His scattergun affect, inability to concentrate and follow through a rational argument, will only get worse as he ages, and does explain how he was unable to benefit from the educational opportunities his pa bought for him. It certainly also explains some of how he approached his business; no daily plan, constant freewheeling phone calls, opportunistic.
I think, somewhere at the depths of that black hole, where his soul should be, he knows he is neither clever nor capable, (and that is why he is addicted to the feedback he gets from rallies with his cult) but superficially he does think he is a genius high achiever.
He is an effective con artist and showman to the willing and frightening how his following became cultish so quickly and easily. I loathe what a compelling psychological study he is. But it is horribly fascinating, also because it is so perilous. He has not one iota of any quality required to be a decent leader and president. And I thought Brexit was going to be the only nightmare haunting my later years.
