AIBU to think school should finish now?

This really lovely hot weather seems to happen at the end of June and in July each year. Yet the children still have to go into school when most other countries have finished for the summer. Then have the whole of August off when the end of August is notoriously bad (always around the bank holiday!) and the summer solstice is long gone.
AIBU to think we should move the summer holidays earlier?

Bigkingdom where do you live where your kids have been stuck indoors all August for the last few years? Last truly bad summer I can remember was about 2009.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 28/06/2018 14:52

I'm happy the way things are, it's much easier entertaining mine when the weather is cooler. When it's as hot as this we all want to stay inside out of the heat.

BitchQueen90 · 28/06/2018 14:52

Well as a working mother who struggles finding childcare I certainly do not want them to have any more time off.

OlennasWimple · 28/06/2018 14:54

We're not in the UK (and have roughly the same, hot weather all year round) and finished school this week. They go back in early August but have fewer decent length breaks once the school year gets going (no February half term plus long Easter break, for example).

I think whenever the end of term is, everyone is running on empty for the last two weeks of the school year anyway

IfNot · 28/06/2018 14:58

YANBU!!!!
British summer is June and July. It just is.
I'm in the North and EVERY year the end of June and beginning of July is boiling, and every August we go to the seaside and it's humid, grey and overcast.
By mid August the leaves are starting to turn.
Midsummer has just been, yet our kids are in school nearly another month.
There is no reason for kids to be off in August anymore as so few are needed at Harvest, it's just completely archaic.
It's also much nicer on the continent in June than in August-I would go to Spain in June but never August.
If someone starts a campaign I'll join!

AlfredDaButtler · 28/06/2018 15:00

Mine break off at lunchtime tomorrow until the 15th August. This is the hottest day we've had (in Scotland anyway) since something like 1995, so I wouldn't be basing any term date changes on it.

And selfishly, we get medium-priced holidays if we go at the very start of our holidays before you lot break off and the prices shoot up, and I can't be doing with losing that Grin

Myotherusernameisbest · 28/06/2018 15:00

YANBU The few weeks before school breaks up always seem to be nice weather! We've lived in a couple of european countries and the schools there always finish by now and they get 2 months off with slightly longer school days. Much better I reckon!

IfNot · 28/06/2018 15:01

I don't want longer holidays (God forbid) just earlier.
Also a knock on effect would be that Autumn half term would be September (lovely) instead of end of October. .

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/06/2018 15:03

But then how do you play it to Christmas? The autumn term would be very long.

YouCantBeSirius · 28/06/2018 15:03

Mine finished this afternoon until mid August. They are currently having a water fight in the garden to cool down.

BarefootHippieChick · 28/06/2018 15:03

Scotland and NI won't be happy if our holidays start earlier because then they won't get cheap deals anymore 😁 Also I wouldn't want to get rid of the February half term, that could mean a possible 14 week term from Xmas to Easter, too long without a break for little ones.

Dahlietta · 28/06/2018 15:06

YABU. The nice weather is here precisely because the kids are in school. If you moved the holidays, the nice weather would move. Have you never noticed how beautiful the first few weeks of September are, without fail?

Oops, sorry for the double post!

TheletterZ · 28/06/2018 15:10

Move the summer holiday earlier and start the school earlier, then make the October break into two weeks so there are 4 roughly even lengthed terms

And stop with moving the spring break around, have it fixed and if it falls over Easter yeah and if not then it is an extra long weekend.

BarefootHippieChick · 28/06/2018 15:11

Dahlietta that's just so true!

bluebird14 · 28/06/2018 15:15

I think it's ridiculous to have children in stuffy classrooms when it's daylight until 10 and another three weeks to go.

IfNot · 28/06/2018 15:15

Not sure littledragon...in a way though a long term in autumn is a good thing maybe? Get lots done. There are so many distractions between them going back to school in early November and xmas, what with plays and parties.

IfNot · 28/06/2018 15:17

It's light till at least half ten here!

Timeisslippingaway · 28/06/2018 15:18

My kids finish tomorrow. When does school holidays start in England?

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/06/2018 15:23

My dd goes back a couple of days before the August bank holiday. That’s already a very long term for the children with only one week at half term. The younger children are exhausted not to mention School staff so I’m not so sure it’s a good idea from a scholastic POV. My dd has boundless energy and can cope.

Dancergirl · 28/06/2018 15:24

If you're in Scotland and break up soon, when do they go back? Doesn't it make it a very long term until Christmas?

Dancergirl · 28/06/2018 15:24

time my dd breaks up on 26th July!

steff13 · 28/06/2018 15:27

How long are your summer holidays? Here it varies by school district, but my kids' last day was May 23rd, and they go back on September 4th. August is our hottest month, the temperatures stay around 95 F (35 C).

IfNot · 28/06/2018 15:27

Yeah maybe 2 weeks in Autumn is the answer. If they go back in early October's (late September early Oct is usually lovely) Then that's only like 10 weeks of term then.
