Is it reasonable to start mowing your massive lawn at 8pm?

With your very loud petrol lawnmower?

Our neighbour has just started on his lawn.......complete with music cranked up loud so he can hear it over the ridiculously noisy lawn mower

LillianGish · 24/06/2018 20:55

Move to Germany - lawn mowing is banned on a Sunday altogether (and on bank holidays and between the hours of 12 and 2pm therefore quite possibly after 8pm as well).

summercat · 24/06/2018 20:55

@OKMaybeNot

If it is a VERRRRRY loud petrol mower, then surely it would be annoying anytime?!

Would you prefer he did it at 6pm (with the noise and petrol fumes,) when you're having your evening meal? Or at 3pm-5pm when you're out in the garden sunbathing, or at lunchtime when you're eating, or during the England football match?

Personally, I think I would prefer it at 8pm. I can hear 4 or 5 people mowing right now - mostly petrol mowers as many houses round here have large gardens/huge lawns...... Not bothering me in the slightest. In fact as someone said, it's the sound of summer, and is a lovely sound!!! Grin

And why not a Sunday? Not everyone works Monday to Friday 9-5, and has the weekend off. Many people work weekends, and also weird/late/early shifts. My DH does nights - 10pm-7am.

Shall I say to all my neighbours that they can't mow their lawn, or do anything in the garden, or have any music playing, or have their kids playing out (on the 4 days in a row he is in work,) til after he gets up at 3.30pm?! Confused

StaplesCorner · 24/06/2018 20:58

Oh yes - Germany - I've read about that; apparently if you make ANY noise they send someone round and make vague threats. Brilliant.

Susikettu · 24/06/2018 20:59

Yes its unreasonable. It's a Sunday. I'll be in bed in 10mims ready for my early Monday start. Not how I would want to unwind.

summercat · 24/06/2018 21:00

@specialsubject

don't water the lawn!!!

Why? Confused

Jellylover · 24/06/2018 21:01

Our neighbours started their arsenal of garden machinery at 7.30am this morning. Mum on the lawnmower, dad on the electric moss remover and oldest son with the patio cleaner. Looked like a b and q advert. Grin

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2018 21:05

How are people in Germany supposed to Get Things Done?

You're not allowed to mow the lawn on Sunday, but you don't have time to do it on Saturday because you have to go to the shops then, because they're not open in the evenings or on Sundays.

I bet an untidy lawn isn't allowed either Confused.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2018 21:06

^don't water the lawn!!!

Why^

Because if you water the lawn, it grows and needs cutting. If you don't water it, you have to cut it less. Win win the grass will survive Smile.

OkMaybeNot · 24/06/2018 21:15

It's summer OP and the world doesn't revolve around you.

Oh Sad

OP posts:
LillianGish · 24/06/2018 21:16

Barbara I struggled, but threads like this make me understand why they had rules like that Grin.

OkMaybeNot · 24/06/2018 21:17

My lawn is tiny. It takes about five minutes to mow. Not that I'd know, I'm a lazy shit natural gardener who lets her grass grow above the standard 1.5 inches as stipulated in the Neighbourhood Watch handbook.

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 24/06/2018 21:18

Ours doesn’t survive- it’s all brown and yellow. Looks ugly.

echt · 24/06/2018 21:19

Arf at the sound of petrol mowers being the sound of the summer; only the click and whirr of a push reel mower is permissible. Heard through a Pimms-induced haze.Smile

Where I am in Australia, the state law says all machinery of that kind can't be used after 8.00. p.m. so Things Still Get Done, and in heat routinely over 30 in the summer.

summercat · 24/06/2018 21:20

I agree that the rules they have in Germany would never work here, because too many people work so many different days and hours.

Because if you water the lawn, it grows and needs cutting. If you don't water it, you have to cut it less. Win win the grass will survive smile.

Ah ha! Grin Having to do ours at the mo though, as we put grass seed down a week ago. Smile

OkMaybeNot · 24/06/2018 21:21

Australia agrees with me!

That's nice for you, ours takes about an hour. Not a stealth boast, we live in one of those ex council houses with a massive garden and two lawns front and back and it needs strimming round the edge too. The grass clippings fill a large wheelie bin and that's if it's been kept up with.

FrauNeuer · 24/06/2018 21:23

barbaraofseville honestly, it works! Lawns are mowed, apartments are vacuumed, generally speaking, on Saturday mornings which leaves more than enough time to do the shopping. Sundays are nice and quiet and people generally rub along together a whole lot better because everyone knows the rules.

That said, many people are desperate to relax the law so it isn’t universally popular!

OP, I’m with you. Your neighbours are being selfish. I made a post on here a while back about inconsiderate neighbors with kids and was also told by some to ‘move to the country’. Some people simply don’t care about the impact that noise can have on people.

Botanicbaby · 24/06/2018 21:25

YANBU OP 8pm is way too late.

OkMaybeNot · 24/06/2018 21:25

Gosh if only we could all be as wonderful and tolerant as you Holymountain,

SilverySurfer · 24/06/2018 21:25

It's totally reasonable - it's not the middle of the night is it?

I don't let dh

Really? How old is he? 12?

AnneProtheroe · 24/06/2018 21:26

Next door has just started mowing his lawn.

TBH he mows so often I'm surprised he hasn't got bare earth!

elQuintoConyo · 24/06/2018 21:28

Couldn't give a shiney shit.

We are in Spain. It was Catalunya's equivalent of Bonfire Night last night. We were out at 9.30 this evening (cos it's dark) letting off the rest of our rockets. We weren't alone.

Honestly, i dread the day i have to migrate back to the UK, everything seems like such a ballache: children having fun, man mowing lawn, Aldi cashier rushing the shopping too fast, playground cliques, lunchbox police... I can barely breathe!

It's a guy mowing his chuffing lawn. I'm sending you a box of grips on the next Ryanair flight Hmm

Ours takes all day. OH began yesterday at 9 and finished at 9 last night. We do have a lot of grass though. :)
