Shell fish in nursery lunchbox

Nicpem1982 · 27/06/2018 16:07

Posting for traffic really so apologies

Dd has started to have packed lunch at nursery and the guidance I was given was just send her with what she will eat although we're a healthy eating school.

She's asked for prawn and cherry tomato skewers for tomorrow which is fine for me but is shell fish on the no list like nuts normally?

Sorry new to this lunch thing....

whoever would have thought sucking brains out of prawns was a Friday night childhood treat?

No cod and chips in newspaper there then.

CoralFish · 28/06/2018 13:20

Lemongrass skewers with prawns and tomatoes for nursery age DD. I think we have reached peak Mumsnet. Grin

BertrandRussell · 28/06/2018 13:22

You do have to be careful with prawns for very little children- they have a lot of iodine in them which can be bad for thyroid development.

FunnysInLaJardin · 28/06/2018 13:55

Hilarious Grin

FWIW my DS1 who is 12 hates tomatoes and has a pathological love of all kinds of shellfish.........

DS2 has an excellent memory...........

Prawns at school? No - too smelly as with eggs and tuna.

Loandbeholdagain · 28/06/2018 14:04

OP sorry you’re being given a hard time, valid question and valid lunch. For what it’s worth my three year old loves nothing better than a prawn skewers. In fact we (me and two toddlers) had prawns, sugar snap peas, tomatoes and olive bread for lunch. So sue me, I like nice food. Ignore the reverse snobbery brigade. Her lunch sounds delish to me.

WendyCope · 28/06/2018 14:57

Nobody is saying it's not delicious, or that seafood is 'a big deal' they are saying, with good reason, that prawns are not a good idea for a packed lunch in warm weather. End of. No reverse snobbery.

Like a pp said, no tuna or eggs either, stinky/made fun of. You get to learn these things as your child gets older.

Likewise no chocolate in hot weather.

CaptainBrickbeard · 28/06/2018 15:24

Where is the reverse snobbery? I’ve seen posts expressing surprise and suggesting it isn’t a good idea but I think perhaps people are expecting reverse snobbery and reading it into posts where it isn’t particularly. The most horrified reactions weren’t to the prawns but to the skewers. And where prawns were disagreed with it wasn’t on the basis of their exoticism so much as the dangers of food poisoning. I really don’t think people have given the OP an especially hard time over prawns themselves. The most irate posters have been the pro-prawn flank, I particular the suggestion that those of us who didn’t wean with shellfish are failures Grin.

PorkFlute · 28/06/2018 16:33

What’s the problem with prawns if the lunches are refrigerated though? My kids would love a good prawn mayo sarnie if their school refrigerated the lunches.

MindFracture7 · 28/06/2018 17:51

I guess the obvious answer is to use a Cool bag with a couple of Freezer packs in to keep it cold.

FaveNumberIs2 · 28/06/2018 18:03

Why don’t you just ask the school?

FaveNumberIs2 · 28/06/2018 18:08

@sneakygremlins scampi isn’t scampi unless it’s made with the tails of Dublin Bay Prawns, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried.

FaveNumberIs2 · 28/06/2018 18:11

‘Raw’ tomatoes? Do we have to call them raw?
Jeezealoo, what happened to fresh tomato, tinned tomatoes, and cooked tomatoes?

Raw implies it HAS to be cooked to be eaten.

MJLWG · 28/06/2018 18:27

It’s hilarious. #1stworldproblems 😂

derxa · 28/06/2018 18:36

Hilarious

Eric the Guinea pig.... thank goodness you said that.... I thought I was going MAD ... I simply and utterly couldn't believe what I read...
"she asked for prawn and tomato "skewers" .... ??????????
Surely this must be a joke "wind up" to see what people say??

user1483875094 · 28/06/2018 18:42

and "Delish" what does that mean? does it mean Delicious?
not totally sure? But this is a "brill" post for working out what really is going on here - genuinely think OP is posting for fun to find out what "Peops" really think !

PollyChockola · 28/06/2018 18:50

God this is so fucking tedious

EVERY single time anyone posts a thread on MN about feeding their kids something that isn’t potato smiles/jam sandwiches/beans and chips you get the following:

My kid asks for ham sandwiches Confused
Surely this is a joke!
I’ve seen everything now!
And I thought quavers were fancy...

Are prawns and fucking tomatoes somehow seen as the height of poshness now? Maybe the kid had skewers at home and liked them (like how kids often enjoy novelty with their food, receiving it on a stick is up there)?

So many bitter, jealous, reverse snobbery posters on this site. If prawns and tomatoes are your idea of an extravagant/adventurous or fancy meal for your child I bloody pity them.

My38274thNameChange · 28/06/2018 18:58

So to summarise the thread:

Prawn skewers may only be socially acceptable for a three year old if they are served for dinner and not in a packed lunch, made with lemongrass skewers or as a “spoony kebab”, with the cherry tomatoes cut specifically into quarters, and only if there are no children within a three mile radius who could have an allergy that nobody knows about?

And you’ve failed as a parent if your child hasn’t had shellfish by age 3 Grin

Wow, OP. I bet you’re glad you asked...

user1483875094 · 28/06/2018 19:00

The fact that you are now finally deciding to "not send in the skewers" due to massive advice on here, is bothering. Did you even think about it, before asking for advice? At one point you said you would "take off the pointy bits" ... that does not help one jot, there is still a long pointy stick that could have easily taken an eye out. Come on, "fess up" you posted this for fun, and to provoke an argument, "right"?

CheshireChat · 28/06/2018 19:08

Prawns are usually > £10/kg so hardly surprising some kids haven't tried them.

Mind, my son refused all food except for bread at nursery today...

Rebecca36 · 28/06/2018 19:20

Presumably the lunch boxes are kept in the fridge.

Apart from that, many kids are allergic to shellfish and crustaceans and small children will swap things or try bits and pieces from another's lunch. Trust me that does happen.

Not wise in my view, the cherry tomatoes are wonderful but get her to choose another filling.

kateandme · 28/06/2018 19:21

use spaghetti as skewers or a straw.
if your child wants prawns then its fine.
its not snobbery.prawn friend rice anyone...my Chinese place is definitely not posh!
please don't go with some answers on here and now not give your child a really nice lunch and great your dc is choosing prawns.its a great start to trying foods.
we are all moaning one day on thread about fussy children, they wont eat this or that. then cant give a kid a break when it likes prawns!
