To have only just noticed (thanks to MN) that there's a football thing going on?

That's it, really. I don't have a television. Radio 3 doesn't mention football. No adult male in the house. University DS is a classical musician who wouldn't know a football if he fell over it. Teen DD is only interested in the slugs above her eyes her eyebrows. But according to MN, there's a football competition going on. AIBU not to have noticed?

Radio 3 doesn’t have a news bulletin Hmm

ThinkingCat · 04/07/2018 20:35

Don't you read news websites at all?

SuperSuperSuper · 04/07/2018 20:37

Has it not been mentioned at your workplace?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 04/07/2018 20:38

You don’t listen to the news at all? Or see all the promotional items that have been all over the high street?

AntoinetteOuradi · 04/07/2018 20:51

Fifthkey, R3 does indeed have news bulletin. But it is always something to do with Teresa May Hmm.

Thinking, no I don't. I rely on R3 and also subscribe to the Times Online (which doesn't seem to involve people kicking balls around).

Super, I am self-employed.

Crisp, I do listen to the news, but R3 doesn't seem that bothered about football. I am self-employed (at home), so the high street doesn't impinge on me (fortunately, as it would tempt me to spend money, never mind watch crappy sport).

Thinking... The Times Online is obviously a news site. Duh. Sorry.

No of course not. You’re exposed only to what you’re exposed to. I’m following the impending Cambodian General Election, most probably aren’t. I’m also following the World Cup.

GlacindaTheTroll · 04/07/2018 21:05

Yes, I think YABU. Because it also means that you have not watched, listened to or read the news for several weeks, nor have you noticed any of the many displays and promotions.

You are also failing to take advantage of the quiet times on the roads and in shops!

No, I don't know why it's such a big deal and I'm in the 'couldn't care less' camp. But it is. And to be so cut off from current events that you fail to notice it at all is not a good thing.

(I'm hoping this is a wind up thread. Because it would be worrying for someone to really be that cut off)

Firenight · 04/07/2018 21:07

I’m fairly oblivious too. Only aware because it’s on social media and it gets mentioned at work. But I’m only in the office a few days a week so easy to forget it’s still happening.

No big deal.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 04/07/2018 21:08

OP may subscribe to The Times, but clearly doesnMt actually read it. Given that it's been a front page story with pictures On and off for a few weeks now.

MiddlingMum · 04/07/2018 21:26

I don't care about the football, but other people I know do care and so I'm aware that it's happening and have a rough idea of what's going on. England won a match on penalty thingys last night, right?

I saw a meme today which said something like "Disliking popular events does not make you a more interesting person."

OP, I'd be concerned about other world events which you might not have noticed.

ThinkingCat · 04/07/2018 21:27

I think it's a good idea to read several news sources regularly to get a good spread of angles on the news and see what different media think is important.

Follyfoot · 04/07/2018 21:29

Oh good, yet another thread about this Hmm

AntoinetteOuradi · 04/07/2018 21:40

@MiddlingMum " "Disliking popular events does not make you a more interesting person".

Oh fuck. I thought it might convey Immediate Interest on me, but I am evidently out of luck. Grin

Anyway. I suppose I just bypass the football stuff on Times Online (I am sort of aware of the football stuff, I admit, as I cancelled my Daily Telegraph subscription because the football supplements made me feel that I was paying for a crock of shit).

Follyfoot, are there others? I'm too busy pissing myself at the 'snapped and farted' thread yet again to read them. Sorry. I might cause a car accident, though, as there's something about 'snapped and farted' which even over-rides my DP dumping me.

Yes. You need to wake up and get yourself living in the real world. Ignorance.

AntoinetteOuradi · 04/07/2018 21:44

Thanks, Chocolate. But how is people kicking balls around the same as living in the real world?

OP posts:
livingthegoodlife · 04/07/2018 21:46

I only found out this morning when someone at work mentioned the game last night. Honestly it's just passed me by. No-one in my house is interested. I don't watch TV. I tend to listen to CDs in the car. Somehow it's not come to my attention either? I don't think it's that unusual OP.

MargaretCavendish · 04/07/2018 21:48

Jesus. I don't like football either, but why be a snobby twat about it?

cadburyegg · 04/07/2018 21:51

YANBU.

I’m busy from 6am-8pm looking after a 4 month old and a 3 year old. We go out almost daily, but not to the centre of town as we live in a small village. We see friends (most of whom aren’t interested in football) and go to play groups but as I am on maternity leave I don’t see work colleagues. When both kids are asleep I might read for a bit or watch tv before collapsing into bed. I do watch some news and look at news websites so I’m aware of the world cup’s existence but have no interest in following it, and can totally understand if others don’t do so that often depending on how busy they are.

Hahahaha at some of these replies. Hilarious.

CaliforniaLoove · 04/07/2018 22:05

I would looooove to be disciplined enough to not read online news.

CaliforniaLoove · 04/07/2018 22:06

Also, people who don't have a TV, what do you do in evenings your at home?

Not goady, genuine question, looking to reduce TV...

MoggyP · 04/07/2018 22:06

Genuine question: do you catch up on the news before voting?

Ignorance of current events isn't a good thing

(But no, it's not hilarious to show silly affectations)

CaliforniaLoove · 04/07/2018 22:06

*YOU'RE.

Damnit.

VladmirsPoutine · 04/07/2018 22:10

You're just so cool! How can I be more like you? I bet you even shower with your clothes on!

JennyBlueWren · 04/07/2018 22:35

For weeks every time we went into co-op DS (3) has seen their decorations and announced that "it's the FIfa world cup!" Even MIL included it in her phone call yesterday and she's Scottish and we live in Scotland. I probably wouldn't be watching if it wasn't for the epic heatwave breastfeeds DD is wanting at the moment.
