At my 20 week scan. Sonographer said everything looks fine. Took a scan photo for another member of staff to look at. They want to get a photo of the nuchal fold again as they had some concerns. Want me to come back in 30 mins (12:45) - I've thrown up I am so anxious. Not sure what I need but if you could help me pass the next 30-45 mins a little quicker I would be hugely appreciative of that.

Thinking of you OP x

NC505 · 18/06/2018 13:18

Thanks everyone. Haven't read your responses yet. Baby has something wrong with its bowel. Echogenic bowel I think? Really worried. She told a bit of a fib when she said she wanted to check the nuchal fold again, as she actually saw something in the stomach and the bowel was too bright. It's a marker for downs and a few other things. Have to see a consultant but nothing available today which is pretty excruciating. Sat here shaking. I'm so worried about my little one.

Very sorry to hear it - how soon will you be able to see the consultant?

NC505 · 18/06/2018 13:23

hard I have no idea. Not today apparently :(

Emma198 · 18/06/2018 13:25

Was the something in the stomach something else? Echogenic bowel on its own doesn't have to mean anything sinister. Did you have any bleeding in early pregnancy?

Orchidflower1 · 18/06/2018 13:26

So sorry to hear you’ve had upsetting news op. Are you ok to drive? Could you have a juice/ tea to settle you before you go home? Hope you’ll see consultant soon- it’s a shame it couldn’t be today as more waiting for you. Could you get someone to come with you for next appointment? Sending you 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐

Isabella1978 · 18/06/2018 13:26

First hugs and Thanks.
Second, they can get things wrong. Last year I was scanned every week because they said baby wasn't growing and/or was really small, plus I had other major med issues.
Was scanned a week before c section (planned as I had broken hip) and they said baby only weighed about 4lbs, I was terrified stressed etc. Consultant ended pulling a very healthy 7lb 14oz little girl.
I am not trying to take away from your worry, but this isn't an exact science, different sonographers see different things (only one got my baby's weight right but her result was dismissed as an anomaly!).
Try to stay calm, and try to put to back of mind as best you can until you speak to consultant.
Wishing you all the best.

MadisonAvenue · 18/06/2018 13:27

Really sorry to hear that, I hope you'll be seen very soon.

Witchend · 18/06/2018 13:28

Hi,
Exactly that same thing happened to me with dd2. She's missing her left arm from below the elbow.

Give yourself time, and ask all the questions you want, but also ask for a phone be number or email where you can ask further questions when you think of them later.
(((Hugs))) for you and the baby.

TooManyPaws · 18/06/2018 13:28

I've just googled and a US medical professional site says that it can be a normal variant/isolated finding in up to 70% of cases, and can be caused by the baby swallowing blood from intra-amniotic haemorrhage.

It may be just an isolated incident rather than a definite. Hugs. ❤️

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2018 13:29

Really sorry to see you've had worrying news. I hope it transpires to be nothing sinister.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 18/06/2018 13:30

Huge hugs op, hopefully they’ll be able to get you a consultant appointment ASAP x

Primulas · 18/06/2018 13:34

We had this with DS2, who had a blockage in his bowel picked up later than your baby at a routine growth scan. We had an amnio to see if it was caused by a chromosomal disorder, but it turned out to be just one of those things. He had to have an operation when he was born, but he's now a perfectly happy and healthy 1yo. I remember well how scary it all was - hope you get some answers soon, OP.

NC505 · 18/06/2018 13:41

@Emma198 just had a tiny bit of bleeding very very early on. It wasn't much. They saw something in the stomach and when they rescanned half an hour later it had filtered in to the bowel. They're worried about cystic fibrosis. Re scanning in a week and taking blood from me and DP. How I'm going to get through this next week I don't know.

OP posts:
Emma198 · 18/06/2018 13:45

I've heard it can be caused my baby swallowing blood. Easier said than done but try not to worry too much, you need to look after yourself. Keeping everything crossed for you x

memaymamo · 18/06/2018 13:54

You poor thing :( My DD had an echogenic focus on the heart, and I found it quite a worry. She was fine in the end but it's so stressful.

user1471543239 · 18/06/2018 13:57

I had an abnormal finding at my 20 week scan a few weeks ago. Had to wait a little while for paediatric cardiologist and fetal medicine consultant and the scans were emotionally excruciating as they took 40 minutes each and you waited on pins for the results at the end - however all much better than first expected and not the dire prediction I got straight after the scan from a doctor ( who said your baby may not be compatible with life but I don’t really know as I have never seen this before!) - whilst the waiting is agony it is better to see someone who actually knows something rather than my awful experience of seeing a registrar who had no idea! Fetal medicine have been totally fabulous and I can’t commend them highly enough. Google really isn’t your friend at the moment- be kind to yourself. The first thing the fetal cardiologist said to me was congratulations on your baby- it was such a change from the doom and gloom and made me remember that this is still something to be positive about despite the stress! Take care and feel free to message me if I can help at all. I really do understand that horrible feeling when they spit something wrong on scan

Frenchiemamax · 18/06/2018 13:59

Sending you lots of love OP ❤️

NC505 · 18/06/2018 14:06

Thanks everyone. How the bloody hell am I going to get through the rest of this week?

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 18/06/2018 14:08

My DD had this.

Brightness of the bowel.

It can be a marker for a few things.
Me and DP had to be tested for Cystic Fibrosis (you both have to be carriers and even then it's a 1 in 4 chance of baby having CF. So a 3 in 4 chance baby won't)

They also said it could have been an old bleed or a marker of infection so they tested me for a few things.

I had a few extra scans with Fetal Medicine Unit between 20-28w and then a standard growth scan at 36w [my hospital used to give 3 scans to everyone]

DD came a day after her due date, quick and natural delivery and she was absolutely 100% fit and healthy. She was tested for CF via the heel prick test when she was 5 days old.... heel prick test happens to all babies and they are all checked for CF. We knew she didn't have it though as me and DP were given all clear as carriers.

DD is now 3 and she is and always has been healthy and NT.

I don't mean to minimise how scary this must be for you OP. I was terrified but it is something that usually turns out to be "one of those things"

You'll get a lot of extra care and attention as well.

Frenchiemamax · 18/06/2018 14:08

Just one day/hour at a time I suppose! Much easier said than done, but we’re here any time of day or night if you need to chat x

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2018 14:12

We're all here to help you through OP

NC505 · 18/06/2018 14:19

Thanks everyone. Wish baby would stop kicking me. I've got the worst case scenario in the back of my head and just want to entirely forget I'm pregnant for the next week...

OP posts:
Frenchiemamax · 18/06/2018 14:28

Ive just had a read about echogenic bowel and apparently 95% of the time it’s just down to baby swallowing some blood, totally harmless. Really hoping this is the case for you!

sachabloom · 18/06/2018 14:28

@NC505 I'm sorry I don't know a lot about this at all, I just wanted to say I'm thinking of you and I hope this week goes quick for you ❤️
