WIBU to consider asking noisy neighbours to turn it down?

Every summer this family use their patio/ garden to sit out in the evening sometimes till midnight and later. They are very noisy. Just the usual stuff- bit of music, loud chatter, worse with some drink, maybe some teenage kids involved as well. We aren't immediately next door (it's not a street layout, but a village where a few houses are scattered around.) There are 3 other cottages closer to them who presumably don't complain, which makes it harder.

It's got the point when we (go to bed between 11 and 11.30 latest because DH has sporting fixtures and gets up early) can't sleep if we want to leave a window even slightly open, due to their noise. It's a really quiet village setting and I think these people have no idea how a) sound travels and b) disturbs other people.

AIBU to think about asking them to keep the noise level down after 11pm, and if so how would you do it? Anon note, pop round? Never spoken to them ever before.

Well, last night our neighbours three doors down had a huge party with dozens of people out in the garden and at 3am I went round there asking demanding that they turned the music down and shut the f*ck up, so I would always say complain!

That said, your issue is more of a dilemma, because to a lot of people 11pm isn't late. But I would definitely go round and complain the next time it happens, whilst they're in mid-flow. They clearly don't realise how much the noise travels. Perhaps you also ask the people who live nearer if they are disturbed too and raise the issue collectively?

Next door were trying to play the national anthem and Three Lions on a cheapo shit vuvuzela outside in their garden at 11.30 last night so I fully sympathise - it was definitely a night where you couldn't NOT have a window open - normally I just suffer their endless endless garden noise and shut the windows and then struggle to sleep all night with the heat but last night was so hot I couldn't.

I lay in bed and cried with frustration.

It's hard isn't it? I know 11 or even 11.30 isn't late at a weekend ( and sometimes it's weekdays too) but it's such a quiet village that I can't understand how they don't see that everyone else has their lights off and is clearly in bed! They are clearly drinking because the noise volume goes up and up as the night goes on, they have their doors and windows open and music playing...

Antisocial Noise Act says no unreasonable noise between 11pm and 7am so if they are still being loud after that I'd be inclined to say something if you feel able to? No one seems to be aware of the 11-7am law and it really grates on me. We have fireworks going off at 1am, people sitting in gardens playing music until the early hours and when you've also got an 8 month old who gets woken up by it all it is a bit of a nightmare!

Makemineboozefree · 08/07/2018 07:38

Damn, I didn't realise the rule was no noise between 11pm and 7am, otherwise I would've gone back round to the party house at 6am as there is a handful still in the garden talking at the top of their voices. It's such selfish, disrespectful behaviour, it drives me mad.

I'll think on it now! Thing is, I'm usually in my PJs at that time and trying to sleep so we;d need to stay up in order to go round to chat!
