to think it's my Birkenstocks making my feet smell?

....Because it doesn't happen with any other shoes. They smell AWFUL, like vinegar. Its the cork bottoms birds. I've tried spraying the door and the shoe with mega strength deodorant to no avail. Anybody else had this issue? help, It's too hot for trainers but It's getting embarrassing.

Have you tried washing them? Mine eventually got too smelly so after 5 years I had to bin them

MiniDoofa · 09/07/2018 19:49

To wash mine I dampen them, sprinkle on bicarbonate of soda, leave for half an hour, wash it off whilst scrubbing them and leave to dry in sun.
Works well, but as PP said, they don’t last forever eventually can’t seem to get them clean.

PsychoSyd · 09/07/2018 20:20

When it's warm and sunny, put them outside in the sun to dry out. The UV light Laos has mild anti bacterial properties, which will help with the smell.

Thanks for the replies and for managing to read the original post haha obvs I meant I've tried spraying the FOOT and the shoe.
I haven't tried washing them as they're unbuckle leather - can't put them in the washing machine can you?

I washed leather Birks in the machine. 30 degree wash. They didn't look much different but it definitely freshened them up. They are a few years old and were quite smelly so the risk didn't worry me as they were almost unwearably whiffey.

UndergroundSun · 09/07/2018 21:09

I scrubbed mine in the paddling pool 🤣

Samewitches · 09/07/2018 21:34

Deodorant/ anti perspirant in ANY shoe makes the smell worse I've found, they're designed to stop them or cover them up, not to remove the smell once it's there. Much the same as if you had sick on a rug, an anti persp wouldn't do it. Wash them in hot water under the tap and go over the foot bit with a washing powder or try putting them through the machine with other items in like old towels, cleaning cloths etc if you was those. Or Zoflora them neat with a spray bottle and leave them to dry in the sun perhaps?

DroningOn · 09/07/2018 21:36

It's the cork, no getting around it. Cynical part of me wonders if its part of their planned obsolescence strategy to get you to buy a new pair, otherwise you'd own them forever and they'd be broke

dudsville · 09/07/2018 21:40

Mine do not smell... none of my sandals do. So really I shouldn't comment but I'm surprised to learn this is a thing. I will take extra care to sniff them all tomorrow!

holycityzoo · 09/07/2018 21:41

I have the white two strap leather ones and I put them on a 30 wash they are fine. Otherwise yes they smell like vinegar.

Squidgee · 09/07/2018 21:42

I've worn birkies for years and never had smelly feet.

Jorah · 09/07/2018 21:53

I've had mine for years and they don't smell at all!! And my feet can stink to high heaven in other shoes

brizzledrizzle · 09/07/2018 21:56

athletes foot powder is good at getting rid of stinky shoes...it works on my teenage son's trainers so it's bound to work on Birkenstocks.

AveABanana · 09/07/2018 21:57

I stuck mine in the freezer. I dunno about the smell but it was heaven in this weather.

MorningsEleven · 09/07/2018 21:57

Pervert!

AnyFucker · 09/07/2018 21:59

My birkies, or my feet, don't smell Shock

Mari50 · 09/07/2018 21:59

I wear Birkenstocks from April- September, it’s the only time of year my feet are lovely and fragrant.
Sadly when they are in any kind of covered shoe they stink.
I love summertime and not having stinky feet.

user1471530109 · 09/07/2018 22:01

I've only noticed a problem with my new pair this year! The old ones (3 years old) never stunk.
Freezer sounds like a fab idea!

rickandmorts · 09/07/2018 22:17

My feet don't smell in mine you heathens Shock

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 10/07/2018 00:49

Very well worn Birks go like this after a while.
If it’s a design you’re particularly fond of and they’ve stopped selling you can get them refurbed where they’ll put the upper on a new footbed and sole.

bsbabas · 10/07/2018 07:00

I always put my flip flops (plastic) in the wash every three days my feet are soo smelly otherwise
