I've just been watching some of his current series because someone told me the recipes are good.
But WHY does he just dump a pile of broad beans on his worktop? Who actually does that??? What's wrong with a dish?
And why does he cook in a denim jacket? Don't most people take off their coat before they cook?
And is gnarly a new fashionable word? He's just said it many times in one episode.

Woah man, extreme chicken!

Drummingisfun · 07/07/2018 21:31

Oh wait, rice is now also gnarly.

I don’t mind the man himself so much but dear god, he is obsessed with wooden boards!

Igorina · 07/07/2018 21:35

There is nothing authentic about a 43-year-old man raised in Essex using the word gnarly.

Ergh.

Try hard words aside he's a condescending prat.

Oh, and his food is crap.

pinkgirl1234 · 07/07/2018 21:41

😂 😂

Who would have thought? Grin

Why has Jamie suddenly started using "gnarly"? It's been around for ages.

This is an Urban Dictionary meaning for it from 2003:

These kooks have no idea what GNARLY is. Gnarly is when you've gone beyond radical, beyond extreme, it's balls out danger, & or perfection, & or skill or all of that combined.

If we have to declare which side we're on, I like Jamie. Grin

Rednaxela · 07/07/2018 21:41

I love the wooden board/platter idea... until DH starts getting territorial over who took the biggest portion..

sleep5 · 07/07/2018 21:41

His new advert only shows his face a few times for fractions of a second. I thought it must be because he's self conscious about piling on the weight.

thegreatbeyond · 07/07/2018 21:42

I like his wife's Mothercare stuff, does that count?

Drummingisfun · 07/07/2018 21:46

Ooh, a plum tarte tatin is also gnarly.

I am starting to think that when he says gnarly what he really means is crunchy or crispy.

ShatnersBassoon · 07/07/2018 21:56

I think he means lumpen. Lumpen Food would be a good title for his next book.

Repect to Jamie - dyslexia & ADHD!

Jools is gorgeous - kids seem lovely (but what do I know?)

I like him, but he's annoying though, there's no denying that!

NapQueen · 08/07/2018 07:53

I know we only see what they want us to see but their home is stunning. And their kids wear lovely classic traditional clothing even if they do have bonkers names

They dont seem at all flashy. No jet set holidays papped, no monogrammed mountains of luggage. No troop of nannies. Yy they have bajillions, but they dont really show off about it.

Bellalunagirl · 08/07/2018 07:56

I actually like J.O

His chicken tikka masala recipe is really good and very easy to make.

I do agree on the plate front though, nobody tucks into a platter of food after a long day of work. Just sling it on a plate and get it out. That's tv land though I guess.

PiggeryPorcombe · 08/07/2018 08:06

He’s annoying in his manner of delivery but I still like and admire him. Dd had to do some homework about him re healthy eating and I’d forgotten all that he’d done for school dinners and what a success it was. Yes I’m sure there was a huge element of self promotion involved but he didn’t have to take up the cause.

Not sure how I feel about sugar tax though tbh.

And commenting on his paunch isn’t cool imo.

bigkidsdidit · 08/07/2018 08:06

I really like JO, and his recipes always work for me / my oven (alongside Nigella and Mary Berry's). I'm going to say gnarly today. I'm in a campsite in Scotland so I think everyone will understand Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 08/07/2018 08:10

And commenting on his paunch isn’t cool imo.

I don't know if he has a paunch and I wasn't intending to be cool. Just guessing why he might be cooking with his coat on.

HoneyDragon · 08/07/2018 08:11

He’s just in it for the cash. If he really cared about people’s wellbeing he wouldn’t be endorsing a company that sells a product that catches fire 😡

PrettyWisdomous · 08/07/2018 08:12

the only dangerous and challenging food I can think of is rhubarb

Grin

I like Jamie Oliver! I think by gnarly he means like the top of a crumble... Crunchy and delicous with slightly burnt more cooked bits that add extra yum. But I agree his 30 minute meals take much longer!

YouCantBeSirius · 08/07/2018 08:18

Does he still "wazz" things up in a food processor?

BlueLegume · 08/07/2018 08:20

5 ingredients book is one of my books of the year and I’m normally a massive Nigella fan - her recent book I’ve enjoyed reading but not cooking from. Glad to see a JO thread that hasn’t descended into horrible nastiness - still do not understand the need to comment opif you don’t like him. Just avoid the thread - personal comments about a guy who seems to care about what he does, clearly loves his country and is also bothered enough to make us all think about what we consume really irritate me.

madmomma · 08/07/2018 08:23

The guy is trying to help all kinds of people, particularly kids. He's a family man and has got people cooking and discussing important food-related issues. I don't get what there is to hate.

noeffingidea · 08/07/2018 08:25

It's just his gimmick. All TV chefs have to have a gimmick, it would seem. They can't just cook food and serve it on a plate in a normal manner. Of course when they run the risk of annoying and putting people with their gimmick and presentation.
eggsandspoonrace I think you'll find it's not just on mumsnet. People dislike Jamie Oliver all over the place.

hswarbrick · 08/07/2018 08:27

He's been fat bordering on obese for a decade. Yet spends his time making drinks companies put artifical sweetneners in drinks rather than minding his own business. I used to enjoy a ribena once a month, it's been ruined thanks to his fat ego wanting more attention.

He's books just jump on current trends and re package work that others have spend a lifetime doing. He pissed off alot with the superfood book and had to make some payments to settle with other people that felt he stole the recipes. Of course Jamie had little to do with the stealing as 30 people work on one of "his" books.

I signed the thing when joining up here

FiestaThenSiesta · 08/07/2018 08:27

Gnarly has been around since Bill and Ted went on their most excellent adventure. Let’s see how long it takes him to make a most excellent bodacious meal with a resplendent pud.
