Teacher attitude

Have name changed for this as potentially a bit goady.

Read a few comments today about teachers wanting an 'easy' ride at work so looking at supply, for example. Also saw a comment about going back to teaching a couple of days for 'pin money' basically.

AIBU to think that this isn't the attitude you'd want in a teacher either as a colleague or as a parent?

I get that it's a hard and demanding job but is it one you could or should do half heartedly? Does hoping to go on supply imply a half hearted effort or is it just a defence mechanism.

Should note btw that I'm in Scotland and we don't appear jut now to have the same level of bullshit that our English colleagues have at the moment.

It's totally up to the individual whether they work full or part time, permanently or supply.

I'm astounded by the level of moaning from some teachers on this thread though. Having to work hard and feeling stressed is not only a teacher's lot...

It is a very long time since I taught supply (and it was in a different country), but I remember it as being quite demanding in its own way because classes had this thing about testing the supply teacher. You needed nerves like a lion tamer in the schools I went to.

Having said that, does it matter if it's a soft or an easy job? The world needs supply teachers, there are people out there willing to do the job, what on earth are we moaning about?

And what is the alternative: no teacher ever allowed to fall ill, a full list of understudies maintained at each school at the taxpayers' expense, or classes just left to amuse themselves for a few weeks when a teacher is absent?
