AIBU to think school should finish now?

This really lovely hot weather seems to happen at the end of June and in July each year. Yet the children still have to go into school when most other countries have finished for the summer. Then have the whole of August off when the end of August is notoriously bad (always around the bank holiday!) and the summer solstice is long gone.
AIBU to think we should move the summer holidays earlier?

I agree, the summer holidays should at least start at the end of June. This Friday would be the ideal to finish the term up.
I wonder if someone will actually start the change of it.

Unhomme · 28/06/2018 06:22

On average August average temperatures are higher than June so I'd say Yabu to want school holidays when other countries do.

Nyancat · 28/06/2018 06:26

I'm in NI and our lot finish tomorrow until September! They are absolutely ready for a break and the weather is always far better in June / July. I remember loving 8 whole weeks stretching out when I was little.

Buggeroffalo · 28/06/2018 06:28

I’m in Scotland. My lot finish tomorrow too.

whylie · 28/06/2018 06:29

I'm based in north east region and this weather we have been having really isn't the norm, so I would stick with having the 6 weeks were they are having the whole of August off.
Lucky enough my DC have a pd day tomorrow and on Monday, Which I must say I'm quite happy about, instead of them having to be stuck in a stuffy/sweaty classroom all day..😊

Tink2007 · 28/06/2018 06:30

I agree. My DDs secondary school is already letting them have “chilled” lessons where they are doing nothing.

All their tests etc were done at the end of May. The next three weeks seems pretty pointless to me.

Decorhate · 28/06/2018 06:35

OP I say this every year. The best of the weather is over by the time we break up. I'd prefer to have the same as Scotland- start of July to middle of August.

speakout · 28/06/2018 06:52

I agree about the weather.
I'm in Scotland too- school here breaks tomorrow 29th June.

Seems us and NI are out of kilter with most of the rest of Europe- and England, who all break mid to late July.

For us Celts that means super cheap holidays to Mediterranean resorts, the season has not quite started, so when we go abroad we choose to go at the very end of June, as most of Europe haven't started their school break.
Hotels are quieter and cheaper, flights are cheaper- even more so if we can travel to Newcastle ( only a 90 minute drive), we take advantage of the slightly off peak prices.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/06/2018 06:59

It does seem a bit ridiculous that England seems out of 'synch' with the rest of the northern hemisphere when it comes to school summer hols. And it's not as if it makes holidays anywhere cheaper so what is the point?

LadyPeacock · 28/06/2018 06:59

My DS's prep finishes on Friday until 8th September.

Daisydrum · 28/06/2018 14:12

@unhomme
The proper comparison would be July and August. And July on average is warmer than August. Not to mention the days are longer too! However my DS has three weeks of school in July (on average the hottest month of the year) yet has all of August and the first week in September off.

@martagonlilies I am thinking about starting a petition. If we get enough signatures it at least has to be discussed in parliament. If it helped I wouldn’t mind forgetting about the February half term to add an extra week to Summer.

Agree, August always seems rainy and colder these past few years.

I wouldn't like them going mid-August thought like Scotland as I like going abroad at the end of Aug.

Don't think that's true. Lots of European countries seem to start the summer holidays end of June/early July and have a couple of months off. Germany staggers them so some regions are earlier and others later.
England is later to break up than most.

Daisydrum · 28/06/2018 14:24

Thank you to all. I personally would prefer to move inline with NI and Scotland. It makes sense for the children to have July off.
It seems like most of Europe finish a lot earlier too. Why are we out of sync?

We finished yesterday (scotland) as you say, the nights are drawing in now. We'll still have three weeks off in August, thats plenty.

Though I would like two weeks off in october.

Bigkingdom · 28/06/2018 14:39

I agree. Every single year the kids spend all the best weather shoved in a classroom and then spend the ‘summer’ holidays stuck indoors because of bad weather. Makes no sense.

ManicUnicorn · 28/06/2018 14:44

bellini School isn't childcare!

Fluffyears · 28/06/2018 14:47

Some kids stopped yesterday in Scotland, we don’t have a half term at the start of June up here. Scotland’s weather is broken, i’ve Never seen 30c up here!

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/06/2018 14:49

France have longer holidays because the children go to school for longer hours. Rather like private school.

Is this the same in NI and Scotland?

I already struggle with the time dd is off as I’m chronically ill and disabled. No more, please.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 28/06/2018 14:51

Last year the August bank holiday was absolutely roasting.
