To wonder why people have cleaners

I don't mean this in a rude way I'm just curious how much people really benefit from having a cleaner. They seem to do the hovering, cleaning floors, changing beds, dusting, clean windows and so on. Honestly I don't do much of this very often, maybe hover once a week, change beds every other week, clean windows and dust possibly every other week but probably not. The house still looks fairly nice and clean. Fair enough some people don't have time for this, I don't either really but it seems like it would take up more of my time to tidy all the rooms enough that I'd be happy to let someone see them.

It is interesting isn't it that you see these threads pop up quite frequently but I can't remember ever seeing one asking why people have gardeners.

I think it is because, as vagina-owners, we are supposed to see cleaning as a validation of our womanhood and positively love frolicking about with our dusters and mops whilst the oxytocin courses through our bodies making us warm and glowy as we think lovingly about our beautiful families.

henpeckedinchief · 30/06/2018 11:21

Because I value time more than money. Paying for a cleaner gives me more time with my family, doing what I love. It's a complete no brainer for me.

abigailsnan · 30/06/2018 11:23

We employed a cleaner when I came out hospital after a major operation and have had one ever since, she stayed on after I returned to work part time as hubby worried working and housework where too much at the time.
That lovely lady stayed with us for 8 yrs until she retired and was replaced by her daughter who comes in twice a week for 2hrs at a time.
We dont have a huge house just a small bungalow but she is worth her weight in gold moving out furniture and changing the linen she can reach all those out of the way places I can't I would be lost without her.

PinguDance · 30/06/2018 11:25

I have enough time to clean but I dislike it and find it stressful - my mum would think it’s ludicrous for me to a get a cleaner but I’m tempted!

bluemoonchances · 30/06/2018 11:26

Because I don't like cleaning but like a clean house! Your Sunday morning cleaning I will be spending going out for a nice breakfast... I prefer my Sunday morning!

I got a cleaner when I was single and lived on my own aged in my mid twenties. I got a pay rise at work that worked out about £40 a month, I knew I'd fritter it away so decided to use it on something to make my life better. That was 15 years ago. Best thing I ever did! Life's for living so if you can afford it... why not?!

henpeckedinchief · 30/06/2018 11:26

I spend sunday morning cleaning

Wouldn't you rather be making a fun breakfast or having coffee and newspapers in bed or having sex or going for a run or seeing a friend for coffee or playing a game with your children? I know I would!

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 30/06/2018 11:27

Because I don't want to spend the little free time I have mopping floors and scrubbing loos? I still hoover and wipe things etc (daily jobs) but I have a cleaner who comes for 2 hours a week and mops and does the hoovering under things. It is glorious when I come home on the day she's been.

Basically I want a clean house, I don't want to spend all my time (that I could be spending playing with the kids) and I can afford to pay someone else to do it.

Life is to short to do things that make you miserable of you don't have to

InTheLightOfTheMoon · 30/06/2018 11:29

You only hoover once a week?! what is your secret? I hoover 3 times a day! I dont have a cleaner but its really not hard to imagine why people do. Im struggling to keep on top of the cleaning tbh.

Cliveybaby · 30/06/2018 11:30

I've been totally converted - having a cleaner is awesome, and ours only comes once a fortnight.
Also it forces you to tidy.

Fromage · 30/06/2018 11:42

Why do people have cleaners?

Because they can.

That's all. You're welcome.

macaronip1e · 30/06/2018 11:44

I’d rather not have to spend time at the weekend cleaning. I don’t think that’s hard to understand?

NutElla5x · 30/06/2018 11:47

I wonder why people who don't like cleaning and who could afford to have a cleaner wouldn't have one.It frees up some of your time to do other things and you are providing employment for someone. What's not to like?

AnnaMagnani · 30/06/2018 11:47

Well the answer isn't hard is it. I have one to clean my house.

You spend your Sunday morning cleaning. I don't. I like that I don't have to.

I never change the bed linen, do a quick hoover, clean the windows or the things that you say don't take you very much time. They literally take me no time at all.

Only time hoover comes out in our house except for the cleaner, is to get rid of a spider. But now we have a kitten, she takes care of those too. Poor Henry feels v unloved SadWink

OnlyToWin · 30/06/2018 11:49

People can choose to spend their money on whatever they like.
No need for any justification or reasons to be given.

On a side note - I've noticed people often say "she's got a cleaner" referring to the female in the household - never the man. Now that annoys me.

FermatsTheorem · 30/06/2018 11:50

Crikey, I'd phrase the question more as "if you could afford it, why wouldn't you want a cleaner?" Housecleaning is boring, time-consuming, hard work and that hard work for many of us comes on top of a week out working outside the home.

And provided you pay a living wage, are realistic about your expectations in the time paid for, and hire through an agency that provides sick pay, pension cover and holiday (or if negotiating direct with the cleaner, pay them enough that they can make financial provision for these things themselves), I don't see an ethical problem with it.

FermatsTheorem · 30/06/2018 11:51

PS - I want to be outside in the sun enjoying a bike ride with DS. Instead of which I'm (barring a couple of minutes sit down to take a break on MN) putting away washing, tidying the sitting room, doing the dishes.

Xenia · 30/06/2018 11:52

Hoovering 3 times a day seems a bit much!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/06/2018 12:00

I hate cleaning, and I want an immaculate house.

I can't afford a regular cleaner, but might be able to afford a deep clean one or twice a year - would that be worth doing so you think?

EdWinchester · 30/06/2018 12:08

Because, who likes cleaning and I want a clean house, not a ‘fairly clean’ one?!

Ours does the bathrooms, all floors, dusts throughout, cleans the kitchen and changes the beds.

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 30/06/2018 12:13

The cleaner is quicker than me so she does in two hours what would take me three. She also forced me to tidy up once a week. I could find the three hours myself but I'd rather not.

longwayoff · 30/06/2018 12:15

Because my back hurts and I dont like a manky house.

Marymarg · 30/06/2018 12:32

Because we do the things the client doesn't have time to do. I pull settees out,. I clean behind things, I clean corners, I iron.
I'm a cleaner & sometimes consider getting someone in to clean my house. It would be so lovely to come home to a lovely clean house!

HungerOfThePine · 30/06/2018 12:33

To clean as pp mentioned, Grin.

Iv worked a wide client base and most are working professionals with one or more young children and would like to come home to a sparkly house.

People with disabilities or conditions that makes cleaning physically difficult for them or just its not on there radar but they know it needs done so hire someone.

Tradesmen with constantly dusty houses due to their trade so having someone in to keep on top of it in a professional capacity is great.

Didn't last long in a home of someone who's house was sparkling and I was just cleaning what was already clean.

I don't clean my house near enough as well as I clean my clients although it is clean.
If could afford it I would have a cleaner Grin.

mimibunz · 30/06/2018 12:34

Because I want one and I can afford it.

Lovemyhubby · 30/06/2018 12:39

As soon as I move, I’m getting a cleaner. I hate housework but enjoy the mental benefits of living in a clean and tidy environment. A cleaner will be quicker, achieve more and do a superior job to myself as I’m just so disinterested! I used to be really cheap about things such as outsourcing, until I realised just how valuable my time actually is. It’s certainly worth more than what I’d pay a cleaner to do a mundane activity I hate. So if you can afford one, why wouldn’t you free up your time, so you can do something more productive or have some down time?
