To have only just noticed (thanks to MN) that there's a football thing going on?

That's it, really. I don't have a television. Radio 3 doesn't mention football. No adult male in the house. University DS is a classical musician who wouldn't know a football if he fell over it. Teen DD is only interested in the slugs above her eyes her eyebrows. But according to MN, there's a football competition going on. AIBU not to have noticed?

I don't really watch it - utterly uninterested in football as a game. But still interested in who's beating whom. But it's hard to avoid some highlights as they're on every news channel.

It's the sporting parallel of being unable to bear to listen to the actual Eurovision songs, but quite enjoying seeing how the voting goes.

pigeondujour · 04/07/2018 23:10

Oh fuck. I thought it might convey Immediate Interest on me, but I am evidently out of luck.

Clearly, and yeah looks like it Confused 'football thing'? Extremely not cute.

Sparklesocks · 05/07/2018 00:00

It’s a bit odd you’re not aware of popular events OP - doesn’t bode well if there was a zombie apocalypse tomorrow!

Mississippilessly · 05/07/2018 00:01

Oh OP you are SO off the wall and unusual and different. And your use of the phrase 'football thing' is hilarious and so endearing. How different and better your family sounds to the rest of the plebs in society.

Alternatively - ODFOD.

California, I play the piano and read and faff around on the internet and talk to whichever DC can drag him or herself away from their telephones.

To those who say I'm cut off from current events and have no idea of what's going on in the news,I did say I subscribe to the Times Online. This is an online newspaper, in case that wasn't clear Confused. I suppose I just scan it looking for politics and just don't see the bits that don't interest me. If there were a zombie invasion, though, that might catch my eye.

I know the sodding football thing is on but it leaves me stone cold. So does the tennis thing.
People who watch sports on tv, sitting on the sofa and stuffing themselves...a bit ironic, no?

midnightmisssuki · 05/07/2018 09:58

You mean to say the times hasn't written once about the football? Not even once? I find that hard to believe OP.

Unfinishedkitchen · 05/07/2018 10:01

Being completely cut off from current events doesn’t make you superior or cool it makes you look silly.

There’s an admin at DHs work who UK until recently didn’t know that Theresa May was our PM because she doesn’t watch the news/read papers. Would you think she was superior/cool or stupid/ignorant?

Justanotherlurker · 05/07/2018 10:11

also subscribe to the Times Online (which doesn't seem to involve people kicking balls around).

You may wish to unsubscribe, The Times Online obviously covers people kicking balls around, they have excellent coveredge, and shock horror even have reporters over in Russia at the minute.

Unfinishedkitchen · 05/07/2018 10:18

Plus it’s very important to know the biggest news in popular culture even if you’re not personally into it. For example in my line of work I tend to network and sometimes if there’s no adverse weather to break the ice, someone will say so ‘did you see the match’ (only if it’s a really big one) etc etc.

Politicians are often briefed on the latest goings on in popular culture to make them seem relatable. That’s why David Cameron would pretend to love Girls Aloud of whatever. You know he didn’t really but a lot of people would then think ‘great he’s just like us’ etc etc.

I’m aware of stuff even if it’s not my cup of tea. I don’t watch Love Island but I know what it is as it’s a big thing for many people. If people were to talk to me about it I would never be a wanker and claim to have never heard of it and exclaim that I only watch documentaries as Love Island is beneath me.

ProfessorMoody · 05/07/2018 10:19

I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for my DH. DS hates sport, as do I.

I don't watch the news or read papers because I have anxiety /PTSD and my therapist advised me not to. I listen to playlists on Spotify so no radio.

I only turn the TV on if there's something I specifically want to watch like Come Dine With Me Attenborough or the Bake Off.

I don't think it's that unusual. If you don't like something, why would you spend time reading about it, or noticing it?

FootballsComingHome · 05/07/2018 10:31

I think it’s quite sad and to some extent ignorant that you don’t know what’s happening in the world around you. For reference though, the front page of the times online has at least 4 football related stories so I’m not sure how you could miss it (not including today’s cartoon which combines football and politics😃)

No adult male in the house

I presume there are adult females?

University DS is a classical musician who wouldn't know a football if he fell over it

Congratulations on your child with superior hobbies Wink

AntoinetteOuradi · 05/07/2018 18:09

Thanks, Jacques. The others are keen on Love Island (so I have heard of that).

No adult females here apart from me, but I would assume an adult female wouldn't be interested in football unless forced to watch by a son/husband/dad.

Unfinished, your networking point is a good one, though.

God, would you? What a fucking idiot you are then.

FootballsComingHome · 05/07/2018 18:44

Wtf why would you assuming me the, just because it’s something that you have no interest in doesn’t mean that the entire female pop don’t either Confused

JacquesHammer · 05/07/2018 19:03

Oh dear. Everyday misogyny at its finest.

Thank you, Pigeon Grin.

Radio 3 mentioned football on the breakfast programme yesterday Smile. And people got in touch saying they liked football.

Train101 · 05/07/2018 19:19

You still haven't answered the thing on how often do you actually read the times?
Because it has had lots of coverage in there.

And you say faff about on the internet, so you missed all the threads on the world cup? Didn't read BBC or ITV news or any other news site? Didn't look at social media at all?

Train101 · 05/07/2018 19:20

Also extremely sexist and rude to say that you don't think women watch football unless forced Angry

AntoinetteOuradi · 05/07/2018 19:40

Train, sorry for not answering that one. I read the Times Online every day (though as I say, I think I just don't see the bits that don't interest me - I wouldn't notice anything to do with travel, either, as I don't go anywhere more exciting than Waitrose).

I don't look at the BBC news website because I prefer my news without a lefty spin (interesting how the spin on the R3 news changes throughout the day).

I do indeed faff on the internet but, again, I suppose I skim the MN Active Conversations for things that might be of interest. I don't have any social media accounts (don't even have a smartphone), so don't look at social media.

R3 does intermittently mention football, but not in a way that suggests there's anything of enormous significance happening. They also mention waders and such like.

I suppose there must be lots of women who are interested in football (or other dreary team sports). I just haven't met them.

OP posts:
AntoinetteOuradi · 05/07/2018 19:41

Also meant to say that much of my faffing on the internet involves John Lewis, RightMove, and eBay. So not much scope for footy-things there.

Train101 · 05/07/2018 19:47

Ah I will let you off not seeing it then Grin.
Just seemed wierd that you didn't even know it was really haplening

Friendlyoldwasp · 05/07/2018 19:49

God OP you sound a right barrel of laughs. I’m a female, I work in politics and guess what, I love the World Cup Grin
