AIBU to think about those things?

There's loads of astronomers who think similar, the fact that we are moving closer to the sun doesn't change that. What makes you think God intends this world to go on forever.

junedaze · 18/06/2018 18:30

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christians_in_science_and_technology
There's a few "real astronomers" in that lot Jasmina I should imagine, who clearly will believe the same.

IppyDippyTippy · 18/06/2018 18:33

I've been a Christian all my life, 'till now in my late 40s, I've come to the conclusion that, quite frankly my dear, God doesn't give a damn. About any of us. I doubt He cares enough about us to even shake His head.

So no, I don't count myself as a Christian any more. After all the years of believing, hoping and praying, I now waste my time on other things.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/06/2018 18:41

Goodness me, do grown adults still believe in God? I haven't come across anyone who has for many years.

junedaze · 18/06/2018 18:55

What a strange comment cant cope, that it should amaze you so.
By the same token it amazes me how many people get to adulthood and be so closed minded and dismissive.

Mousefunky · 18/06/2018 19:01

For believing in him, perhaps.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/06/2018 19:06

Closed minded? The opposite, surely?

Ellisandra · 18/06/2018 19:10

I’m an atheist, raised Christian though.

If God existed, I think it’s fair to say he’s not that bothered about how humans are - his MO is to drown all but a chosen few when his SIMS game doesn’t go how he wants.

Sure we’ve had plenty of natural disasters... but nothing on the scale of the Flood.

In fact, I see it very much as a SIMS game - just abandoned. You can talk about free will all you like, no God that care about the humans he created would watch the events of Rwanda, Cambodia, Stalin’s Russia, Hitler’s Germany, Britain’s slave trade, Mao’s starving millions - etc etc etc etc etc ad infinitum continue.

A small Jewish baby, ripped from its mother’s arms, and smashed against a wall to kill it, for fun, by a German officer.

There are hundreds of sparrows, thousands, millions and God loves everyone and god loves me.

Just he doesn’t love that tiny baby. Her her mother. Or TENS OF MILLIONS of other people.

junedaze · 18/06/2018 19:23

ippydippy genuine question, but what made you think God doesn't give s dsmn about us, it's my belief that he loves us, so much he allowed his son to die on the cross for us. I think we have to be realistic about what God wants from us and what we should expect from him.

I Idon't think we've been put on this earth for a utopian existence, I think we're here to learn, God doesn't always answer our prayers if that is not what he wants from us. God isn't human so we shouldn't set our standards of what we want from him with a human viewpoint itms.

IppyDippyTippy · 18/06/2018 20:26

@junedaze - It's 45+ years of believing in Him, praying etc etc, just for life to kick me in the teeth over and over and over and over again. My life (and many others') hasn't exactly been a bed of roses and I've had to fight tooth and nail for every scrap of anything I've ever had. Even my DC almost died, abusive relationships, homelessness, you name it.

So after a lifetime of believing in Him and working my arse off, I'm almost 50 and I have fuck all to call my own. I'm now faced with homelessness again for the third time in as many years with two young DC. Honestly, if I thought prayers would help then I'd keep saying them, but experience has taught me that prayer does fuck all. God doesn't care about us 'little people'.

IppyDippyTippy · 18/06/2018 20:28

I actually agree with @Ellisandra - it's like we're a game God plays with when he wants, and only his favourite characters win, and when he gets bored he just abandons the game. The select few go through life full of smiles and the rest of us are just there as dispensable 'extras'.

Rainydaydog · 18/06/2018 20:32

My dd told me the other day that God is vicious but fabulous.

BananaToffo · 18/06/2018 21:05

There is nothing - precisely NOTHING - closed minded about demanding evidence for an extraordinary claim and withholding judgement until you get it.

That is what a rational mind does. Anything else is irrational, by defintion.

If I told you that fairies lived in my garden and spelled out messages in dandelions on my lawn everyday...would you just believe it? Would you not ask for some evidence? What if I couldn't provide any and just fed you a load of excuses, or expected you to take my word for it? Would you be "closed minded" to disbelieve? No, you'd be sensible.

Show us some evidence and we'll change our minds instantly.

And no astronomer worthy of the name thinks some supernatural force is holding the earth in place. And I am embarrassed that any adult, literate enough to post on a forum, is so scientifically ignorant that they actually think this is a credible idea. Did you sleep through your science lessons at school? Or were you too busy telepathically communing with Jesus?

junedaze · 18/06/2018 21:22

Banana I think you're wrong. It is very closed minded to deny something just because you don't get scientific proof. There is far more than what we are capable of knowing and seeing. To refuse to give the benefit of the doubt about Gods existence is incredibly naive.

Regarding science lessons at school, well what exactly did you learn that I didn't.....an explanation into what caused the Big Bang? As far as science goes it's acknowledged that we only know 5% anout the universe. Perhaps you slept through that bit?

junedaze · 18/06/2018 21:24

Please don't be embarrassed on my behalf, be embarrassed for yourself.

junedaze · 18/06/2018 21:27

I presume you're embarrassed for all the millions of Christians across the world too.

BananaToffo · 18/06/2018 21:43

*Junedaze

I am denying nothing. I am asking for evidence.

Answer the question about the fairies, please.

No, I will not give your personal belief system the "benefit of the doubt". Why on earth should I? Believing in something when there is no good evidence supporting it is the very definition of closed minded. I am not closed minded.

What exactly did I learn that you didn't? How gravity works, evidently.

The Big Bang? What Big Bang? Oh, the one discovered by SCIENTISTS? The same scientists that would tell you that there's nothing supernatural holding the earth in place? That Big Bang?

As far as science goes it's acknowledged that we only know 5% about the universe

Actually, we don't know how much we don't know, But whatever the statistic, that in no way justifies believing whatever you want to believe & then having the nerve to call people "closed minded" for not going alone with it. Either you are an intelligent, rational human being using reason & evidence to understand reality or you are not.

ICantCopeAnymore · 18/06/2018 21:45

I'm really embarrassed for anyone over the age of 10 who believes in a deity. It's just astounding.

BananaToffo · 18/06/2018 21:45

You are not representative of most Christians, by the way. Very few believe the tripe you've posted today.

Jasmina456 · 18/06/2018 21:46

Obviously there's no good God. The very idea of a good God is an oxymoron and a logical inpossibility.

junedaze · 18/06/2018 22:02

Banana The evidence is all around you, if you choose to ignore all the beauty of the world and the orderliness of our solar system that's up to you.

Yes the Big Bang discovered by scientists, the same scientists that are clueless as to what caused the Big Bang.

You need a far bigger leap of faith to believe that our existence and all the intricacies of nature are purely by chance. Our universe has no need to be so orderly, how naive to unquestionably take all that for granted.
