To wonder why people have cleaners

I don't mean this in a rude way I'm just curious how much people really benefit from having a cleaner. They seem to do the hovering, cleaning floors, changing beds, dusting, clean windows and so on. Honestly I don't do much of this very often, maybe hover once a week, change beds every other week, clean windows and dust possibly every other week but probably not. The house still looks fairly nice and clean. Fair enough some people don't have time for this, I don't either really but it seems like it would take up more of my time to tidy all the rooms enough that I'd be happy to let someone see them.

Because some people want their house cleaned properly more than ‘maybe once a week, maybe not’
We have a dog and four kids, there’s no way hoovering and dusting is as optional as it sounds in your house

LastGirlsFinishNice · 30/06/2018 10:23

.... because I'd rather pay someone else to do my cleaning than do it myself....? Is that allowed?! I don't enjoy cleaning and would rather spend the time playing with my children or OH 🤷‍♀️

famousfour · 30/06/2018 10:23

To clean my house. I love coming home to a clean house. I don't want to spend my weekends cleaning - rather spend it with the children. I still have to do day to day hoovering and wiping down. I chose my flooring and surfaces unwisely and they show every bit of mess up so if not cleaned regularly the house looks dreadful.

PQ77 · 30/06/2018 10:23

Because i have other things I'd rather do in the 6 hours spare time this gives me? I pay my cleaner £12/hr and I earn significantly more per hr in the contracting work her efforts free me up to take on

didsomeonesaybunny · 30/06/2018 10:25

I have a cleaner come twice a week and in that time she works wonders and does the usual changing of sheets, hoovers and dusts etc.

Then, she’ll do other tasks like clean the cooker, the inside of my windows, clean out the fridge and cleaning out the cupboards.

I work long hours, earn good money and I’d rather spend my weekends doing the stuff I love rather than cleaning.

My cleaner is worth her weight in gold.

thecatsabsentcojones · 30/06/2018 10:25

I've just got a cleaner. We're in a fairly large house and it's a bugger to get round (there's nothing worse than starting one end to find the other being dismantled by the kids, it's like painting the effing Forth Bridge). I clean at the same time as her and between us we crack it, otherwise it just can't be done in one go.

NameChangingParanoid · 30/06/2018 10:28

I can’t understand why you wouldn’t have a cleaner if you can afford one?!!

herethereandeverywhere · 30/06/2018 10:31

I have a housekeeper 3 days a week. She cleans, tidies, does the washing and ironing and puts it all away, changes the beds every week (still adore the luxury of crisp, fresh, white ironed bedlinen once a week) does the dishwasher and occasional cleaning like windows, fridge, oven.

She can't cook (previous one could) or I'd have her doing that too.

I work 3 days a week and on the other 2 I sort food shopping and general admin. Husband works LONG hours. The rest of the time we have quality time with the kids, or on our own (like my coffee and mumsnet moment I'm currently having).

Life's too short to do menial crap if you can afford not to.

(I appreciate we are fking fortunate to be able to afford it, but we worked/work fking hard to get here!)

PolkerrisBeach · 30/06/2018 10:31

Because I loathe and detest cleaning and can afford to pay someone else to do it.

My cleaner doesn't do laundry. She cleans, dusts, washes floors, does the bathroom etc. She's not that great at "hovering" though...

Because not eveyone lives in houses of the same size and configuration?

Hanuman · 30/06/2018 10:36

Because I don't want to spend my time cleaning and I can afford it.

proofreadinglady · 30/06/2018 10:37

Because hoovering once a week is disgusting

Xenia · 30/06/2018 10:39

Depends on your own situation. We had one - in fact she came 5 mornings a week for a good few years and then 3. I now do it myself as the 3 boys left in September so I don't generate much mess myself and the hassle of having someone in is worse than just doing it myself. However when we had 5 children, both worked full time and a nanny here messing up the place having someone here 5 mornings a week was a massive help. She did all the washing and ironing and putting clothes away, beds too and towels. She also emptied the dishwasher, washed up etc. She hoovered every day - downstairs gets quite bad if you have 8 people plus their friends on it every day particularly with toddler twins around. She also received the on line shopping and put it all away, put bins out on bin day etc etc.

However we certainly had an early period both working full time, babies and could not afford a cleaner so often it's just down to money.

If you are both working 60 or 70 hours a week which I am sure we were at times then you hardly have time to go to the loo nor eat never mind change 7 beds, vacuum every day.

raindropsandsunshine · 30/06/2018 10:40

Really? I'd love one!

TeasndToast · 30/06/2018 10:41

Because I don’t want a ‘fairly’ clean house, I like a ‘very’ clean house and the jobs you do once a week, we do more often. My cleaner does the things I have less time to do daily such as buffing all the kitchen cupboards with a micro fibre cloth, getting all the little spots off, going round the conservatory window frames and roof groove getting all the bloody dead flies out, limescale removal on shower glass and buffing it up, dusting the blinds etc so I still have time to do the every day stuff as well as working full time, studying and dealing with 4 DC.

MissusGeneHunt · 30/06/2018 10:41

I want a cleaner who 'hovers', so cool... Grin

Seriously though I will get one as soon as I sort my finances out. I work stupid hours, have a teenager, a thoroughly lovely but useless DP, want to have more quality time, have arthritis, and want a cleaner house!

HesterShaw1 · 30/06/2018 10:42

What an odd thing to wonder.

AIBU to wonder why people send their cars to the garage?
AIBU to wonder why people take their clothes to the dry cleaners?
AIBU to wonder why people go to the supermarket?
AIBU to wonder why people get a plumber in occasionally?

StUmbrageinSkelt · 30/06/2018 10:43

Because I am the carer for three people with disability and can use funding for the cleaning they can't do.

WhipItGood · 30/06/2018 10:44

What’s to wonder about? Why wouldn’t you if you can? Confused

AhhhhThatsBass · 30/06/2018 10:44

Because I’d sooner pay someone to clean my toilets than do it myself. The way I see it is I earn a good bit more than the £11 an hour I pay my cleaner so theoretically my time is relatively more valuable from a purely monetary perspective.
Plus i work f/t and can afford it. For me that’s a moot point because there is a lot I would sacrifice to have a cleaner. I derive a lot of satisfaction from having a sparkling house that I haven’t had to clean myself.

notproductive · 30/06/2018 10:45

Because I’m lazy

BillThePony · 30/06/2018 10:45

Mainly because we work really long hours and We don't want to spend half a day of our precious weekend doing housework.

trojanpony · 30/06/2018 10:45

Because I like a clean house, I’m busy and I can afford one.

I like sleeping so get up 7-8 for work. I go out with friends 1-2 nights a week, gym after work 2-3 times and occasionally work late.
Weekends I like to spend quality time with boyfriend and family / friends. We often do mini breaks and day trips. I don’t want to spend my weeks getting likescale off the sodding taps and it’s a problem I can pay to make go away.

I would give up MANY things before I went back to hoovering, ironing and cleaning the limescale in the bathroom.

MrsJBaptiste · 30/06/2018 10:46

I'd hate to have a cleaner. Someone coming once a week to clean the house is not enough for me. I'd rather hoover every other day, quick dust once a week and keep the kitchen and bathroom clean every day (a quick wipe down and mop the floor takes 10 mins)

Now a gardener I would like...
