I've just been watching some of his current series because someone told me the recipes are good.
But WHY does he just dump a pile of broad beans on his worktop? Who actually does that??? What's wrong with a dish?
And why does he cook in a denim jacket? Don't most people take off their coat before they cook?
And is gnarly a new fashionable word? He's just said it many times in one episode.

I wouldn't say he's ever been obese. He might have been a bit overweight which isn't the same as being obese. Lots of chefs struggle with weight as the job entails being around and having a love of food which means they eat too much.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 08/07/2018 09:32

The man has an unhealthy obsession with fennel. Practically every recipe calls for fennel and it’s not even that nice of a herb.

ItchyBitchFace · 08/07/2018 10:06

I like his food but not him. I'm just very relieved he's stopped "wazzing" everything up in the food processor. Very unhygienic.

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 10:09

He is only allowed one buzz word per programme I hark back to pucka were simpler times 😀

chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 10:10

I can't comment on J.O. without getting banned from mumsnet sorry.

Let's just say, I am not a fan. Hmm

Drummingisfun · 08/07/2018 10:22

Also intrigued by what the thing is that catches fire.

In answer to previous post I ended up seeing all episodes in current series, on the in the background while I was doing other things.
He did not "wazz" anything in a food processor.
He did not cook anything with Rosemary and garlic I don't think. He did use garlic in a few recipes.
He did claim that "umami paste" is really easy to get hold of. Not if (like me) your nearest two supermaek are Aldi and Lidl I suspect Hmm

I was very happy that he cooked with broad beans, I love a good broad bean. Just found it a bit ridiculous that he dumped them straight on the worktop.

Of course Jamie had little to do with the stealing as 30 people work on one of "his" books.

If you’ve ever been one of those 30 people, or been around them, you’d know he absolutely definitely does write the recipes - but as mentioned, he has dyslexia and ADHD so of course there’s a fair amount of work needs doing... some of those 30 people might say the job would be easier if he was less involved sometimes... Grin

He’s a nice bloke IRL. What you see is what you get. He gets annoying obsessions and repetitive ticks depending on his interests at the time - the book where all the veg had to stand on end in their dishes, the Flavour Shaker, saying ‘gnarly’ or ‘wazz’ etc. But they’re quite genuine obsessions, I think. And he is passionate about his job.

Raglansleeve · 08/07/2018 10:47

People complaining about JO being responsible for artificial sweeteners in drinks etc. are having a go at the wrong person - it was cynical big business which decided, rather than increase the price of a can of fizzy drink by 6p, they would stuff them full of artificial sweeteners.

The way we eat as a nation impacts our health so negatively - the NHS is already creaking at the knees, diabetes caused by the crap we eat and drink costs billions a year, not to mention all the other issues associated with obesity, increased risks of cancer/heart disease, bad joints and so on.

I see kids on their way to school scarfing family sized bottles of fizzy drinks, packets of sweets and crisps. Our eating habits are a time bomb. We're addicted to this crap.

I admire JO - he is at least trying to help people eat more healthily, even if his methods are sometimes a bit clumsy.

And his Italian sausage and lentils recipe is the bollocks.

bluebell34567 · 08/07/2018 10:48

i liked him, then didnt like him and now i like him.
i like his simple new recipes. he is doing his best to earn money for his family with what he enjoys doing.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 08/07/2018 10:51

Can't stand him, i have a theory he's accidently one of the most evil men on the planet, he has good intentions but they make things worse.

Like remember when he was solving all school issues by making classes interesting and he had Rolf Harris, in a school, teaching an art class.

SmileEachDay · 08/07/2018 10:56

Raglan I love that recipe.

WIBU to pretend it’s veggie so that DC will Eat it? Grin

Obviouspretzel · 08/07/2018 11:00

Came on to post almost the exact same thing. People love to lay the blame for anything on an individual they don't like, rather than blame the corporations who are the real culprits.

bilbodog · 08/07/2018 11:08

Well i think he is brilliant - stop slagging him off. On TV he has to be upbeat and lively to present a good show - its called show business!! I think he has got a lot of younger people interested in cooking and that is good. Its the only way to get people away from pre packaged and crap food which full of additives. As parents we need to cook at home and include our children in this so we stop sending kids out into the world that cant cook.

itchyknees · 08/07/2018 11:10

Bloody hell, so running a pub is middle class now???

Bet Lynch and Dirty Den? Al Murray anyone? All buying into that middle class stereotype eh? Oh wait...

Yeah, bollocks. The Cricketers was a nice and very quiet rural pub in a quiet rural village. Now it’s a lot busier. Still just a village pub though, now with rooms in an extension near the car park.

Limpopobongo · 08/07/2018 11:15

I think hes a nice guy at heart and probably a decent cook. I think that his business empire is failing mostly because he has been badly advised by others who have been leeching off his success. He needs to dump them, get some decent business partners/advisors and get himself back in the public eye as he has been missing for a while. If he doesnt, the next headlines we will read about Jamie may not be very good.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 08/07/2018 11:23

I tried a Robinson’s cordial drink yesterday, they used to sell the best cordials but it was like drinking paint stripper thanks to the artificial sweeteners.

The country struggles with portion control and lack of exercise, putting sweeteners in everything won’t make a difference.

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 11:45

Tbf he can be a total ego driven twat at and blamed Brexit for his reasturants closing Hmm

JeezYouLoon · 08/07/2018 15:01

Haha, I served my DS his lunch on a breadboard today as I couldn't be arsed to get a plate out. He said he felt like he was in a posh restaurant - I blame Jamie Oliver Wink

Sunnymeg · 08/07/2018 15:07

I've just seen his 'new' advert for a fridge that will keep your food fresher for longer, so you throw less away. Dollops of fruit and vegetables on the shelves of the fridge, not on a plate. How much food would people have to throw away for it to be economical to buy a new fridge? If he is that concerned about wasted food he should either make a public information film about how to store food so it lasts for the optimum time or take out an advert in newspapers and magazines to advise people what to do!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/07/2018 15:10

I haven't forgiven him for School Dinners.

BasicUsername · 08/07/2018 15:32

He is such a hypocrite.

His latest crusades are the sugar tax and banning 2 for 1 pizza offers... and yet his restaurants offer very high sugar milkshakes and puddings, and 2 for 1 offers on pizza and pasta dishes.

It's like it's ok for him to do it, because the food that he is selling isn't cheap. God forbid poor people should be able to afford an occasional food treat.

SuburbanRhonda · 08/07/2018 15:40

Practically every recipe calls for fennel and it’s not even that nice of a herb.

Fennel is a vegetable, not a herb.

SuburbanRhonda · 08/07/2018 15:41

Why is it important to like someone? I’ve not got strong feelings either way but I cook several of his recipes regularly because they are simple and delicious. That’s all you need from a tv chef surely?

StillSmallVoice · 08/07/2018 16:05

I've never been a huge fan of Jamie Oliver, but I've cooked several things from the latest series and they've been great. The one involving pork fillet and chickpeas is going to end up a regular in our house, I suspect.

Gnarly is irritating, though.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 08/07/2018 19:02

I’m really not a fan but pretty much all of his recipes are available if you search online...you don’t have to like him to follow one of his recipes )for free).
