I've just been watching some of his current series because someone told me the recipes are good.
But WHY does he just dump a pile of broad beans on his worktop? Who actually does that??? What's wrong with a dish?
And why does he cook in a denim jacket? Don't most people take off their coat before they cook?
And is gnarly a new fashionable word? He's just said it many times in one episode.

We always serve from a central plate. Midweek and everything! That way you only take what you need....

hswarbrick · 08/07/2018 08:29

He’s just in it for the cash. If he really cared about people’s wellbeing he wouldn’t be endorsing a company that sells a product that catches fire 😡

Not quite true! He's in it for the cash and the attention.

Spent years pushing high fat, sugar and salt food for both supermarket and his own ventures. Hmm

lidoshuffle · 08/07/2018 08:30

I've now got Gnarls Barkley "Crazy' as an ear worm...

Rememory · 08/07/2018 08:31

I made gnarly chicken last week it was fab and easy to do.

The80sweregreat · 08/07/2018 08:31

itchy, well said, i know people may not like him much, but he is an inspiration to the children that may not be that academic but have other talents instead - he watched his mum and dad in their pub cooking and learnt his trade the hard way.
I agree that the cooking shows he does are a bit annoying. I preferred the Naked Chef myself , he was so young there on his little scooter and making meals for his girlfriend ( now his wife) and her friends in a trendy flat - an Essex hipster sort before it was fashionable.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 08/07/2018 08:31

I think his heart was in the right place wrt school dinners and even the sugar tax, but as a grown woman I want to eat sugar when I choose it and not have my favourite products replace it with artificial sweeteners that don't taste nice.

Also having his heart in the right place doesn't stop him from being a pretentious prat.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/07/2018 08:33

I’m waiting for a few years down the line once his children are older and one of them being papped eating a KFC family feast bucket. Oooh the uproar! Grin

Fatted · 08/07/2018 08:35

I can't stand him after all his snobby judgey war on school dinners and sugar. Now my children who are not overweight can't have their sweets or that they ate in moderation as part of a healthy diet because they're full of artificial sweeteners that give them the shits.

Apparently he was at our work the other week on a day I wasn't working, making a show about making good/healthy food for shift workers. Apparently the food he made to give people to try was disgusting. Grin

The80sweregreat · 08/07/2018 08:35

Most chefs are pretentious though! seems to go with the nature of the work they do.
I believe too that his heart was in the right place with the school dinners - at least it was about doing something for other people / kids and not just for himself.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/07/2018 08:38

Jamie fan reporting for duty!

I think he’s great. Self made cook with social responsibility. Nice.

Lethaldrizzle · 08/07/2018 08:40

I had no idea sugar was so popular until I joined mumsnet! Adults complaining about not being able to get their sugar fixes or their kids not being able to eat sweets with their pack lunches. Wtaf. Just eat a mars bar and stop complaining

Lethaldrizzle · 08/07/2018 08:41

Yes helmet I'm with you!

hswarbrick · 08/07/2018 08:41

He is self made, but it's more due to luck than anything else though? Got a job in a kitchen and got noticed when a TV show was filmed there and the rest is history along with lots of help. It's not like he single handedly got over dyslexia - a whole team of people are responsible for each book.

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 08:44

I thought Gnarly meant yuck ? I think jamie just needs to calm down and use a bloody plate

madcatladyforever · 08/07/2018 08:44

I can't watch it the whole flinging food aroundsets my teeth on edge.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/07/2018 08:45

How can food be gnarly? Is he eating chunks of old trees?

DownstairsMixUp · 08/07/2018 08:50

He is a massive wanker.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/07/2018 08:51

When wc people do well, it’s all down to luck. When mc people do well it’s down to hard-work.

hswarbrick · 08/07/2018 08:54

Helmetbymidnight only if you are a wanker. Some people are just right place right time and then take the credit for a whole teams work.

Others grafted for a years, slept on sofas, took on multiple jobs while training. It's nothing to do with class.

charis · 08/07/2018 08:54

I loved it on Twitter recently when he was asking people about their favourite snacks and somebody commented "not telling you, you prick, you'll just get it banned" He has ruined Irn Bru. That is unforgivable.

NetofLemons · 08/07/2018 08:54

I think he’s great. Jamie’s directly made a change for the better in life through his charity foundation which is giving skills and work young people, he’s made a national change for the better in terms of aspirations for kid’s food which has contributed to public health (against some powerful corporate interests in the food and drinks industry). Etc. These are all fantastic achievements.

If you don’t like his adjectives, books, tv shows or restaurants that’s fine but JO is a good egg and that’s that.

hswarbrick · 08/07/2018 08:56

Anyway JO isn't working class, that's another part of the smart marketing team behind him.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/07/2018 08:56

Yeah yeah he’s just a lucky boy, done fuck all for the last 20 years. He wouldn’t know hard work if it hit him in the face.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/07/2018 08:58

Yeah totally, he comes from a background of massive inherited wealth and high educational attainment. So posh.

itchyknees · 08/07/2018 08:58

Jamie Oliver isn’t working class??? Wtf? His dad runs the village pub, he went to the two nearest schools and flunked, what on Earth makes you think he isn’t?
