WIBU to take a doll to the barbers?

Trying to get a sense-check if this is bonkers before I do it and look like a fool. DS1 is four at the end of July, and for the last couple of months has kept asking for his birthday if he can have a ‘toy DS1’. His little friend has a doll that looks just like her which I think has given him the idea. However, I’m struggling to find a boy doll that isn’t a baby, and the couple I have found are expensive and don’t have the right hair and eye colours. I’m starting to wonder about buying a girl doll with the right colouring, and taking it for a haircut. I’d do it myself but I’m pretty sure I’d make a terrible mess of it. If I explained to a barber, do you think they’d give a doll a short back and sides?

Another boy doll on amazon but £50

LadyDeadpool · 19/06/2018 23:10

Hair dye won't work on a doll, but if you contacted a OOAK doll face up artist on etsy they could probably do it. I do it but I work in small scale on Monster high dolls and I'm still learning but some of the people out there are amazing. It would need all it's hair removing and rerooting to change the colour and styling dolls hair is completely different from human hair as it's made with plastics.

The first picture is one of my dolls the second is pulled off google images just to show you how people can do it.

Well, I'm thinking of my haircutter, and if you asked him for advice he'd play it with a straight bat, telling you what style is possible for that sort of (admittedly very challenged) hair and he'd be honest if a minime haircut wasn't possible. He'd probably suggest some kind of compromise that might suit both.

But my haircutter is rather unusual, and he's great with children.

TBH though, I'm intrigued why you're so invested in indulging DS here. Are you perhaps trying to avoid conflict in other areas?

Worriedaboutdog · 19/06/2018 23:20

bluescreen what do you mean? Not being snarky but I don’t understand - there isn’t any conflict? He’s a lovely, kind, well-behaved little boy and I’m trying to get him what he wants for his birthday. He doesn’t often get new toys due to budget and space constraints, so birthday presents are a big excitement. I can guarantee he won’t kick off if he doesn’t get it - he’ll be happy with whatever we get him. But if I can do this and make him happy (without spending an extortionate amount) then why not?

If it helps the only other thing he’s asked for is a real aeroplane that can fly, and I haven’t tried to indulge that one...

I don’t get why people think this is weird, or that the op is trying to indulge her ds?
My dd has an American girl truly me doll that looks just like her, she wanted one for years and we bought her it a couple of christmasses ago. It’s a bit of a ‘thing’ these days with dolls that look like their ‘owners’ and I really don’t see the big deal not to allow a child something for their birthday? Ok, taking it to the hairdressers is nuts but not finding a doll that ds wants is.

So many companies do boy dolls now

our generation boy doll

AG boy doll with dark hair and eyes

Mysibling do lovely 18” boy dolls and not very expensive either, but they’re in the US and not 100% sure they ship to uk.

The Lottie Finn doll looks very strange!

Have you checked eBay?

bluescreen · 19/06/2018 23:33

Sorry, worried. I think I must have misunderstood. Apologies. But please have a word with the hairdresser well in advance and see what s/he says - don't spring it on them. They might even be able to suggest the best model.

PippaPug · 20/06/2018 00:03

You can get people to bring things over from America - like personal shoppers (or holiday makers!) to save on the shopping costs of a doll? Could you see if anyone on your fb is going to America any time soon?

siwel123 · 20/06/2018 00:14

If you're willing to splash out you could get a reborn doll I guess?

Homemadearmy · 20/06/2018 00:40

Have you tried ebay

Yanbu. A friend and I spent hours curling a dolls hair for dd for Xmas to look like an American girl doll but way way cheaper.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2018 00:55

Depending on how rough he'll be, could you look at a China doll?

If you buy a girl doll and cut her hair, well he change her clothes and freak that "HE" doesn't have a penis?

PositivelyPERF · 20/06/2018 01:03

f you buy a girl doll and cut her hair, well he change her clothes and freak that "HE" doesn't have a penis? OMG! That hadn’t even occurred to me! 😂

hellokittymania · 20/06/2018 01:06

Hi, I'm only half joking when I ask have you heard of the Luk thep in Thailand? I bet if you found somebody in the tie community in the UK, somebody would be able to get Ñuwân, if you really wanted to do this. I'm not sure I would take adult to get a haircut in the UK, but if you did it in Thailand, I don't think anybody would blink an eye. Just don't try and book a ticket for it on the plane ! Yes, there was an actual request for people not to book plane tickets for their goals. Dolls. Sorry using dictation. Anyway, they even had menus in restaurants for them.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2018 01:09

What's on the doll menu?

hellokittymania · 20/06/2018 01:10

I'm trying to find a link for them, but if anybody has watched Jack Whitehall travels with my father when they were in Thailand, Jack had one. I think you lost it on the train in Cambodia. But that's what I'm talking about. I looked on Etsy, and I think you may be able to find them on there.

asprinklingofsugar · 20/06/2018 01:29

What about a dolls hospital? I'm not sure if they do haircuts but when I was little one of my doll's eyes went upside down and got stuck so we took her to one in Edinburgh and they fixed it. I've no idea if they do haircuts though, or what their prices are like. I've also no idea where else (other than Edinburgh) dolls or teddy hospitals etc are located but it might be something worth looking into

Patienceisvirtuous · 20/06/2018 05:28

That amazon one looks spot on. Finn is terrifying.
Loving this thread!

Copperbonnet · 20/06/2018 05:49

American Girl dolls are extortionate.

However Our Generation dolls are much more reasonable.

Here in the US Walmart do line called My Life dolls which are lovely dolls but very reasonably priced. They have a range of boy dolls and boy clothes too.

Doobigetta · 20/06/2018 06:15

That could be opening such a can of worms.... Shock

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 20/06/2018 06:18

I don’t get how the OP is “indulging” her DS?! Or how this is weird?

There’s so many threads where the OP is asking for help to find a toy they their DC desperately wants, with posters going completely out of their way to help and posts where the OPs dc has lost a comfort toy so everyone moves heaven and earth to find a replacement. How is this any different?!

BlitheringIdiots · 20/06/2018 06:26

Do dolls have sex organs?

Pigletpoglet · 20/06/2018 06:43

We had a doll made for my niece, who has very distinctive colouring. The lady who did ours is no longer making them, but if you look on Etsy for Waldorf Dolls you should be able to find someone who custom makes. Not cheap though! And look quite different to plastic dolls.

Canshopwillshop · 20/06/2018 08:02

Aftereights91, Loopylou and cant remember who kindly told me to ODFOD (took me a while - didn’t realise there was an actual acronym for it - thanks for that!) I meant the whole taking the doll to barbers for special haircut and treating it like it’s a ‘toy DS1’. Yes, buy him a doll if course but it doesn’t need to look like him in my opinion. My DS loved playing mums and dads with my DD and had dolls and pushchairs.
