I feel like to do this I would have to really restrict myself food wise and keep to a strict gym regime. Any tips?

I’m 45
I’m size 10 but 5 11
I watch what I eat
I exercise at least 4 days a week
I don’t really drink

I used to be 13 stone
And I will never go back there,
I have made too many friends getting thin and active.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2018 23:08

Nana a size 10 isn’t a 38 bust, it’s around 34.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/06/2018 23:18

I'm a 10 and nearly 31. Never been above 12 which was when I was pregnant. I have always Been active or in jobs on my feet. Mainly running or weights and I don't eat excessively, always realise it I've gained a few lbs then reign it in. All the women in my family are slim to.

DownstairsMixUp · 24/06/2018 23:19

I don't have a sweet tooth either and my bad cravings are generally things like cheese

GorgonLondon · 24/06/2018 23:25

SGB Yes it's 'fine to be fat' if you're happy to massively increase your risk of many types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, alzheimers, arthritis, gout, gallbladder diseases, high blood pressure and breathing problems.

Personally I'm not.

Fireandflames666 · 24/06/2018 23:28

I'm in a 10/12 and I'm 31. I walk everyday, do squats, situps and also lift weights. I eat sensibly and don't eat tonnes of crap food. This works for me.

Serendipite · 24/06/2018 23:28

Agree GorgonLondon

All of us people who are size 8 and have been all our lives need to recognise that size 8 now is not what it was. I am a size 8, and sometimes a 6, in mainstream brands like Gap, Next, etc. I am much fatter than I was when I was a size 8 twenty years ago. It's not that I have not put on weight, but sizes are much larger than they were. I was a size 10 at 18 and considerably skinnier than I am today.

However, to the OP, I don't eat sweet stuff (not because I'm restricting myself, I just am not that interested). I don't snack much. I walk a lot. I try not to drive if I don't have to. I'm 49 and weigh about 8 stone. I eat everything that I like, I just don't eat extra stuff. Move more, eat less, is all you can do.

HRTFT. You can't. HTH

laurG · 24/06/2018 23:38

I walk at least 3 Miles a day. Easy because it’s the only way I can get to work. I eat a pretty regular and boring diet during the week and take my own lunch to work. I don’t snack. I go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week. I eat a biscuit every day so I don’t feel like I’m restricting myself and pretty much eat what I want at the weekend (within reason). If I know I’ve eaten more than usual I’ll cut back I’d do more exercise.

I’m pregnant at the moment but usually a size ten. I’m not super skinny by any extent but I used to be a 14. Lost this weight about 6 years ago and I’ve kept it off by following the above approach. Not that hat really.

PamsterWheel · 24/06/2018 23:58

What does 'a small appetite' actually mean though?

One slice of toast instead of two? An apple for lunch? Never finishing a meal?

What does it mean?

Ifonlyfor1day · 25/06/2018 00:04

I do not drive so I walk lots. I do not have a huge appetite and I enjoy healthy food. Mostly my 3 year old DS he like to run off I am always in pursuit Grin

EdWinchester · 25/06/2018 00:08

I was always effortlessly super slim until my 40s. I now have to work hard to stay thin and am about a stone over what I’d like, but still slim by most people’s standards.

I’m 5’8 and 10 stone 3. For context, I am only 3lbs lighter than when I was 9 months pregnant. I do loads of exercise and watch what I eat. I have to massively restrict carbs or I pork out.

Getting old sucks.

Ifonlyfor1day · 25/06/2018 00:08

Small appetite for me is rice crispies for breakfast, salad or sandwich for lunch, usually baked potatoes vegetarian sausage and vegetables, though I do eat lots of sweets.

I think it is metabolism too, My DSIS is vegan, she is very healthy, she would eat much less calories than me and she is a few stone heavier.

UrgentScurryfunge · 25/06/2018 00:18

Late 30s. Been a fairly consistent 8/10 since reaching adulthood (short, pear shape)
Being active, including regular cardio and strength exercise
Listening to my appetite, leaving the last couple of forkfulls if I'm happy, rarely eating until bloated. Trying to keep portion sizes sensible to my needs.
A varied diet, nothing to blog about, but a sensible middle ground without too much abstinence... however, I can't eat what I like without impunity. My digestive system can't handle too much alcohol, sugar, dairy or soya.
I notice that seasons of excess such as Christmas are begining to stack up these days, the mince pies will still be on my waist long after new year if I'm not careful. I have to be more mindful about my habits to adjust it back after.

I'm not sure how I fall with genes. My bone structure is small to medium which with my lack of height shows any surplus pounds very easily which is why I regularly monitor and tweak where necessary. I've never been "on a diet" but I have evaluated my lifestyle and made subtle adjustments to maintain a fairly narrow zone. Most of my relatives have been gaining weight be my age and been overweight by 40, so for me it's a sensible lifestyle over genes. I accept that the challenge will increase as I get older (I do like my food!), but hopefully exercise and keeping my muscle tone up (and therefore calorie usage) will help to mitigate that

I think a lot of it is down to genetics and luck, well in my case anyway. I had 2 children in an18 month period, was back to a size 8 within a week or so both times. I'm pretty sure I should be much fatter even if I am still breastfeeding. I'm nearly 35, so maybe my luck will run out soon 🤔?

AnxiousPeg · 25/06/2018 06:34

I'm missing the point a bit, but I simply don't believe anyone who says they're a size 4, sorry!

I'm a 10, so I know a 10 isn't properly slim like it used to be.

But my thinnest friend, with not an ounce of fat on her, anywhere, is still an 8. I can just about see how someone with a significantly smaller frame could be a 6.

But 4 ? Nah. It's a made up size, I'm sure!

Tobythecat · 25/06/2018 07:17

Most depressing thread I've ever read. I'd rather be fat and happy, and have a bit of pizza and cake once a week, thanks.

Iamblossom · 25/06/2018 07:19

I really restrict myself food wise and stick to a rigid gym routine

HelenaJustina · 25/06/2018 07:31

At 30 I’d finished having my DC so my weight hasn’t fluctuated since, but it’s mostly diet and exercise I’m afraid. It definitely gets tougher as you get older! And it’s 80% diet...
I’m a size 10 and 5ft7.

Ikeameatballs · 25/06/2018 07:33

I think the poster who said that long-term weight maintenance is easier than having lost the weight and then sticking at it is right.

I’m about to turn 40 and weigh just under 8 stone. I’ve never been heavier than this outside of pregnancy and even then I gained weight moderately and lost it quickly. I really believe that this is my “ideal” weight in the sense that it’s been static for pretty much my whole adult life.

I’m vegetarian and eat fairly carefully. I stood in the queue at Costa last week and eyed up all of the cakes, they looked great, but for me not great enough to waste 500 calories on. Eat that every day and you’d gain a pound a week. Now I’m not perfect, my birthday means I’ll eat drink and be merry but the reality is that can’t happen every day and still be slim.

bananafish81 · 25/06/2018 07:39

Genetic luck and a small appetite (36 and size 6-8). My mum was the same - she was a size 8 in her 50s and 60s

Don't restrict or watch what I eat, my issue is actually the opposite - I will genuinely forget to eat if I don't consciously make myself eat 3 meals a day. If left to my own devices to follow my natural appetite I'd happily graze all day. I thought I had a super fast metabolism but turned out when I needed to put on weight to start IVF aged 33, that tracking with MFP showed I just massively overestimated how much I was eating. When I started forcing myself to eat shitloads to get 2000 cals a day, I did manage to put weight on, but it was a conscious effort and I found forcing food down when I wasn't hungry a struggle

When I'm stressed the weight falls off - I lost half a stone in 2 weeks after my first miscarriage.

Kickassbitch · 25/06/2018 07:40

I'm 43, had my kids at 32 and 34. I was always a 6/8, now an 8. Ive always been active and liked my food, but metabolism slows with age unfortunatley! I have to eat less than I used to to maintain my size as just being active isn't enough now and quite a bit less to, strange thing is though I'm not hungry for eating less I just don't need as much food! I can guarantee if I continued eating the way I did I would easily go up 2/3 dress sizes which is quite a lot for me given my small frame and would feel uncomfortable and constantly full/stuffed.
