World Cup- is it really all that?

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 04/07/2018 11:20

Just that really.

A group of lads dashing around after a ball, on a patch of grass.

Am I missing something? Why is it so exciting? Is it the actual game, or the fact that it only happens every 4 years? Also, these young men are paid more per week than most hard-working folk (with
proper jobs) earn in a year, so surely they should be winning the odd match anyway?

Why are people so delighted when they actually win? Have I just answered my own question??!

Gosh OP, YABVU, it's massive!

The biggest football tournament for possibly the most popular sport in the world!

WeirdScenesInsideTheGoldmine · 04/07/2018 11:22

I don’t understand why so
Many people are being so bloody miserable, it really annoys me

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 04/07/2018 11:23

Dunno OP, but apparently more people watch the World Cup than the Olympics.

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/07/2018 11:23

You don’t have to get it.

Also most footballers donate their fee when playing for the national side. Certainly England do. Just FYI.

You realise that you can boil just about anything down like this and make it sound daft, don't you?

PinkHeart5914 · 04/07/2018 11:28

Well it’s not my thing but it’s a sport and I can see why people like it just as they do with tennis, golf and F1. Can you really not understand why someone might like something you don’t?

Why are people so delighted when they actually win? Umm becuase when you support a team you would naturally be delighted if they won Confused kind of the idea to win isn’t it?

Trinity66 · 04/07/2018 11:28

You don't have to watch it or get it

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 11:29

Oh for goodness sake.

YES it is all that if you like football, NO liking it isn't compulsory.

Threads where the OP professes not to understand something are utterly bonkers; how hard is it really to grasp people have different interests?

WaggyMama · 04/07/2018 11:29

Why not support your country in the most popular sport in the world?

group of lads dashing around after a ball, on a patch of grass. You try running up and down a football pitch for 2 hours

runningkeenster · 04/07/2018 11:30

I'm not into football but I think this year's tournament has been quite interesting because a lot of the usual stars have left the competition and there is a real chance that a country who hasn't won it before could win it, eg Croatia or Belgium.

However, Brazil are still in it so it will probably go to form in the end and they'll win. Or Russia because people will be scared that Putin's mafia will get them if they don't let them win.

arethereanyleftatall · 04/07/2018 11:31

What I like about football is, if you're top on football, you really are a top athlete. It is played by so so many people, rich or poor, in countries all over the world.
So many other sports that people are 'the best in the world at' are only there because these sports aren't accessible to everyone.

I hate watching football in general but I love the World Cup! This one has been full of surprises.

Storm4star · 04/07/2018 11:40

What I don't really get is why people who hate football on any other day, get excited about the World Cup. Whats the difference? It's still the same game. England will never win. I don't understand the excitement if you are not normally a footie fan.

Morningdash · 04/07/2018 11:40

Actually I don't really get the hype and have zero interest in it myself, not just world cup but all football. Unfortunately DH loves football. Massive fan of one team but pretty much watches all - last night I wasn't sure if it was going to be tears so I was so pleased for him that England won - he was literally bouncing with excitement.

I might hate football and can not get excited or even really give any game any attention for long enough but I have enough respect and love for those that are loving it that I just patiently wait for the season to finish and keep my fingers crossed that its a happy outcome on their behalf.

Spose bit like DH feels about some of the stuff I love that he has zero interest in.

PavlovianLunge · 04/07/2018 11:45

I was in St Petersburg (not for the football) along with people from Mexico, Colombia and particularly Argentina. They all, to a person, looked to be having a great time in a beautiful city.

I’m not fussed about the World Cup one way or the other, but it’s a huge event, it’s only every four years and it means a lot to probably millions of people, for whom, it really is all that.

But I think you know that already.

NothingButBored · 04/07/2018 11:45

I’m not a big football person but even I watched it and enjoyed it last night and was very happy when England won!

Kezebel · 04/07/2018 11:48

YABVU.

It's coming home! Grin

Justanotherlurker · 04/07/2018 11:48

England will never win.

Do you only support teams/things that are going to win?

The billions of supporters around the world of teams that will never win their respective leagues should just pack up because they aren't going to win.

You obviously don't "get" football, although it really isn't hard to see why, but I think @ThursdayLastWeek has basically summed up the thread

LucilleBluth · 04/07/2018 11:49

Do you feel the same about tennis and rugby op....or is becamost footballers are, gosh, working class Shock. Is that why they are paid TOO MUCH!

ElMarineroBaila · 04/07/2018 11:53

Yes their pay is ridiculous but that's how corporations work. People talk about it like the government pay their wages. Yes it's unfair that nurses, for example, get shit pay but fifa doesn't pay their wages!

I don't follow football, but I do watch England in the world Cup. We're not patriotic about much in this country, and it's nice to feel a sense of national pride when the team do well. It's a tiny part of the year every 4 years and if you don't like it then either ignore it, or learn to like it.

MrsPreston11 · 04/07/2018 11:54

Just let people enjoy things.....

user1471596238 · 04/07/2018 12:03

I'm enjoying the feelgood factor. With all the negative issues going on in other areas of life, it's nice to have something positive to enjoy. I do understand that football isn't for everyone and I know that it disrupts TV scheduling etc. but let others enjoy it.

HappyLollipop · 04/07/2018 12:03

You don't have to get it, it obviously doesn't interest you as I'm sure you've got interests that others don't 'get'.

It's not just kicking a balls there's actually a lot of skill and practice involved just like in any other sport also it's apart of a lot of people's childhood and is played in practically every country so it brings people together from all cultures and backgrounds which the World Cup shows us. Ultimately though football is a form of sports entertainment and the most popular type so that's why they get paid ridiculous sums of money just like famous actors and music artists do.
