Would it be cruel to stop buying my dad fags

My dad is currently in hospital, he is being discharged ( I do have another thread going) but would really appreciate some opinions on this. Dad has dementia and a heavy smoker. Due to his smoking it is making almost impossible to find a home that will accommodate him smoking in the garden. The only way he can get Ciggs is if I buy them ( with his money). My DP thinks we should stop buying him and so making him a non smoker. I think this would be very distressing for Dad but equally I do know people seem to have problem with smokers. I don't know what do for the best

I don't think you've got a choice OP. If nowhere will take him because of his smoking, and he can't go home either, he'll have to stop. It would be distressing for him, but the homes quite rightly argue it's a health and safety issue - not for him; for the staff and residents in the home. Certainly if he's going to have a sneaky fag in his room, and possibly burn holes in the bedding, it's a no no. (Unless you want to have him at your house?)

My dad is in a care home and there's a smoking shelter in the garden outside the dining room and cigarette bins in the gardens. Residents with high levels of confusion aren't allowed to keep matches and lighters with them but the carers take them outside and light the cigarettes for them. So these homes do exist

That being said there are very few smokers there as the on-site amenities shop doesn't sell cigarettes and relatives won't always bring them so people do stop smoking/forget they smoked

Single smoking in his room would not be an option as his smokes would be locked up. Also many people seem to think there are homes that would accommodate his smoking. Despite what his SW is saying Living with me is not an option as I do not have a spare room. Also I work from home. He needs specialist help.
