said that anyone who wasn't watching the football should get a life - as if not being keen on football makes you a complete dullard.

I find football (or rather the supporters) aggressive, violent and misogynistic. I find the game utterly dull. I will not be watching the semi final or the final if England are in it (or any other country for that matter)

That doesn't make me better or worse than anyone else.
It has on several occasions recently made me subject to a boring blow by blow account of football games by taxi drivers who misinterpret 'I'm not interested in football' as 'please tell me all about the latest match one kick at a time'

If you enjoy football and can manage to enjoy it without smashing up property and hurting other people, good luck to you. But don't accuse me of trying to be superior by not enjoying the same sport as you. Unless you are 11 years old you are being pathetic.

MrsBlaidd · 10/07/2018 12:44

I know the World Cup is happening but haven't got the faintest idea what dates are involved or who is playing when.

No one cares that you like football so that's all even. Happy now Grin

Ps by chanting "It's coming home" you imply that football left these shores 50 odd years ago and hasn't been played since, that's either really insulting to all the people who currently play football as a hobby or job or woefully misinformed. If you're specifically talking about the trophy it was made in Italy so cannot conceivably go home in this tournament!

FortuneFavoursTheBald · 10/07/2018 12:46

I don't think I'm better than people who like football. I just hate every single thing about men's football and, therefore, give zero fucks about anything happening at the moment which means I know nothing about who is playing when and why.

FortuneFavoursTheBald · 10/07/2018 12:47

@poster ComtesseDeSpair

Exactly!

PirateWeasel · 10/07/2018 13:27

@ComtesseDeSpair Yes! People can be so scathing about the things I like, but I've learned not to pay any attention to them. My Facebook feed was full of people whinging about the royal wedding coverage (which I rather enjoyed watching) it felt almost like they were ganging up on the people who were interested in it, to make themselves feel superior in some weird way. I couldn't give a tiny pair of rat's trousers about football, but I respect those who do, and expect the same respect back from them about the things that matter to me. Everybody's feelings matter!

Greydog · 10/07/2018 13:38

I always think this sums things up!

OliviaStabler · 10/07/2018 13:51

I heard someone in the supermarket talking about it and naming the other teams who are still in. I knew about Croatia due to the news but couldn't have named the other teams if you paid me.

However I think it is great we have gone so far and hope we win!

littlepeas · 10/07/2018 14:12

I find it excruitatingly dull and don’t like the way it makes many people behave (including my dh, who shouts at the tv). I’m not going to pretend I’m interested to fit in, but I don’t make any fuss about not liking it either - if England win or lose my reaction will be impassive!

DobbyisFREE · 10/07/2018 15:33

You are not being unreasonable! It's not just the football either. Some people seem to get off on informing the world that they don't like something or they "must be the only person that hasn't seen / doesn't care about X" .... well good for you, you do seem like you care though because you keep harping on about it.

Incidentally I do not like football however lots of people seem to be quite excited and that makes me happy. I don't have an issue with people complaining about valid concerns (vandalism, DV, etc.) but people that just complain for the sake of it need to zip it.

I wish people would focus more on things that make them happy instead of pooping on everybody's parade.

Good luck and I hope that the ball thingy goes in the right direction and no-one falls over.

What I don't understand is this.

All I've seen this week is people complaining that it's only a game and nobody cares etc etc yet on Saturday I had cause to go out half way through the second half.

The town was deserted. Barely a car on the road and the ring road that would have been standstill at that time on a Saturday was empty. So where is everyone if they aren't at home watching the match?

To be fair I was at home watching old episodes of MasterChef as that's what I love Grin
