To wonder why people have cleaners

I don't mean this in a rude way I'm just curious how much people really benefit from having a cleaner. They seem to do the hovering, cleaning floors, changing beds, dusting, clean windows and so on. Honestly I don't do much of this very often, maybe hover once a week, change beds every other week, clean windows and dust possibly every other week but probably not. The house still looks fairly nice and clean. Fair enough some people don't have time for this, I don't either really but it seems like it would take up more of my time to tidy all the rooms enough that I'd be happy to let someone see them.

I really don't like the idea of someone else cleaning my house. I'd rather it was a bit grubby.

LastGirlsFinishNice · 30/06/2018 13:37

@TheVonTrappFamilySwingers ditto! And I deserve it!

suckonthatmaureen · 30/06/2018 13:39

I have a large house, with 3 bathrooms. It's also Victorian, with dust magnet picture rails, coving etc.
I'll be fucked if I'm going to spend my precious weekends cleaning that lot.

AnnUnderTheFryingPan · 30/06/2018 13:40

I would cry a lot if I didn’t have a cleaner.

Because she does in 3 hours what it would take me 6 to do.

I have 4 children, a job, am a single parent and a big house. I have no family and XH doesn’t have the children ever. I do everything, on my own and by myself. Day after day. If the oven breaks, I fix it. If the car needs taxing, I tax it. If there’s meeting at school, Sports days, football matches, I’m there.

She is the only help I have. I am not exaggerating when I say her work keeps me sane.

midnightmisssuki · 30/06/2018 13:41

Because we have two young children and two dogs, becasue we can afford it. Becasue we work long hours sometimes and because my husband travels for work, often for weeks. Because I like the house clean, especially as we have dogs. becasue my time is limited and I want to spend as much time as I can with the children.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/06/2018 13:43

I have cleaners in once a month because I have depression and insomnia, and really struggle to motivate myself because of the tiredness these cause.

The cleaners whip through downstairs, and leave the place looking good, and then I can keep on top of it the other weeks of the month. When I didn’t have the cleaners, I couldn’t keep on top of things well enough, and the house would get to the stage where cleaning it up was too big a job.

I know this sounds feeble - and probably lazy too - but it works for me.

Pippylou · 30/06/2018 13:43

I was a cleaner many years ago, I used to love cleaning that house, it sparkled. Can't do the same to my own house, think it was the focus and no distractions of stuff to sort. I just cleaned...

I'd like a cleaner but don't want people in my house.

WineAndTiramisu · 30/06/2018 13:44

To help local employment?

Joking, it's because I hate cleaning and am lazy. Am on maternity leave currently, have made it to 10 weeks without a cleaner (we moved house just before DD born), the house is a mess, cleaner starts next week. I can't stand cleaning but love a clean house.

Metoodear · 30/06/2018 13:44

I work pt but I have 3 kids 2 of whom have sn and we have a four bed with a massive kitchen lounge and playroom

Life is too short it’s all fine when you don’t work

LakieLady · 30/06/2018 13:45

I'd like a cleaner because it would force me to tidy up!

Andro · 30/06/2018 13:47

I have a big house, a full-time job (as does dh) and high standards - I also loathe housework. GIven that I can easily afford to pay a cleaner to do most of it for me, that's what I do. She's been with me years, is paid ~2x the average because of her specialist skill set and is worth every penny.

Hedgehog80 · 30/06/2018 13:48

I have a cleaner because I have 5 children and I’m disorganised and struggle to get everything done myself.
She comes twice a week for 5 hours in total it’s a godsend

bbcessex · 30/06/2018 13:48

That is a really funny question OP! 😂

Sort of like:

Who do people have groceries delivered?
Why do people have window cleaners?
Why do people have gardeners?
Why do people have milk men?

Generally to do the jobs they can’t , don’t have time or just don’t want to do, I suppose 😃

Alicatz66 · 30/06/2018 13:54

I have one every other Thursday so I can take that weekend off housework.. I just do laundry and essentials. Me and DP Work a lot of hours and don't want to spend the whole weekend cleaning ! ... also it makes me tidy up more in case the cleaners judge me Smile

OhTheRoses · 30/06/2018 13:57

Ha - I've just remembered my mother's rare bits of support.

MIL: "I expect you'll be letting the cleaner go now that you are at home with a baby"

Ma: "I hope not, I didn't bring her up to clean".

Me silently "and I'm a darn sight cleaner than you MIL, in spite of being brought up not to do it"
Grin

I work about 55 hrs a week plus an overnight on call, and I have elderly parents who need a lot of input from me. My downtime is precious to me and I don’t want to spend it cleaning, hoovering or changing bed linen. I love coming home after my cleaner has been, the house is sparkling clean and the bed is freshly changed, all that’s left for me to do is relax and enjoy it!

It’s not that expensive- she charges €25 for 2 hours. In those two hours I do a private contracted job for which I charge €500, so it makes perfect sense to me.

jarhead123 · 30/06/2018 14:00

You hoover once a week?

I have to hoover downstairs at least once a day!

Birdsgottafly · 30/06/2018 14:04

Never knock someone spreading money around Society (unless it's for drugs/prostitution!).

I couldn't live with your lack of housework, OP, but that's a personal thing. I like cleaning. I've cleaned for elderly relatives and people with Newborns etc.

It's more that I don't like to sit, so will clean whilst watching the telly etc.

Hastalapasta · 30/06/2018 14:16

Saves my sanity, she does more in 2 hrs than I can manage, house looks and smells nice for days after she has been.

DarlingNikita · 30/06/2018 14:21

Another one of these threads?

My answer's the same as always. I have a cleaner because none of us in our household want to clean ourselves, we're happy to pay for a cleaner's services and we can afford it.

No one needs to justify having a cleaner by saying they work/have kids/have pets/are disabled/whatever. No one feels the need to justify paying a window cleaner.

I wish I could hover, though.

DanglyEarOrnaments · 30/06/2018 14:23

We are cleaners with well over 100 regular clients and when I go to quote I repeatedly get told why they want us (I don't ask, none of my beeswax but most just tell me).

In order of most common/least common reasons given:

  1. The majority are working families who want their weekends back to enjoy time together.
  1. Quite a few people are too elderly/disabled and just cannot manage it all any more.
  1. A rare few just can easily afford it and hate doing it even thought they've not much else to do but these are rare. I tell them there's no shame in it because we want the work and they don't - it's just business. It's just like getting a takeaway when you hate cooking, the shop appreciates the business and you get a meal.
InTheLightOfTheMoon · 30/06/2018 14:27

Hoovering 3 times a day seems a bit much!

not when you have 4 kids!

Claireshh · 30/06/2018 14:31

I’m a stay st home mum and have one. I do bits of cleaning everyday. I love that on a Friday everywhere is clean for the weekend. It’s a luxury I know and would be the first thing to go if money got tight.

Sparklesocks · 30/06/2018 14:33

Surely most people do it essentially to buy back the time they would’ve spent cleaning?

Sometimes coming home to a messy house after a hard day at work makes your heart sink because you realise you’re not done yet. But coming home to a pristine house?? Get the wine out Smile

kaytee87 · 30/06/2018 14:34

It's really not hard to understand; they either don't want to clean, can't clean or don't have time to.
