Is it reasonable to start mowing your massive lawn at 8pm?

With your very loud petrol lawnmower?

Perfect time for grass cutting, early enough to fit in before most folk go to bed. Won’t disturb nightshift workers either.

Lindah1 · 24/06/2018 21:29

Sounds a bit late to me OP especially if I knew there were young children locally

OkMaybeNot · 24/06/2018 21:31

I'm sending you a box of grips on the next Ryanair flight

Alright, I'm not about to punch him in the throat! It was just drowning out my Netflix documentary about the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

And I couldn't be bothered to close the window.

ElQuinto that's rather early, don't you think Wink

I'll never forget the flameno festival we went that had barely started at 3 am.

That said, many people are desperate to relax the law so it isn’t universally popular

I'm not surprised. I like to get going early with hiking, beach etc at the weekend so I can get there and get a parking space before everyone else, and relax in the garden when I get back.

Shopping and grass cutting is done in the evening in the week after work so the shops not being open and not being allowed to mow after 8 pm would be a major inconvenience.

GinUser · 24/06/2018 21:38

Just to dispel a few myths about Germany.
Shops - yes they are closed on Sundays, but if you live near a large station or an airport you can usually find shops open for "travellers' requirements".
However, during the week shops are generally open from 09:30 or !0:00 to 19:00 or 20:00 (including Saturdays).
Lawn mowing often takes place on Saturday mornings or afternoons.
There hasn't been a "Mittagsruhe" for many years, but it used to be until 15:00, if memory serves me correctly.
As people generally tend to start work earlier than UK, they also finish earlier, so a lot of activities, such as gardening, take place in the early evening in summer.
When Germany is playing football (as yesterday) you can hear a pin drop (in the middle of Frankfurt).
Some areas ban hanging washing up outside on Sundays, too.
No bonfires or car washing permitted on domestic premises either.

steff13 · 24/06/2018 21:42

Here they tell you on the news not to cut your grass until after 6pm. Something to do with the emissions.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2018 21:49

How do they cope with the weather in Germany then, or does it not rain very much?

In the UK grass cutting is a careful balancing act of appropriate weather, being arsed, having space in the garden waste bin, having time and other stuff too. For much of the year, the grass is too wet to do it in the morning for example.

And I don't see how hanging washing out affects anyone else. If it's dry on Sunday, I have time and there's washing to do, it's getting hung out.

FrauNeuer · 24/06/2018 22:20

I don’t remember any restrictions with hanging the washing, but I grew up in the countryside so maybe it would be different in apartment blocks. Saturday was the designated day for that stuff anyway.

That’s a really good point about the rain! I remember hot summers during my childhood and certainly not as much rain as here, but in the north i think the rainfall is comparable to that of the UK.

FrauNeuer · 24/06/2018 22:24

I should also add that my Mum stayed at home, as did most mothers, so I guess that helped! Things are rather different now. Smile

specialsubject · 24/06/2018 22:27

lawn does not need water. if it goes brown it will recover.

other types of unwatered plants die. use resources wisely.

i.e. dont be the fuckwit with the sprinkler!

Ilovemypantry · 24/06/2018 22:44

AnneProtheroe
began at 9am and finished at 9pm

Really?? 12 hours to mow the lawn? How many hectares do you have?

Semster · 24/06/2018 23:01

My lawn gets mowed when
a) 13yo DS is here to do it
b) neighbour's ride on lawnmower is actually working
c) it's not currently raining
d) it's recently rained (we have a problem with toxic caterpillar hairs which will cause massive allergic reactions if you mow when it's too dry)
e) the stars are perfectly aligned

It might be at 8pm. It might be 7am. Round here everyone else will be doing something involving power tools and noise at those times anyway.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 24/06/2018 23:03

Well my dickhead neighbour has just lit his chiminea. It bloody stinks and it's too hot to close the windows. DH is thinking about getting out of bed and spraying the hosepipe over the fence

happymummy12345 · 24/06/2018 23:48

Could be worse. You could have the people on our street who literally scream/ shout at/ yell at their children all the time: "name, get the insert swear word in/ down/ here now you little insert swear word and an insulting name/ term. The child is 5 at most.

Whereismumhiding2 · 25/06/2018 00:08

Why is this even an issue? Of course it's ok for NDN to mow his/ her lawn at 8pm.
You are UK? This is well within local bylaws.

Yabu.
(I really want to say 'get a grip' but that just sounds rude, so I won't say it ! ....But I will.think it.... Hmm)

LauderSyme · 25/06/2018 00:18

I'm with you OP although I see ours is the minority view.

Very loud petrol lawnmowers do not sound nice.

Raven88 · 25/06/2018 00:19

Yes. As long as it's finished before 10.

FrauNeuer · 25/06/2018 01:34

Raven88 you’re joking, right? 10pm! My nerves would be broken. This thread is actually making me grateful that all I have to worry about on my street is occasional noisy kids.

I would like a quiet neighbourhood scheme where like-minded considerate people could coexist.

Kursk · 25/06/2018 02:47

Round these parts, any time during daylight hours I would class as acceptable.

Monty27 · 25/06/2018 03:12

It's the optimum time to mow a lawn. In sunlight the short grass would burn.
I need to burn garden refuse in the next few days. Thankfully my neighbours will be understanding. And I am in inner London.

moira123io · 25/06/2018 03:14

Absolutely not. Call the police.

Seriously?
It's 8pm not 2am. I'm sure there are things you do that annoy your neighbours too. Chill out.

Monty27 · 25/06/2018 03:17

GrinI exactly.
OP what time of the day would suit you?

NotARegularPenguin · 25/06/2018 06:59

Someone in my village apparantly decided to do a load of strimming or hedge cutting at 1:30 am. Village fb group is in uproar. I slept through. But that’s bad!

thecatsarecrazy · 25/06/2018 07:21

My neighbors have young children so i don't cut the grass at that time. I was vacuuming my car on Friday night just before 8 and felt bad about that.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 25/06/2018 08:43

notaregularpenguin bet it was a frustrated nightshift worker proving a point. I’ve felt like it a few times Grin
