Friday and colleagues decide to go buy breakfast from the canteen, ask if I want to go, I say no thanks I’m just going to have my shake.

Colleague replies “mmm nutritious”

Yes much more nutritious than the giant breakfast cob you’re going to stuff in your mouth.

I like a protein shake after the gym, I still eat 3 good meals each day.

@adaline

But the op didn't actually say that to her colleague. We are all allowed to think what we like. The issue comes when we actually say it.

missyB1 · 29/06/2018 22:22

Why didn’t you just say “no but thanks for asking”

Mentioning the shake thing just made you sound a bit annoying.

LuxeLisbon · 29/06/2018 22:22

Life's too fucking short to worry about shit like this.

To you. But I’m not you.

I work with the same people 40 hours a week, 5 days a week.

I think who you work with and the personal comments you may have from colleagues you’re constantly seeing can actually have an impact on you.

I go to the gym at 6am. It helps me hit my macros and my muscles recover faster

If you are speaking like that to your colleagues I can see why they are sniping at you. It comes across a bit holier than thou.

Somersetter · 29/06/2018 22:24

I agree you shouldn't have mentioned the shake - she's probably writing her own AIBU about that right now.

Why not just say "no thanks I've had breakfast already" or "no thanks I've brought breakfast with me" or just plain "no thanks"? If the shake wasn't a meal replacement it didn't really need mentioning at all did it?

LuxeLisbon · 29/06/2018 22:25

Why didn’t you just say “no but thanks for asking”

Mentioning the shake thing just made you sound a bit annoying.

Because I was sat there on the edge of my seat waiting for someone to mention anything that I could bring up the fact I was having a shake.

Or you know it was just something I said without thinking because I was actually drinking the shake at the time.

mistermagpie · 29/06/2018 22:25

It's not 'food' though is it? It's a milkshake. I suspect that's why they commented.

Don't get me wrong, I'm quite sporty and all that, but I don't act all holier than thou if someone asks me if I want a bacon roll. I just say no thanks.

girlandboy · 29/06/2018 22:26

But what the heck are macros?!! apart from a camera lens

LuxeLisbon · 29/06/2018 22:26

Maybe I should have mentioned that I was drinking said shake when I was asked.

I hadn’t already had it or was planning on having it.

QueenDoris · 29/06/2018 22:26

What is a macro? Is it like a micro, but larger?

LuxeLisbon · 29/06/2018 22:27

But what the heck are macros?!! apart from a camera lens

You could just google it.

butlerswharf · 29/06/2018 22:27

No clue why anyone would get bothered by a comment like that!

The correct answer to a sarcastic "mmm delicious" is "mmm bitchy". Wink

Somersetter · 29/06/2018 22:28

But the shake wasn't actually your breakfast was it? So presumably you'd either had your breakfast already or were about to have it?

Fruitcorner123 · 29/06/2018 22:28

*macro
[mak-roh]

adjective
very large in scale, scope, or capability*

Rudi44 · 29/06/2018 22:29

God get over it, it was a joke. Perhaps they thought you were being judgemental by stating you were going to have your shake. Why not just say ‘thanks but no thanks’

girlandboy · 29/06/2018 22:29

Op "you could just Google it"

Rude! I'm thinking that you're quite hard work.

LeighaJ · 29/06/2018 22:30

Protein shakes are really normal after work-outs, not sure why the raised eyebrows over it.

I can barely stomach meat after giving birth and I'm lactose intolerant so feel like protein water is my best shot.

I had a co-worker who made comments almost daily about my eating habits, while I was pregnant. Drove me nuts.

Racecardriver · 29/06/2018 22:30

Macro proteins? Or macro amino acids?

OP just get over it.

usernamefromhell · 29/06/2018 22:31

Luxe sorry if that sounded dismissive. I know things like this can hurt. But if you work in an office with people for 40 hours a week there is going to be friction, people are going to piss one another off from time to time. People are going to be judgemental about one another's life choices. Sometimes offices can be like a family but in the bad way.

I have had far, far worse said to me at work by people who basically love me to bits. It happens. Sometimes people can hit a raw nerve around something that's very sensitive. And if that is a particularly sensitive you should have a word with them and tell them they've crossed a boundary.

But this is pretty gentle ribbing. And unless you have an eating disorder or a health issue I can't see why you would be taking it as a personal insult. I'm afraid you have to develop a thicker skin.

I guess you aren't as snippy as this in real life or your workmates wouldn't ask you to go to the canteen with them. I'm sure they will soon learn.

QueenDoris · 29/06/2018 22:34

I have just googled macro. None the fucking wiser.

"macro (short for "macroinstruction", from Greek μακρός 'long') in computer science is a rule or pattern that specifies how a certain input sequence (often a sequence of characters) should be mapped to a replacement output sequence"
