The above is a quote from The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, said by Lord Elrond. At this stage, with POTUS practically pissing off every ally the US has while cosying up with several dictators, it seems quite apt.

It's interesting how many vets, in particular female vets, and non politicos, are coming forward as Dem. candidates.

'weakness'. In their deluded little minds Boudica-like strong and stable PM meets Herculean very stable genius POTUS, cozie. Smile

That was a very interesting interview with Madeleine Albright, ohmymimi, on her book about facism.

She says she is not calling Trump a facist. But IMHO she's spot on when she says facism is not an ideology but a method.

“Defining fascism is difficult,” she responds. “First of all, I don’t think fascism is an ideology. I think it is a method, it’s a system.”

It is in his methods that Trump can be compared with, if not precisely likened to, the dictators of the 1930s. Fascists are typically masters of political theatre. They feed on and inflame grievances by setting “the people” against their “enemies”. Fascists tell their supporters that there are simple fixes for complex problems. They present as national saviours and conflate themselves with the state. They seek to subvert, discredit and eliminate liberal institutions. She reminds us that they have often ascended to power through the ballot box and then undermined democracy from within. She is especially fond of a Mussolini quote about “plucking a chicken feather by feather” so that people will not notice the loss of their freedoms until it is too late.

Is anyone watching The Fourth Estate now which is looking at SCROTUS's first year.

It's started with Charlottesville and it is brutal Sad

So the Wiltshire woman exposed to Novichok has died. This is awful.

That NYT piece is frightening, Roussette.

This refers to Senator Johnson, who is just back from visiting Russia. I’m sure this is just a coincidence. Hmm

@ GovInslee
My office recently learned the shocking revelation from @HHSGov that reunification could mean placing a separated child with ANY long-term sponsor — regardless of whether it’s their parents, other family in the US, family back in their home country or in long-term foster care.
12:35 pm - 6 Jul 2018

@ GovInslee
If true, this interpretation blatantly ignores the terms of the court order. The federal government has also recently admitted that reunification is being used as a bargaining chip to induce parents to agree to voluntary deportation.

@ GovInslee
We cannot trust that these families will actually be reunified. Today I led a group of six governors in demanding @HHSGov & @DHSgov take responsibility for the dire effects of the "zero-tolerance policy" and trauma inflicted on nearly 3,000 children. www.governor.wa.gov/sites/default/files/documents/letters/DemGovLetteronFamilyReunification.pdf

SanFranBear, I'm watching The Fourth Estate on catch-up, so haven't got to that bit yet.

So far I'm finding it superb. Like All the President's Men, but filmed in real time.

I'm also finding it's helping me focus on the bigger issues, and not have my attention continually hijacked by the relentless dead-cat-throwing of this White House.

(The problem being, this White House's dead cats are often important issues in themselves. Nonetheless, the almost daily production of major scandals and crises means each distracts from the other.)

ohmymimi · 09/07/2018 09:00

Yes, Perking, re Albright method/ideology, I hadn't thought of it quite like that before. I reviewed the signs of fascism list and I think she is right.
And El Presidente uses that methodology:
(My bolding)

'President Trump’s racially charged words dovetail with harsh policies'
( nb: I think fascist could replace 'harsh' here )

Experts who have examined mass persecutions say the “tough” talk, as Trump likes to call it, is used by leaders across the planet to get a population more comfortable with discriminatory policies — even if they don’t like the initiatives.

“You need that mushy middle to not hate it,” said Andrea Pitzer, the author of “One Long Night,” a history of concentration camps. “You have to get the general population not to fight it and be complicit in some parts of it. But they don’t have to be doing it.”
