To wonder if this is a fat girl problem

I've always been slightly bigger than most, not always overweight but even at my slimmest 12-14, as a pair shape I would still have a belly, wobbly thighs and fat upper arms whilst having twig legs and a decollege that made me look gaunt.

I'm current 15stone and have recently lost Stone by dieting. I did the Couch 2 5k programme in the hope that it would improve my fitnes but despite also losing the stone, walking the 7 minute walk to nursery has me hot and sweaty even in cooler weather. It was like this when I was thinner too but I presumed I was just unfit.

When I walk, I'm not out of breath, just hot and sweaty. I find it uncomfortable trying to suck my tummy in and walk so that I don't waddle and have my belly stuck out but that's difficult too. I go slow when I can but then see other women breeze around faster and flawlessly.

Losing weight and working on my fitness, will this change the discomfort or am I just made this way?! It's not just that I swear but I feel hot too. Today is a killer and I don't have any summery clothes that I feel comfortable in.

Swimming hides sweating!

MaMisled · 26/06/2018 14:06

Don't mean to sound smug......oh fuck it, yes I do.......I've lost 4.5 st and don't sweat!!!! I'm currently sunbathing for the first time in 20 years! No tits or tummy rolls for sweat to pool under and thighs don't touch. Im actually enjoying the sunshine! It's such a revelation! !!

bigsighall · 26/06/2018 14:11

The extra weight probably isn’t helping but I have a bmi of 19-20 usually and I sweat loads!!! I am always the beetroot in the exercise class. Weirdly I’m not a warm person, generally on the cold side but I’m still quite sweaty day to day (yeah beautiful I know!!)

PrincessCuntsuelaVaginaHammock · 26/06/2018 14:16

Ah OP, you're doing so well! Keep it up. I think some people are just sweatier than others, I reckon I am more sweaty than average, but it's still definitely worth the effort you're making.

juneau · 26/06/2018 14:17

I think some people sweat more than others, regardless of weight, but being overweight will definitely make it worse and this hot weather won't help. I'd focus on losing weight, if I were you as I know that being even half a stone heavier makes a difference to my fitness and ability to get around with ease. Every single pound you carry is weight that has to be lugged up the road with you, so every pound you lose is one less! Well done on the stone weight loss - but keep going - you'll find it easier to get around as the weight comes off.

DickTERFin · 26/06/2018 14:30

I've been a size 10 and a size 20 and have always been a puce faced sweater. It's like every pore on my body conspires to dehydrate me as quickly as possible the moment I begin to move.

In fact, I was very fit and lean in my late teens up until my late twenties and it made not a jot of difference. I think it's just genetic, my mum is the same. On the plus side, I have great skin and I think it is partly to do with my every perspired state.

springmachine · 26/06/2018 16:31

I was extra sweaty when my thyroid was playing up, but that was hyperthyroidism which would explain weight loss rather than gain.

When my thyroid is under active I struggle to keep warm.

(I go through phases of being under and over active)

I've also been diagnosed with PCOS. I don't have any actual symptoms of it such as hairy face but lack of periods and painful ovulation when it does happen is how mine appears.

I have been a size 8 at 8.5 stone and a size 18 at 15 stone and definitly sweat and waddle far more at a heavier weight.
I'm probably 11 stone now (a weight I seem to naturally get to when I stop dieting) and I can manage ok without excess sweat too much.

If you asked DP he would describe me as a sweaty person, but I think that's more to do with the odd time I get hormonal sweats and can soak the sheets.

Sounds dreamy doesn't it?

Wheretheresawill1 · 26/06/2018 18:52

I take 300mg of Venlafaxine and the sweats are horrific. Makes me very self conscious

GingerKitCat · 27/06/2018 12:14

Grr Mumsnet I just wrote the longest reply and lost it!

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 27/06/2018 12:18

@GingerKitCat if I ever write a long reply I'll type it out elsewhere first then copy and paste into MN. Been caught out before like you!

bananafish81 · 27/06/2018 12:25

I'm a slim 6-8 and I get a right old sweat on. Sweaty back, sweaty tits, sweaty face. I once had to get off the tube because I was literally dripping in sweat after the carriage had got stuck in a tunnel.

I do have PCOS but I think I just have shit temperature regulation. I get really really cold really easily - I have Raynaud's and will wear wooly jumpers and full PJs with a 13.5 tog duvet and heating on 20 overnight

Always being cold could be linked to being slim, but being a right old sweaty mess when I'm hot is I think just how I'm built!

iwishicouldbelikedavidwatts · 27/06/2018 12:39

i massively suck at temperature regulation - i don't think i sweat enough so just get really flushed, as soon as i tip over the too-hot point. the exact location of that point might vary depending on how much weight i'm carrying (anywhere between 7-15 stone), or how fit (from not leaving bed for weeks to running 50k+ a week) but the look of my face is the same.

the difference is that people judge you for it/find it amusing when you're fatter, but that holds for most things.

GingerKitCat · 27/06/2018 12:41

@ACatsNoHelpWithThat I usually do that but was in a hurry and thought I'd learnt my lesson! I pressed preview, read it over, pressed post and it disappeared gah!

The gist was that I'm being prescribed propantheline bromide by a consultant but it's not reliably effective. 3x a day on a completely empty stomach. Side effects are tricky - stomach pain, dizziness and insanely dry mouth/lips. So dry that your mouth sticks to itself when you talk! I'm upping water intake to mitigate but as soon as you swallow it's back to dry mouth! Comes and goes throughout the day.

My next appointment isn't until October. I believe there may be one, maybe two other drugs to try (one is ££££ and lilely not available on the NHS). Botox and iontophoresis aren't suitable due to the area of sweating. After that it's the end of the road I believe. Hyperhidrosis UK has been a good source of info.

My style of sweating is more flooding than creeping so there's little opportunity to stop it in its tracks. Dreading menopause as I don't think I could possibly sweat more and I don't want night sweats on top!

A lifetime of severe depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PCOS and more recently agoraphobia (what a fun mix!) have complicated matters but I'm feeling more empowered to fix my weight and fitness and be happier/possibly less sweaty! I hate making excuses for my weight, it's time to confront!

Will post more about home workouts/swimming/gym in another post as I don't want to type more and lose it!

iwishicouldbelikedavidwatts · 27/06/2018 12:41

eta: equally i feel the cold really badly. i've learned to dress very specifically for temps - layering, natural fabrics, etc.

top tip: am wafting around in loose/covered cotton/silk atm and fresh as a daisy for once. breeze/low humidity helps too.

lhastingsmua · 27/06/2018 12:43

I’m slim (size 6) and still get ridiculously hot. With and without makeup, my face can’t handle heat so I’ll quickly get a wick of sweat on my upper lip/nose/forehead with red cheeks in mild temperatures, which then evolves in full face shine and redness in hot weather. So it’s not necessarily caused by your weight.

I do have a tendency to power walk everywhere though which doesn’t help. If I walk home from work in this weather at 5-6pm, the heat is unbearable. I’ll have to take regular breaks and completely slow my pace down as this heat will give me a migraine. It’s only 20 minutes but it’s up a massive hill for the majority of the walk.

I’m finding it a bit difficult to dress right now too, as I leave my house at 7 when it’s cooler, and have to dress for work. So my outfit in the morning/for work isn’t necessarily weather appropriate when I finish work. So I’ll bring extra clothes.

Drinking loads of water really helps - hydration is key to decrease the rate at which you sweat. Sunglasses help block the sun directly on your cheeks too, which cools your face down. Also leaving your house earlier so you can walk slowly and not rush around.

GingerKitCat · 27/06/2018 12:44

@DickTERFin people often tell me I look young/ have good skin, maybe it's a positive side effect of the sweating!

Cathena · 27/06/2018 13:56

15 stone here (5’8, not sure how tall you are) and I don’t overly sweat. Can walk a long time/distance without any pain. I think it’s a person thing not a weight thing!

itsbetterthanabox · 27/06/2018 14:03

I'm much larger than you and I'm always cold! I freeze and want extra heating and blankets.
This weather is hot but I'm in aircon now and could do with a jumper lol.

somewhereovertherainbutt · 18/07/2018 13:53

I do wish people would realise that hyperhidrosis is a medical condition and weight really isn't a contributing factor. I've had this since the age of 13 and whatever weight I've been it's been the same. I can sweat enough to wet my hair in the depths of winter too.

I have the craniofacial version and it's seriously horrible. No hiding from it and I've even made up various cover stories for looking like I've just had a shower - e.g. despite only leaving work to buy a sandwich, by blaming a bird pooed on my head and I've had to rinse my hair in the sink!

morningperson · 18/07/2018 19:18

On the "sucking in the tummy" front, if i've gone to a nice doo wearing a fitted dress and i suck my tummy in, say after having a jolly nice (big!) meal (we've all been there haven't we ha ha) I get really bad trapped wind!! probs too much info but that's what i find anyway. As you were folks!
