To wonder if this is a fat girl problem

I've always been slightly bigger than most, not always overweight but even at my slimmest 12-14, as a pair shape I would still have a belly, wobbly thighs and fat upper arms whilst having twig legs and a decollege that made me look gaunt.

I'm current 15stone and have recently lost Stone by dieting. I did the Couch 2 5k programme in the hope that it would improve my fitnes but despite also losing the stone, walking the 7 minute walk to nursery has me hot and sweaty even in cooler weather. It was like this when I was thinner too but I presumed I was just unfit.

When I walk, I'm not out of breath, just hot and sweaty. I find it uncomfortable trying to suck my tummy in and walk so that I don't waddle and have my belly stuck out but that's difficult too. I go slow when I can but then see other women breeze around faster and flawlessly.

Losing weight and working on my fitness, will this change the discomfort or am I just made this way?! It's not just that I swear but I feel hot too. Today is a killer and I don't have any summery clothes that I feel comfortable in.

Well done for losing the stone but really 15st is still very overweight. Keep it up and you should feel the benefits a lot more, although some people do seem to have a higher body temp than others.

BounceAndClimb · 25/06/2018 11:30

My dad is the same so I have a feeling its more genetic than hormonal in my case.

BlueBug45 · 25/06/2018 11:31

I've always sweated loads since I was about 20 however fit I've been. Annoying in summer when marathon training and the sweat dries on your face as a salty crust. Some of my siblings and their children who do lots of exercise also sweat loads so it's genetic.

I had a brief discussion in one of my spinning classes as some people drip like me, others sweat and others don't sweat much at all but go bright red. The latter group find they have to be more careful about overheating.

As a PP said to get less wobbly do some weights or other resistance training. Also worth working on your core which includes your back muscles. Though you need to do a mixture of the different types of exercise to get a flatter stomach.

TheClitterati · 25/06/2018 11:32

I can get quite hot and sweaty in the mornings - it takes a while for my body temp to regulate itself after I wake up. I've been like this for as long as I can remember.

Rest of the day I'm much more "normal" temperature and sweat wise. I'm 16stone.

I do find joggling helps tremendously. Keep moving OP. And get yourself some clothing suitable for the weather.

Cliveybaby · 25/06/2018 11:33

swimming! nuff said

Between my sister and me I'm the heaviest but lost 72kg since last April- she sweats more than I do and I have PCOS.

I found spray deo makes me sweat more so I swapped to right guard mans stick and it seriously helps. Big chested here naturally and it's a family curse, Coolmax bra may help keep you cool!

Your doing right by c5k and walking- I'm 33 weeks pregnant and taking toddler to nursery kills me daily- us Scots can't handle this heat lol.

maddening · 25/06/2018 11:33

Whilst I am currently overweight i have never dealt with heat well, even as a not overweight child - I found a school book where I had written about my holiday to Anglesey and even then I was complaining about heat. Even when not overweight I get red and sweaty when exercising.

So it probably varies from person to person - similarly there are people who feel the cold more easily

MrsPreston11 · 25/06/2018 11:36

I was in the 15 stones at my heaviest, now a few stone lighter but could still stand to lose a bit more.

But honestly the difference to my comfort levels in hotter weather really does make the weight loss feel even more worth it.

Also noticed days I eat less I'm a lot cooler, I think because my body isn't getting hot from burning energy to digest. So hot days like today I stick to fruit and salad etc and that really helps too.

adaline · 25/06/2018 11:38

I genuinely think some people just sweat more than others.

My dad is a long-distance runner - him and all his running friends are ridiculously fit and trim. Some of them barely break a sweat after 20 miles, some of them are dripping on the starting line. None of them are overweight.

I'm quite a sweaty person (unfortunately - I hate it!) and I've never been overweight in my life. I took the dog to the beach this morning before it got too hot and I was sticky when I got home!

WellTidy · 25/06/2018 11:39

Sweating is good. Your body is cooling itself down.

I wish I could sweat. I know it sounds strange, but I barely sweat at all. It means that when I get hot, I just swell up loads and loads and go very red. I feel dizzy and faint and as if I am cooking. The only thing that helps is masses of cold drinks, sitting in the shade and (if things have gone too far) a cool bath.

I have never been able to sweat like other people, whether I've been a size 6 or a size 12, pregnant or not.

delilahbucket · 25/06/2018 11:42

I'm a lot less of a sweaty mess when thinner. It makes a huge difference to the regulation of body temperature.

Lightsong · 25/06/2018 11:44

Be careful with the sucking in of the tummy all the time, can cause problems

I really want to know what problems too, I'm worried as I do this ALL THE TIME!!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 25/06/2018 11:45

Many very fit people sweat a lot, but they don't look so read and ready to pass out. When you reach your weight goal, and are slim and toned, I promise you won't care.

You will also up your exercise as you go, so 7 minutes walk will not feel like exercise, and you won't sweat during that. Your body just needs to get used to it.

Xenia · 25/06/2018 11:46

You are doing really well and have lost a whole stone and you walk to work every day. Just keep it up. Most weight loss is food, not exercise so may be just stay inside today, keep cool and don't eat too much.

Sweating can be genetic. My mother and I hardly ever sweat much at all and I always saw it as a bad thing as we don't get cooled down by all that water on our skins (as we don't have much). Those who sweat can better regulate their temperature. I like to see women sweaty from exercise actually - much better than perfect make up frilly dresses fashion plate type women!

hipposarerad · 25/06/2018 11:51

Has anyone explained what problems are caused by tum sucking?

ellybo · 25/06/2018 11:52

Hi. I'm size 18 and practically never sweat or get out of breath while my friends do. It's just because I do hiking and they don't. It's sometimes funny that I'm so big compared to them and don't even break a sweat but it comes down to different lifestyles.

Even if you work out at a gym, you might not be working long-term those same muscles that you use while you walk or you don't have the stamina for strain. It's not the same walking outside or training muscle groups at a gym :) I'm used to walking 20 miles a day with heavy backpack .

SchrodingersCaterpillar · 25/06/2018 11:54

If the sweating really bothers you there are medications such as oxybutinin or Botox injections to paralyse the sweat glands.

Serendipite · 25/06/2018 11:56

Nope, I was 16 stones a few years ago at 5'8". Wasn't sweaty at all. I'm around 12.5 now, not sweaty.

Mousefunky · 25/06/2018 11:58

Well done for the weight loss OP.

The females in my family sweat from their heads. It’s seemingly genetic for us... my Mother, myself and two DD’s all break out in a sweat very easily. Not overweight, no health issues. I think most people have an excessively sweaty area of their bodies, I don’t tend to sweat from my feet for example. Just one of those things but of course carrying excess weight can make you sweat more as fat works as an insulator.

hmcAsWas · 25/06/2018 12:02

No they haven't hippo. I'm sceptical too

hmcAsWas · 25/06/2018 12:05

The thing with being overweight is - lets admit it - we tend to wear too much clothing in hot weather as camouflage (just me?), and we might suffer less in hot weather if we were thinner and wearing shorts and a vest top?

Blobby10 · 25/06/2018 12:07

Well done for trying to get fitter and leaner. Please dont worry about what you look like and/or what others think of you - I know its easier said than done!. At least you are doing something. it wont be a quick or easy fix but you will get there. Dont get fixated on certain body parts - of course you had a tummy when you were thinner - women are supposed to have one!! How else would we expand to give birth?

Start slow and keep going - add a little bit more of a challenge each week whether its walking or jogging to the fourth lamppost instead of the third, or doing that on 4 days instead of 3. Its the little achievements which add up.

MeMyShelfandIkea · 25/06/2018 12:08

I overheat and sweat and a lot, not from the usual suspects such as underarms and feet, but from my scalp/face and lower back. It's called hyperhidrosis and I didn't develop it until my mid 20s. Both my dad and brother had/have it too. I'm overweight at the moment but found it was no better when I was slim.

I find taking sage tablets every day helps a bit. I also spray an aluminum chloride based antiperspirant on my scalp for big events such as holidays, weddings or job interviews, stings like heck at first but lessens over time.

cakecakecheese · 25/06/2018 12:09

I lost a lot of weight and was as sweaty as I was before so I agree it's not just an overweight thing

Sucking in your stomach can reduce the amount of oxygen your body is getting leading to shallowness of breath.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/06/2018 12:15

My DS is only 7 and slim, when I pick him up from school, he always has dripping hair, compared to his classmates. (He now has a crew cut).

Well done on the weight loss. I would second doing weights. It raises your metabolism for 24 hours after, and increased muscle burns more fat. Will also help with toning in the long run, should you choose to lose more weight and will support your joints. Is also a good prevention against osteoporosis
