I cringe when I see someone wear one. Do you?

Totally with you OP. In particular, the ones that say "Mama", or "Mama Bear". You're not a fucking bear.

I lump those people in the same group as the ones who wear those ridiculous "Hello" tops. It's like a, "Hi, I really want you to know I'm middle class and can afford to spend £40 on a logo'd shirt that's the same quality as one for £3 in Primark but much tackier looking".

Shitonthebloodything · 06/07/2018 09:30

I do think yabu for using the word ghastly though. Grin Is that just a Mumsnet thing or do people really use that in real life?

Trills · 06/07/2018 09:34

Is that just a Mumsnet thing or do people really use that in real life?

If you spend some time here you'll find that people say and do and believe all kinds of things that you don't come across in your personal real life, because our real lives are generally quite limited circles.

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 09:36

I’ve got a few of the Selfish Mother sweatshirts, because I like them and I like the cause they support.

I only wear them in the house as I don’t particularly suit sweatshirts but like them for being cosy at home.

I don’t really care if people wear them or not.

Not liking halloumi??? Now THAT is weird Grin how can you not love squeaky cheese???

Trills · 06/07/2018 09:37

I personally don't like ANY writing on clothes. No matter how clever or witty or important the message.

I don't say this in real life to my friends who sometimes wear clothes with writing on though.

FallArmyWorm · 06/07/2018 09:45

@Shitonthebloodything I use the word in real life. I also use words like 'super' and 'pullover' and people at work take the micky out of my accent.... So I am probably not "normal"

Bananalanacake · 06/07/2018 09:46

I am in Germany and am amazed at the amount of clothes for sale with English writing on them.

FallArmyWorm · 06/07/2018 09:51

@Bananalanacake do you think after Brexit the Germans will outlaw the sale of such items? Grin

"What a smashing pullover you have there Carol, what does it say? Mutha? Why is is spelled like that, it is a joke? Oh how marvellous, do tell me the joke. :o"

AgentHannahWells · 06/07/2018 10:00

I like the selfish mother ones and I like halloumi. Now I wish I could buy a halloumi sweatshirt.

HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 10:01

I can't see why anyone would care to be honest. I might get myself one, it sounds funny, depending on which context you are wearing it.

I have never felt like I lost my identity when becoming a mother. I have never felt like my identity was defined by my current job either.

I am ridiculously childish, so I do like the idea of wearing something that will make people cringe Grin within reasons.

Trills · 06/07/2018 10:01

I do like words on a canvas bag.
Bags are not clothes.
Totally different vibe.

EdithWeston · 06/07/2018 10:03

"Oh ok, didn’t know there was a category of clothes just for the school run"

That's because there isn't!!

The MN school run concept is sod all to do with actual school runs.

It's simply long-standing jargon for having the right summer dresses in your wardrobe, so when you need to dress in a hurry after titting about with toddlers, you have the right things in your wardrobe to just grab and wear. Being late for the school run was just the example that caught on formwhy you might need to dress rapidly.

There hasn't been a good school run dress thread (in the MN sense) for a while. I think the concept diluted and died as the site expanded, and these days the threads just have anodyne titles about nice dresses.

lolaflores · 06/07/2018 10:07

If my mum and hers and before could get by without a t shirt denoting their role, then I think I won't need one. We didn't invent motherhood but someone has decided to market it to us.
Up to us if we spend our mo ey on telling ourselves what we already k i.e and about which, no one else gives a shite.

AuntieStella · 06/07/2018 10:08

Why does the Selfish Mother spell 'Mamma' incorrectly?

I'm not much of a fan if slogans on T-shirts at all, but ones with poor spelling and other idiosyncratic choice of language are eye-catching in al, the wrong sorts of ways.

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 10:12

They don’t, mama is spelled mama.

ProfessorMoody · 06/07/2018 10:17

I just don't understand why anyone would want to look the same as anyone else either. So you're a "Mama"? So what?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 06/07/2018 10:23

Oh I’ve found my people @fallarmyworm for a funny and not funny reason:

  1. My friend got me a Selfish Mother tshirt. Living in yummy mummy SW London thought I’d fit right in. Came down with terrible depression a few weeks after DD was born, huge and terrible loss of identity crisis etc. Remember putting that tshirt on for the day then taking it off and putting it in the bin. Ridiculous but that was the start of my mental recovery (not just a mum and not just who I was before but now a combination of the two). Your “own goal” analogy is spot on. Love it.
  1. Just as I would judge anyone with a Burberry baseball cap, my judging light flicks to “you’re smug” when I see one on anyone. Bah.

Finally - and IABU - but I think there’s almost a crowing aspect to them... “I’m a mother, look at what I did”.
Whether that’s through 80 rounds of IVF or what it’s irrelevant, I just think I’d want to punch someone wearing one if I was on month 24 of TTC IYSWIM

BrutusMcDogface · 06/07/2018 10:28

I quite like the one that says "outnumbered", but wouldn't actually buy it and wear it!

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 06/07/2018 10:30

High 5 @lolaflores

timeisnotaline · 06/07/2018 10:34

I quite like the selfish mother ones. I wouldn’t wear anything that said mama. I couldn’t care less what you or anyone else think of my clothes sorry! I am also unconcerned about my identity, it’s not in crisis.

FallArmyWorm · 06/07/2018 10:43

To all those of you who have not suffered an identity crisis upon becoming mothers - bully for you!

Or maybe you had a lot of time on your hands before you became mothers? (Tongue in cheek btw!)

OP posts:
HairDyedPink · 06/07/2018 10:45

thanks for the thread, just ordered a couple of selfish mother's tops in the sales.

I do like their "girl" and "boy" top too for my kids

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 10:53

Why, when someone disagrees with another, does it inevitably descend into criticism?

Identity crisis my arse.

RoboticSealpup · 06/07/2018 10:57

I really like the Selfish Mother ones. Nice colours and patterns. Why is it lame to wear one of those, but fine to wear a top that says "Sneaky Pete's Surf Shack" or some random bullshit?
