To wonder why the still play Michael Jackson songs?

What with the #metoo movement and so many actors, entertainers, directors, singers and comedians being (rightly in most cases) shutdown, why do they still play Michael Jackson songs on the radio?

I automatically turn it over. Why does he get a free pass? Because he's dead? I thought though all the allegations were proven? I don't get it?

@LuMarie

At least OP is alive to defend themselves

SharronNeedles · 29/06/2018 19:59

I don't understand what you mean? What punishment do you want? You asky why his music is still played yet say you don't want it banned... So what do you want? It's either played or it's not.

LuMarie · 29/06/2018 20:08

This could have been an interesting an intelligent discussion sharing views.

But instead.....

SickOfSitting · 29/06/2018 20:10

If my child was abused by a man, famous or not, I would want that man castrated locked up for a long time! No way would I settle out of court for a sum of money. They were clearly in it to get money!

MJ was not guilty in court. Or does that not stand now? Is everyone who is proven innocent court actually guilty?

Why would they stop playing his music? He was proven innocent! And I expect it was investigated with a FINE tooth comb!

SheerKhan · 29/06/2018 20:16

You can dislike an artist but love their art.
Do you think that millions of people will suddenly stop playing MJ songs because of the things he allegedly did? Nope. It will not happen.
Similarly, people will always watch Hitchcock or Woody Allen films. What are you going to do about it?

acatcalledjohn · 29/06/2018 20:17

I don't know either way. I was just wondering why the music was still being played, when other people in the industry seem to have been 'punished' for seemingly less...

Well, that's what being found guilty in a court of law does.

MJ was found not guilty. Fuck me, the trial went on for long enough so if they weren't able to conclusively prove he was guilty then we have to reasonably assume he wasn't guilty.

You really want to get out of the heat.

greendale17 · 29/06/2018 20:19

Same as R.Kelly- his music is still played

LouMumsnet · 29/06/2018 21:28

Thanks for the reports about this thread. We've had a look and we can see why folk were concerned in light of Michael Jackson being found not guilty of all charges.

It looks like the OP has been put right on that now though.

It's a tricky one but we think that, actually, there's an interesting discussion here in terms of the entertainment industry and #metoo in general.

There are certainly some excellent posts on the thread and it would be a real shame to zap the whole thing. So we're going to leave it standing for now but, as ever, please do report any posts which you feel break talk guidelines.

Thanks all.

Tistheseason17 · 29/06/2018 22:15

People are found guilty when there is sufficient evidence to prove guilt.

Some people are found not guilty due to insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution - doesn't mean they didn't do it.

My opinion, which I suspect is in the minority, is there is some truth in it. Therefore, I don't listen to Michael Jackson songs. I also don't listen to R Kelly, or any other artist with a grey area on this issue on purpose as I don't want to line their pockets.

I actually, won't watch Kevin Spacey, either....

But, if you do, I don't have a problem with your choice.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/06/2018 22:21

we can forgive him that as he wrote Thriller

Rod Temperton wrote Thriller, originally as a song called "starlight". Then michael jackson wasn't happy with the lyrics and Quincy Jones told him it was crap. He then came up with the horror theme and he again most wrote the lyrics to Thriller

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/06/2018 22:23

Wrote most of the*

LucilleBluth · 29/06/2018 22:33

Would any mother here allow MJ access to their child. He was odd, he was odd around children....creating a theme park, hanging out with child stars etc. Wired weird weird. If it was a guy on your street you would hound him out.

I love...really love Woody Allen films and his New Yorker articles from the 70s and I see that pps have already mentioned him. He was also never convicted but his reputation is in tatters, unlike MJ. It IS odd. I do acknowledge that Woody Allen has some questionable relationships with women but why do some men get a pass and others don't.

SheerKhan · 29/06/2018 22:47

I am not sure Jackson wasn't guilty. He had way too much closeness with kids and spent way too much time with them. Grown men are not even remotely interested in spending time with other people's little kids unless they have an unhealthy interest in them.
If an average man from the neighbourhood built a playground in his back garden for random kids, all the worried parents would lock up their children and the police would soon be knocking on this man's door.

Tistheseason17 · 29/06/2018 22:50

@LucilleBluth

I don't watch Woody Allen. The judge's findings were informative

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 29/06/2018 22:51

Basically to answer the question, he was found not guilty. Regardless of everyone who has never met him's opinion he is, under the law, an innocent man.

peoplearemean · 29/06/2018 22:52

He was found not guilty. Weird? yes. Abuser? unsure. Musical genius? Absolutely!

His music is timeless my 3 year old gets in the car and demands Bad! How old is that song? 30 years +?

NotASingleFuckToGive · 29/06/2018 22:55

MJ has not been convicted of any offence.

I have much more of a problem with the odious hypocrite that is Meryl Streep tbh.
The 'feminist', activist and campaigner for the #MeToo movement; stood up in 2003 whooping and cheering publicly for child rapist and her good friend Roman Polanski, and added her name to the Hollywood elite stars publicly supporting him after his conviction.

Uptheduffy · 29/06/2018 23:54

I have found it very interesting to see so many posters convinced of MJ’s innocence of inappropriate behaviour towards children, as the people I meet in real life (on the rare occasions the singer comes up) all seem to accept that he was guilty of such behaviour. There doesn’t seem to be an appropriate alternative explanation for some of his behaviour. I do find it hard to reconcile enjoying music (or actors) when I know the behaviour in RL has been really bad. I think our tolerance for “hate the man, not the art” is decreasing over time and this is no bad thing.

Branleuse · 30/06/2018 00:03

He was found not guilty , he's dead, and his music was incredible.
if he had done it , it would have come out by now

stellenbosch · 30/06/2018 00:20

On a separate note, the Starlight thing is crazy! All I could hear were the Thriller lyrics! Excellent post - thank you - hadn't heard that before!

Yeah, you can't discount the weird behaviour. And as for the "it would have come out by now", that's codswallop. If people were 'paid off' or signed ndas...

OP posts:
littlemissdynamite · 30/06/2018 00:25

FFS! Hmm

RedDwarves · 30/06/2018 00:28

4 pages in and you're still harping on with the same rubbish you opened the thread with, blatantly ignoring those who've said that they've looked into the trials, read the transcripts etc.

Also, If people were 'paid off' or signed ndas..., you certainly would've heard about it by now. It's been almost a decade since the bloke died. Something credible would've come out by now if anything had happened.

littlemissdynamite · 30/06/2018 00:30

MJ did nothing wrong. The tales of his supposed misdemeanours were full of holes. And that is why he was acquitted.

What a vile thread!

Please delete it MN!
