to be shocked by the video “Living on £1 for a day” by Aflie Deyes *title edited by MNHQ*

There is, according to my son, a trend on YouTube where some content creators live on £1 a day in order to discuss issues surrounding poverty with their viewers. Most handle it well and discuss their privilege and how to donate to food banks.

Alfie Deyes (Zoella’s boyfriend), who has millions of subscribers and millions of pounds in the bank, has made a similar video but throughout it moans that he has to drink tap water, laughs endlessly at the situation including holding a £1coin like it is dog shit, blags free food using his celebrity, uses a personal trainer and then spends a small fortune on jewellery and clothes.

My son used to watch this guy and his group of friends but had realised what a waste of space he is (and I’m glad he came to that conclusion on his own). He watched the video because from the title alone he knew just how Deyes would handle it and he did not disappoint.

I struggle with how a man in his mid-twenties with such influence over so many people (many of whom will be from families who struggle financially) can be so removed from reality and yet make his fortune off the back of them.

@rosesandflowers1 Zoella put out an advent calendar for £50 that contained 12 things that were barely even worth £1.

Then when people criticised it Zoella claimed to have worked on it for a whole year :-/

I third, or possibly fourth by now, Jaack Maate's take on it all. It's quite sad, how far removed Alfie and Zoella are from real life.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 18/06/2018 18:37

The Jaack Maate video is a great rundown of the situation. I wonder how much backlash he got from pre-teen Alfie fans for that?

She is also, apparently, rather heavily featuring lots of work and product meetings in her daily vlog. A deliberate ploy.

Should add these meetings in her vlogs have happened since the huge Advent Calendar scandal.

I wonder how she back peddled from her book scandal?

I cannot understand why anyone watches any of these so called 'influencers' once upon a time those who made YouTube videos were for the most part truthful and sincere. Now with all the money that's involved it's become a group of vacuous individuals who come across so incredibly entitled. People such as Zoella, Alfie, Tanya Burr her oh Jim and that Louise wotsit. Completely out of touch and a lot of young people watch these and think this is normal.

I don't think it'll be too much longer before people hit a YT peak and grow tired of it all and thankfully it'll be just a distant memory.

Rich people playing at being poor will never get it because its just a game to them. Roughing it and making do is only fun and quaint when you know you can stop whenever you want.

This. I remember at uni my rather well off flat mates complaining about how broke they were because they could only go out once a week. Meanwhile I was working any crappy minimum wage job I could get to pay the rent and eat.

natesbabie · 19/06/2018 12:10

he should watch 'London Hacks' £1 for a day videos - tons of really useful info, sensitive approach and tons of research.

traciebanbanjo · 19/06/2018 14:41

This guy is a bellend. And acts like a particularly stupid preteen.

Most of the industry are avoiding working with him, zoella, Tanya burr as gleam Futures sell them as having millions of followers but actually they are mostly bots or dead accounts.

Tanya burrs husband is known as the worst value infuencer as less than 1% of his subscribers actually watch him anymore but gleam still try to sell him as having millions of loyal fansHmm

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 20/06/2018 15:14

Are they still with Gleam? Does Gleam still exist in the same format it did a few years ago?

Your shocked people do Dickish things for views

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 20/06/2018 15:24

Yes I am, especially when it involves mocking people living below the breadline.

circlesquarecirclesquare Gleam still exists but Alfie and Zoe have taken some of the Gleam staff and set up 'A to Z' to manage themselves.

I had never heard of him before this - I've only got a young DS who isn't old enough to watch that kind of stuff. I hate this YouTube influence culture nowadays. I won't allow any of it on in my house.
