WIBU to take a doll to the barbers?

Trying to get a sense-check if this is bonkers before I do it and look like a fool. DS1 is four at the end of July, and for the last couple of months has kept asking for his birthday if he can have a ‘toy DS1’. His little friend has a doll that looks just like her which I think has given him the idea. However, I’m struggling to find a boy doll that isn’t a baby, and the couple I have found are expensive and don’t have the right hair and eye colours. I’m starting to wonder about buying a girl doll with the right colouring, and taking it for a haircut. I’d do it myself but I’m pretty sure I’d make a terrible mess of it. If I explained to a barber, do you think they’d give a doll a short back and sides?

Lottie dolls have a boy called Finn. Extra outfits available too!
Affordable at well under £20 from most suppliers.

How about one of these? They do boy dolls, aren’t ridiculously priced and a bit more ‘wholesome’ than Barbie etc. uk.lottie.com/collections/dolls

Sorry if I've missed it, but what colour skin, eyes, hair and hairstyle are you looking for?

perfectstorm · 23/06/2018 18:31

Kidz n Cats dolls are really nice, and they do several boys, but they are heinously expensive - I got my girl one second hand from Ebay, or she wouldn't ever have had one. It's not practical as a new present, but maybe work on having a watch list on Ebay, in case one does come up?

There's a specialist doll's shop with a page dedicated to boy dolls specifically, so you can get an idea of what one you might like, and then run a search. I got my child's for £35 which is a lot but it's beautifully made, dressed and has 6 fully working joints so she can stand, sit, lie etc. - really lovely faces, too. And new you can add £100 to that.

My dolls were really important to me as a child. I wasn't a happy one, and they meant a lot to me. I think it's a good way to give a child some sort of comfort toy to love, if they like the idea. I hope you find a perfect one for your son, and/or a nice hairdresser who understands.

Well you are just way ahead of your time, American girl dolls all the rage in the states (of course) , are made as near to their new owners image and can be booked in for a haircut and also have a seat reserved at the restaurant were they are served actual food. Watch this space it will all be here soon !!!,

Anyone suggested Kidz n Cats dolls yet? There elbows and knees bend so they are fully piseable and there is a dark haired version. Google Alistair

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 23/06/2018 18:34

Poseable not pissable!

Starlyte · 23/06/2018 18:38

Yeah, I was just going to say the same! With all this phobia about giving boys girl dolls, they must have boy dolls out. There was Ken, Barbie's guy, but I heard some where that she got rid of him. Little kids aren't as discerning as us, I'm sure a Tshirt and jean like DC's would do a perfect job! Good luck ;)
Although if you did take a girl doll to the barbers you might get in the local paper... or H.P. lol

Moaningmeadowlark · 23/06/2018 19:26

There's loads of boy dolls out there aren't there? I haven't rtft though so someone else may have said this.

This place might have just what you are looking for.

They have a nice selection of dolls in various skin colours/ hair colours/ eye colours. They also do a selection of doll that have Down’s syndrome (which might be useful for someone who is looking for such a doll). Price wise not super expensive as most are between the £20-£30 mark.

SuspiciouslyMinded · 23/06/2018 20:10

Seriously, it sounds like you need a Tree Change Doll, styled like a boy, although it might need a different body. If anyone can pull off a boy haircut for a doll, it’s this lady www.treechangedolls.com.au

cherish123 · 23/06/2018 21:30

They would do it but they would also think you are crazy.

Deidre21 · 23/06/2018 21:33

Hairdresser would do it.
They do start practice on doll type hair at hair dressing school.
You could possibly go on a day when some salons have students working experience for less- an option unless they’re too inexperienced in your opinion.
I think it’s a lovely idea to do this for your child it’ll be one of the memories you can look back on and he might be able to pass the doll on to his child one day.

Sorry, OP, but this thread has made me laugh..especially the bit about your husband giving you the side-eye even you mentioned it Grin

bobdylannumber1 · 23/06/2018 23:45

Our generation are doing a boy doll I saw it in the toy shop last month the girl in the shop said boys love jeeps ice cream truck etc so they brought out a boy doll

Knittingsavesme · 24/06/2018 08:30

Here is my Tiny Tears doll from the late 1960s, along with her ‘brother’ Timmy doll, so boy dolls not new. I gave them to my kids in the 1990s and knitted my kids’ school uniforms for them. They were like mini-mesGrin. I used Patons or Sirdar doll knitting patterns (still available) and did them in the school colours. Kids, boy and girl, loved them. I loved those dolls but they’re pretty ugly looking at them now!

I don’t see any problem in wanting to get your DS something he wants for his birthday. I’m less good on knowing how to achieve it, but it looks like there’s lots of suggestions here.

When DS (now 14) was 6 he went on his first Beaver camp. His bear went to and he liked to stroke the bear’s tail when he went to sleep. He wondered if there were sleeping bags for bears but they’d need a hole in for his tail.
So I knitted one with the necessary hole. And a pillow Smile. Indulgent but a nice thing to do.

angelfacecuti75 · 25/06/2018 02:50

Maybe just get him a ken doll & see if you can find one with similar hair ? Or make a rag doll if you're good at sewing ?

CatOwned · 25/06/2018 03:12

Wait, since when female dolls have a crease? Granted it was a long time ago since I last played with dolls, but mine had little dots in the place of knickers?

Santa sat at my kitchen table on Christmas Eve and gave an Our Generation doll a haircut so that it looked like my dd . Dolls that look like their owners are very in just now and I can totally see the appeal for a child. The American Girl ones are horribly expensive hence Santa's DIY job. I can recommend the Our Generation dolls but agree with the pp who suggested that it might be difficult to cut a short style due to the pattern in which long doll hair is rooted. But a doll makeover person may be able to reroot the hair to achieve the right look.

And sheesh, what's the deal with some of the pp's? One of parenthood's great pleasures is going the extra mile to create something really special for your child - bear sleeping bags with holes for the tail, lookalike dolls with homemade lookalike outfits, these are little bits of magic in childhood. Go for it OP!

KatyN · 25/06/2018 06:50

Can’t face reading all the comments, but my two both have dolls that look like them. They are rag dolls that I made.
I quite like to cuddle them when the children are in bed!

Maybe ask his mate’s mum where she got hers?

Candyflip · 25/06/2018 07:43

knittingsavesme those school uniforms are ridiculously cute. I didn’t even know tiny tears had a brother, and why did he have a real name but she didn’t....?

Leapfrog44 · 25/06/2018 09:40

I'd totally take the doll to a barber. Obviously when you're also paying for a haircut though. Just keep a poker straight face and ask him or her to cut the dolls hair. They'll do it.
