to be shocked by the video “Living on £1 for a day” by Aflie Deyes *title edited by MNHQ*

There is, according to my son, a trend on YouTube where some content creators live on £1 a day in order to discuss issues surrounding poverty with their viewers. Most handle it well and discuss their privilege and how to donate to food banks.

Alfie Deyes (Zoella’s boyfriend), who has millions of subscribers and millions of pounds in the bank, has made a similar video but throughout it moans that he has to drink tap water, laughs endlessly at the situation including holding a £1coin like it is dog shit, blags free food using his celebrity, uses a personal trainer and then spends a small fortune on jewellery and clothes.

My son used to watch this guy and his group of friends but had realised what a waste of space he is (and I’m glad he came to that conclusion on his own). He watched the video because from the title alone he knew just how Deyes would handle it and he did not disappoint.

I struggle with how a man in his mid-twenties with such influence over so many people (many of whom will be from families who struggle financially) can be so removed from reality and yet make his fortune off the back of them.

It’s just ridiculous, he has aboustly no shame.
IHaveBrilloHair · 18/06/2018 15:34

Oh he's a fucking dick, as is his girlfriend
My Dd is 16 and even she can see it.

Raven88 · 18/06/2018 15:36

I'm not shocked it seems pretty on brand for Zalfie.

mmmgoats · 18/06/2018 15:37

I'm quite surprised he's done all that, the backlash must have really worried him!

Am I being mean to HOPE this is the beginning of the end for these types of 'influencers'? I mean, the idea that this guy is influencing anyone is quite frankly terrifying.

Raven88 · 18/06/2018 15:38

He is taking the video down and here's a link to his response to the criticism.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 18/06/2018 15:39

I almost wish he had kept that video up actually because it shows him for exactly who he is. The more and more children and teens who realise what he is like, the better.

He has no idea how many people are going to food banks, are sending their children to school hungry, are staying in hospitals longer so they can be fed or not heat their homes.

Video is now unavailable so presumably his PR team have kicked in to gear

mmmgoats · 18/06/2018 15:45

I'm just amazed he genuinely seems to think it was a good idea to film and post the video in the first place.
Alfie Deyes really does seem to be the epitome of the phrase 'all the gear and no idea'.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 18/06/2018 15:49

The “apology” video seems like desperate bullshit. My son (13) watched it with me and he said the use of the word “fucking” seemed a constant and deliberate attempt to seem “real”. Out of the mouths of babes. Wink

Alfie once complained that the local press had posted their address in a newspaper article and it was an invasion of their privacy - so he tweeted a pic of the article to his followers to show it.

His local paper has 10000 readers. He gave his address to his 6 million followers plus the rest of Twitter.

The guy's not bright

Nicknacky · 18/06/2018 16:03

That Jaack Maate makes me laugh. I like him.

Loonoon · 18/06/2018 16:08

This is awful. He complains about the expense of living in Brighton instead of Thailand or Prague seemingly completely unaware of the huge levels of poverty and homelessness in Brighton. Does he walk the streets blindfolded?

mmmgoats · 18/06/2018 16:11

@onlymakebelieve I did laugh at that.
My niece has also told me there are parody twitter accounts for expensive items that Alfie has purchased, lost interest in and abandoned in their garden to rot - like a tent and some of of inflatable pool?
She also said he keeps repeatedly buying new massive inflatable pools for the garden and it's 'hilarious'.
I despair.

I’m reminded of the tale of Narcissis whenever I see this kind of out of touch clap-trap.

MsFrizzle · 18/06/2018 16:26

Mike Jeavons did a good one where he basically went through the whole week going "This is nice. We just had to put a lot more effort into making the food and getting good deals."

LighthouseSouth · 18/06/2018 16:34

"The guy's not bright"

aren't they doing all this on purpose though? Clearly it makes money.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 18/06/2018 16:35

He’s deleting all the negative comments on the “apology” video so it’s just 4K comments of people swooning over him and how wonderful he is and how the haterz don’t know the real him

He’s fucking thick as shit and a cunt along with it

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 18/06/2018 17:10

Imagine having such a platform and being so very ignorant. Imagine how he could charge up young people to volunteer or make real societal change.
I’m not saying that should be his entire job, he is clearly very successful being a massive narcissist (“I film these videos for you guys” sure) with his brand of video but to foster such an environment for young people is sickening.

Jaxk Monroe’s response was ace ....

rosesandflowers1 · 18/06/2018 17:24

I've never been able to deal with either of them. They're awful.

What happened with the advent calendar?

rosesandflowers1 · 18/06/2018 17:25

He has took the video down now, donating the proceeds to charity and has put up an apology

At least something good came out of it.

WittyJack · 18/06/2018 17:27

This is why everyone of every age from cradle to grave should adhere to this:

STOP MAKING STUPID PEOPLE FAMOUS!

CremeBrulee · 18/06/2018 17:32

The cynic in me thinks that their 'brand' has rather gone off the boil since the naff advent calendar hoo-ha and that this was all just a big publicity stunt. Bet their numbers of views skyrocketed from people clinking in links to see the video after all the press attention.

adoggymama · 18/06/2018 17:35

He kinda feels to me like the 'Logan/Jake Paul' of the UK😂 just slightly less regularly offensive.

StormTreader · 18/06/2018 17:39

"Rent a flat above a shop,
Cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
Pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night,
Watching roaches climb the wall,
If you called your Dad he could stop it all."

Rich people playing at being poor will never get it because its just a game to them. Roughing it and making do is only fun and quaint when you know you can stop whenever you want.
