Chicken Olives

Posting here for traffic, so I bought some chicken olives from the local butchers today and googled how long to cook them for but nothing has come up with the specific name chicken olive.

So aibu to ask if you've heard of a chicken olive - it's a chicken (thigh meat I think) wrapped and netted around stuffing (sausage meat stuffing in my local butchers). All the butchers near me sell them (there are 5 that I can think of within a 2 mile radius of my house) is it a Northern Ireland thing or do butchers elsewhere sell chicken olives?

Get chicken olives here in east Scotland, but beef olives are more popular. I love them both.

TheGlaikitRambler · 10/07/2018 16:27

Neither the chicken nor the beef olives I've had were olive shaped Grin, the beef ones tend to be like very fat sausages and the chicken ones sort of flower shaped (minus the bacon that is in the picture).

I absolutely knew what a chicken olive was before I clicked on this thread. I'm in NI though.
How about a wee slice of veda and a cuppa tea for afters? :)

DwangelaForever · 10/07/2018 16:57

@goingatlast I had two slices of Veda for my lunch, I genuinely don't know how people live without it, absolutely beaut!

@TheGlaikitRambler I've never seen a chicken olive in that floral shape! My chicken ones were quite like massive sausages.

Ps square sausage is my favourite thing about Scotland 😍😂 my butchers sell it, I must get some next time I'm in!

Chicken olives are usually filled with oatmeal stuffing where I live, similar to white pudding, beef ones are sausage meat

YesIt · 10/07/2018 17:22

I had no idea what a chicken olive was but it sounds amazing and I now want it with mash and gravy!

TheGlaikitRambler · 10/07/2018 17:36

tccat, our local butcher does both versions of chicken & beef olives, you can get oatmeal or sausage stuffing. I prefer oatmeal! Think I've also seen haggis & black pudding stuffed ones as well.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/07/2018 18:27

Omg, chicken olives with oatmeal stuffing.
Please send some here Grin

Are you Scottish too Glaiket? I'm assuming by your username you are
I tend to have the chicken ones like a roast dinner and the beef ones with mash and gravy made with a dolllop of redcurrant jelly

TorviBrightspear · 12/07/2018 13:53

I've heard of beef olives before, but never chicken olives, it would just be stuffed chicken thigh. (East Midlands)

Sounds nice though, I think I'll do my own soon.

But I have heard of Veda, and would love to try some. Does anyone know if we can get it here? DBro lived for a while in NI and would forget to bring me some when he came home.
