I feel like to do this I would have to really restrict myself food wise and keep to a strict gym regime. Any tips?

Age 50 here, post menopause, and I still only gain weight when I over eat. Being an emotional eater doesn’t help but I have half a handle on that.

Less calories and more activity seems to be the magic formula.

BexleyRae · 24/06/2018 22:13

38 and size 8, its pure luck and genetics for me, I'm small built and have a small appetite, but can happily graze all day and have a big sweet tooth.
I fully expect to wake up on my 40th with a massive arse

AutoFilled · 24/06/2018 22:13

Don’t need to have children young. I had mine at 35 and 39. As I said upthread, I was down to under prepregnancy weight both times. And I also left the hospital both times in prepregnany clothes, not maternity stuff. The only thing that took a couple of months to fit back in were skinny jeans.

RedForFilth · 24/06/2018 22:14

I can only eat one meal a day to maintain my size 10 figure. I do eat fruit as well. I'm 28. If I go out for a meal (rare) I have to fast the next day.

pangolina · 24/06/2018 22:14

38 and size 6/8. Watch what you eat, exercise and generally keep active, drink loads of water and get enough sleep.

Grenoble124 · 24/06/2018 22:15

Weightwatchers and discipline. Plus breastfeeding. Yes I have to think about it all the time. Bread and butter are my downfall. I have days off but feel better being good. I try to get plenty of exercise. Am almost 40 and 6 / 8, having gained half a stone becauseIl I got too thin.

Fairylea · 24/06/2018 22:16

Can I just add I think a lot of people don’t realise that exercise to lose weight isn’t just a plod round the park with a dog or a slow 10k steps over a day. Yes those things are great and help overall fitness but if you really want to improve cardiovascular health and shed some pounds it really needs to be faster, harder and more intense exercise.

I appreciate not everyone is capable of doing high intensity stuff, health problems etc or disabilities can make it impossible. But if you can and want to lose weight it’s definitely worth giving it a go.

I have Addison’s dIsease, thyroid problems, anaemia and pituitary problems. Exercise was really so hard for me in the beginning, I really felt like giving up at first but I stuck with it and am so glad I did.

There are TONS of free fitness videos on you tube to get anyone started.

ElinorCadwaller · 24/06/2018 22:16

Only eat meals, no snacks and no sweets. Mostly plants, not too much. This is no hardship, it suits my appetite. Sweets rarely but without angst.

Reasonable level of exercise-walk, cycle-nothing too dramatic.

Have the right genes

eightfacesofthemoon · 24/06/2018 22:17

I’m 45 a size 6 and eat what I want. Never really excersize and love a choccy biccy
Dunno what your problem is op. Try harder?

GorgonLondon · 24/06/2018 22:21

snarted I'm approaching 40, size 8-10, 5 ft 8, and I'm afraid I do have to do what you say in your OP - restrictive diet and gym everyday.

Some people have naturally tiny appetites or have never gained weight - that's not me, unfortunately, so I really do have to work hard at it.

For me it's worth it.

Mawalls · 24/06/2018 22:21

crack

Serendipite · 24/06/2018 22:21

If I eat like a "normal" person, I'd be back to 16 stones.

I eat healthily, I don't eat junk, I restrict my caloric intake and it seems the lowest I can go to is 12 stones at almost 5'8".

Over the holidays, I ballooned up to 14.6 stones without really eating junk food, fairly low carb, etc.

I'm one of those unlucky ones I guess.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2018 22:21

I’m 52 and going through the menoupause. I’ve never been more than a size 12 but usually a 10.
2 years ago I was the heaviest I’ve ever been so started just not eating any rubbish. No snacking, other than fruit. Get out and walk briskly everyday.
The weight dropped off me and I’m now a steady 8 -10.

GorgonLondon · 24/06/2018 22:22

I should add that i LOVE my alcohol - so without the food restriction and the hardcore exercise, I would be very fat very quickly Grin Sad [not sure what emoji belongs here tbh] [sips brandy]

Biologifemini · 24/06/2018 22:24

I am quite active but don’t exercise
Agree breastfeeding made me lose weight fast
Just eat normal foods but not massive portions and I only drink water and wine. Nothing fizzy.
We eat salad with every meal.
Also whenever I have put on weight I accept I have to feel properly hungry a bit during the day in order to lose the weight.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2018 22:24

I should add that doing My Fitness Pal, educated me so much. I’m only 5ft 2 so my recommended calories per day is only about 1550. That was a bit of a shocker but I just watched portion size and eat healthily. As I said no snacking othe than fruit.

ShesABelter · 24/06/2018 22:25

Exercising doesn't make you lose weight calorie deficit does. If you work out your tdee and eat under that (track everything on my fitness pal) you will lose weight. If you want the same as your tdee you will maintain, eat over and you will gain. It's that simple.

GorgonLondon · 24/06/2018 22:27

Exercising doesn't make you lose weight calorie deficit does.

Well obviously exercise helps you create a calorie deficit Hmm

I agree that weight loss is far more about diet than exercise, but hard, proper exercise definitely helps.

With my alcohol intake, it's only intense exercise that counteracts that.

Serendipite · 24/06/2018 22:29

Yup, can't outrun a bad diet.

TheNoseyProject · 24/06/2018 22:29

I think part of this is never having been bigger - I’ll explain.

I was fine in my first pregnancy until the last 8 weeks when I ate and ate and ate. I was huge after the birth. Prior to being pregnant I’d never dieted or struggled with my weight. But afterwards! Terrible! I lost most of it but the last 10lbs will not come off and it goes back on so easily.

Honestly, if I could go back in time I wouldn’t eat like I did (I gorged! I ate so much - all my own fault) as I think now my body has all those extra fat cells it is harder to keep the weight off.

Useless observation I know, but if you’ve never been anything but a 6/8/10 I think it’s easier to maintain than if you’ve been larger than that and slimmed down to that size.

puffyisgood · 24/06/2018 22:30

eat next to no sweet stuff.

DeputyBrennan · 24/06/2018 22:30

31 here, 5'9", size 8 (9 stones) - no children, which I imagine makes a huge difference.

I was treated for anorexia/bulimia from age 15-23/4 (ish), during which time I calorie-counted obsessively, so I do feel on some level that I am always quite aware of the calories I'm consuming. I'm not in any way suggesting that anybody does what I do, but since you're asking, I eat approximately 1000-1400 calories for 4-5 days per week, and then I eat absolutely anything I want during the other days. I really do binge (5000+ calories per day), and it isn't good.

I eat almost entirely plant-based food, though much of it isn't 'healthy', and I do spend a couple of hours each day walking my dog.

romany4 · 24/06/2018 22:30

I'm very lucky with genetics and a fast metabolism.
I am also very active, eat loads of veg and drink a lot of water.
I'm 46 and have been bang on 8st since I was 18. Doesn't matter what I eat, never put an ounce on. But I lose weight very easily if I'm ill.
Only time I was heavier was when I was pregnant at 21 and 24. But I lose my pregnancy weight quickly through breastfeeding and walking with my pram every day

Fairylea · 24/06/2018 22:31

Exercise burns calories. Of course if you exercise more and don’t eat more you will lose weight. If I didn’t exercise my weight would keep creeping up unless I reduced my food intake to such a level my life wasn’t enjoyable. Enjoying food is a massive part of my life.

Notcontent · 24/06/2018 22:31

I am mid 40s and have always been the same weight, which is a size 6/8 - although 20 years that was a size 10!

I don’t really exercise but I am always busy and I do walk a lot. However, I think the main thing is just not to eat rubbish on a regular basis. And don’t eat for two when pregnant - this may sound harsh but a lot of woman use pregnancy as an excuse to binge eat.
