I'm sure I'm too young to have so many aches and pains when I first get up in the morning! I'm 28 years old and always wake up with terrible lower back pains, achey ankles and really sore joints in my fingers from where (I think) I lay on my hands in the night. It all wears off after a while, but am I slowly falling apart or is this normal?!

I get a really bad lower back ache if my core muscles are losing strength. When I'm doing semi-regular yoga or bodyweight exercises, no aches and pains. I'm 42.

Timefortea99 · 23/06/2018 15:52

53 - no aches at all.

PalePinkSwan · 23/06/2018 15:55

Recently saw a rheumatologist and as part of the assessment he asked if I’m achy in the mornings as that’s indicative of some auto-immune diseases.

Not normal. Go see your Gp.

bluetongue · 23/06/2018 15:57

Sometimes I wake with an achey hip on whichever side I’ve been sleeping on. My mattress needs replacing so I think thete’s a few spots without enough padding over the springs.

Unsureneighbour · 23/06/2018 15:57

Have you been pregnant or are you breastfeeding? I have terrible aching joints for the months I'm breastfeeding but it does go away when I stop. It's so bad I'm usually hobbling around in the morning and when getting up from sitting down or being in the car etc.

MissusGeneHunt · 23/06/2018 16:39

Another one here with psoriatic arthritis... V v painful when i wake up, but my consultant is fabulous and really trying to help. Am on increasing levels of meds including self injections but I'm hopeful for a good outcome. Exercise really helps me later in the day, but I do feel for you OP.... Those mornings are freaking horrible! Go and see your doctor when you can.

LanguidLobster · 23/06/2018 16:42

Very occasionally if I've slept funny (stiff neck/back) and wears off quickly.

Look into all angles OP

Eighttimeseight · 23/06/2018 16:43

Ensure you take vitamin d. And I also think glucosamine supplements are very good for general aches.

Bramble71 · 23/06/2018 16:45

I'm in my late 40s, riddled with arthritis and have Fibromyalgia. I go to bed in pain & wake up in even more pain usually; aching everywhere, stiff joints, swollen hands and feet. Ugh. I feel like I'm in my late 140s.

Catinabeanbag · 23/06/2018 16:46

I had pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips in the mornings for about 6 months before I went to the GP. They did bloods and hip / pelvis xrays. It's arthritis - I was 40 when I was diagnosed.

Definitely worth getting it checked out, especially if it loosens up over the day.

TuTru · 23/06/2018 16:47

I actually feel like I’ve died when I wake up the morning. Nobody believes me tho.

dingit · 23/06/2018 16:49

I kept waking up with lower back ache, then I worked out it was because I was positioned carefully round the cat 🙄

Roomba · 23/06/2018 17:01

My back and hips often hurt like hell when I get up, but I've had PGP/lower back issues for years. I probably need a new mattress too, but no way that's happening for a long time yet due to cost! It's worse when I've been exhausted the night before - I then fall asleep so deeply that I don't move much in my sleep. I seize up completely then and it takes ages to get out of bed! Been like this since the age of 29. Not looking forward to being 80...

whoopsiedaisies · 23/06/2018 21:16

Yes I'm currently breastfeeding a heavy 8mo!

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try and get an appointment with my doctor!

Unsureneighbour · 23/06/2018 22:59

Ah, it's a breastfeeding thing then. Once you stop feeding it should go away. It was definitely worse with my first but I have it with my second DC as well. Google it and you'll see that some others do experience it but it's just random so not really well known or talked about.

LockedOutOfMN · 23/06/2018 23:08

I have plantar fascitis in my left foot and that hurts like hell when I wake up, some days worse than others.

The rest of me is fine and dandy though no matter how tired I am in my head or how little sleep I've had for one reason or another. I do a fair bit of sport and exercise, often in the evenings, and I believe that my 'regime' keeps me free of aches and pains. Friends on my basketball team will often wake up feeling awful on the second or third day of one of our tournaments but I seem to be really lucky. I put it down to:

  1. I stretch well before and after exercise.
  2. I stay well hydrated.
  3. I eat a small amount of protein as soon as possible after exercising - typically a handful of unsalted cashews or a small tin/portion of tuna or a few slices of cooked chicken breast if we have that in th fridge.
  4. I take cold/cool showers. I think this is the most important one. I get in to lukewarm water then gradually reduce the temperature (to cool not cold). Then before getting out I take the shower head off of the stand and direct cold water at my calves, thighs, bum, lower back, shoulders and upper arms. If I've exercised a lot then I repeat the final step after a quick 'break' with lukewarm water to warm up the rest of me.
(5. Also eat plenty of different coloured fruit and vegetables - in my mind this keeps muscles and joints healthy?)

However genetics are bound to play a part - neither of my parents is particularly 'achy' either or has ever complained of that type of pain on a day to day basis.

For the OP as others have said breastfeeding is at least partly to blame for you at the moment. Take care.

condepetie · 23/06/2018 23:15

My ankles, man! I'm 29 and fat and have a connective tissue disorder, but my fucking ankles are the only parts of me that regularly hurt every morning.

It's the achilles tendon and I think it's partly because I sleep on my front or side, so my feet end up pointed all night long. It's painful in the morning and wears off before I leave the house in 30 minutes or so.

I have flat feet too so the balls of my feet hurt at the end of a day on my feet, but more supportive shoes would probably help that.

I get random joint pain - the other day it was my right elbow for the first time ever, occasionally my hips ache - but only rarely.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/06/2018 23:23
  1. Two broken legs, 4 arthroscopies, innumerable dropped motorbikes, crushed and broken fingers etc. Oddly, no back problems given the heavy lifting at work. 50mg of tramadol sorts it out when the weather's bad.
liz70 · 23/06/2018 23:29

47, post menopause (44, thank you, Mother Nature Hmm), chiefly my legs, and particularly so in damp weather. Right ankle even more so since trimalleolar fracture and ORIF 10 years ago, with a lateral screw working its way loose and trying to poke out of my skin. Hmm Appointment with podiatrist next month. Oh joy.

Candyflip · 23/06/2018 23:35

Early 40s and absolutely no aches since low carbing and dramatically reducing my alcohol intake.

silver1977 · 23/06/2018 23:37

excitedforbaby2 sorry to hear you've been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, my dad has this and I was just wondering about the weekly injection you say you have, my dad was diagnosed at 21 and is now 70, he hasn't had a check-up/review about his condition in a while and just wondered if you knew if this was a new treatment that's become available?

OP definitely get your vitamin d levels checked, I felt like this and was convinced I had arthritis or something as it runs in the family a bit, however it turned out I needed high strength prescription vitamin d and it seems to have helped. Hope you feel better soon.

LockedOutOfMN · 23/06/2018 23:56

Interesting, Candyflip. I'm a very, very occasional and light drinker, maybe this is also a factor in reducing aches and pains.

DramaAlpaca · 24/06/2018 00:04

I'm 54 & used to wake up with stiff, achey fingers. Since I started eating low carb a few weeks ago that's all stopped. I'm sure it's not a coincidence.

legolimb · 24/06/2018 00:06

I'm 50 and don't ache as much as I would expect for my age.

I do a lot of exercise and I think that helps. Any aches and pains are usually from overdoing the gym and running.

DH is a similar age and he clicks and cracks all the way down the stairs in the mornings.Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 24/06/2018 00:11

I'm almost 62, but I don't usually wake up achey
unless I've either tried a new gym class,
or I'm away from home and sleeping on a less good mattress

Invest in the best mattress and topper you can
It's worth it
