to be shocked by the video “Living on £1 for a day” by Aflie Deyes *title edited by MNHQ*

There is, according to my son, a trend on YouTube where some content creators live on £1 a day in order to discuss issues surrounding poverty with their viewers. Most handle it well and discuss their privilege and how to donate to food banks.

Alfie Deyes (Zoella’s boyfriend), who has millions of subscribers and millions of pounds in the bank, has made a similar video but throughout it moans that he has to drink tap water, laughs endlessly at the situation including holding a £1coin like it is dog shit, blags free food using his celebrity, uses a personal trainer and then spends a small fortune on jewellery and clothes.

My son used to watch this guy and his group of friends but had realised what a waste of space he is (and I’m glad he came to that conclusion on his own). He watched the video because from the title alone he knew just how Deyes would handle it and he did not disappoint.

I struggle with how a man in his mid-twenties with such influence over so many people (many of whom will be from families who struggle financially) can be so removed from reality and yet make his fortune off the back of them.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/06/2018 21:11

God the typos!

Wow what a twat 🤦🏻‍♀️

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/06/2018 21:34

His response was pathetic too.

He comes off as being very entitled and of low intelligence. I guess because he’s not particularly had to work for anything in his life and success was given to him very early and very easily, and now he lives a life most of us can only dream of.

So he has no sense of graft or the difficulty of the world, or what it truly means to live in poverty. To be honest that ‘challenge’ always rubs me up the wrong way even when undertaken by more compassionate/understanding people - it’s not really the same if you go back to an enormous house every night and can stop whenever you like. It seems a bit insensitive and insulting to people actually in poverty, like it’s a fun ‘challenge’ to try out.

He’s also very defensive and takes criticism badly so has been lashing out at those who point out that this might not be the most sensitive approach. He still has armies of fans who will defend him to death, so sadly i can’t see him getting any perspective or learning anything.

musicinthe00ssucks · 16/06/2018 21:36

I hate him and his awful 'pretends to be a teenager but is a woman in her mid-twenties' girlfriend. They are both disgusting in the way they take advantage of their very young fan base. That advent calendar debacle last year was unforgivable

Tessliketrees · 16/06/2018 21:37

I didn't know who Zoella or the guy who made this was until I watched it (I still don't really) but found this genuinely hilarious.

It might cheer you up.

Doingreat · 16/06/2018 21:57

I've always found her annoying. Never watched a YouTube tutorial of hers to the end. Don't know why. So grating and fake somehow. And that was before she came out with her overpriced tat of a beauty line. As for her boyfriend... no words

Doingreat · 16/06/2018 21:59

@tesslike i just watched the video. Wow her 50 quid adventure calendar is made up of things you might put in a kids party bag. She should be bloody ashamed of herself

Doingreat · 16/06/2018 22:00

*advent calendar... not bloody adventure calendar lol

LemonSqueezy0 · 16/06/2018 22:09

What an arsehole Hmm

Wish they'd both just disappear now....

Yes I feel the same but at least some of them point people in the direction of awareness and helping. But I do agree, it is like poverty tourism.

He handles criticism very poorly, I just hope teens learn to see him for what he is.

Teens soon become twenties and when his fan base grow up they will regard him with contempt. He and his silly girlfriend will wash up as yesterday’s news.

natesbabie · 18/06/2018 10:48

he really is not very intelligent. he used to have representation who had a team to manage him - and they would oversee his content to avoid this kind of thing but he recently parted ways with them because he felt too 'controlled' and now owns the company who represent him i.e. its basically friends who are 'yes' people. his ego is out of control.

louderthan · 18/06/2018 12:19

JaackMaate has done a brilliant response video. He's the only YouTuber I have any time for

natesbabie · 18/06/2018 12:31

louderthan yep, it's spot on

MismatchedStripySocks · 18/06/2018 12:52

We literally had £1.49 in our account to last us 10 days the other month after some unexpected bills. Don’t suppose he wouldn’t have enjoyed that so much Sad We work full time too so very depressing.

Littlebluebird123 · 18/06/2018 13:05

Tesslikestrees
Thanks for sharing- best thing I've watched today! 😂😂

mmmgoats · 18/06/2018 13:58

I loathe both of them. And i think it’s terrifying how they have manipulated an entire army of internet supporters who genuinely believe they can do no wrong, so I am delighted to see he’s actually getting a bit of backlash from this.

i think he must actually be a be dopey to put this video out there and be surprised at how it’s taken. Poverty is so hilarious to him, he was practically crying that he couldn’t buy sushi and had to drink tap water.
The pair of them were in the right place at the right time and have capitalised on that - fair play to them- but they are so entitled and out of touch, they genuinely believe that they have worked so hard for it. To hear either of them talk you’d think they deserved a Nobel Peace Prize.

The £1 video is the worst though. It gave me so much rage when I saw it, I couldn’t string a sentence
together to articulate it!

lizzie1970a · 18/06/2018 14:41

I got a couple of minutes in and couldn't bear him. Drippy voice, entitled manner. Oh I can't even drink water out of that tap, pour me, not allowed ice or something. Moaning about not having the money for a coffee. No spoonful of instant in the house or something? It was never going to be a realistic representation of anything. I zoomed forward and saw him for ages at the gym, then wearing someones pink slip on sandals then going through a list of who he could phone for free food. Oh, some of these sound American or Canadian. Switched off. What a drip.

lizzie1970a · 18/06/2018 14:42

haha, poor me, not pour me. Brain hasn't engaged today.

natesbabie · 18/06/2018 15:24

Of course he wouldn't have a clue, he owns at least 5 properties and the one he lives in is worth £1.7m. Easy to pretend when you don't have to live it.

SmashedMug · 18/06/2018 15:28

Both him and Zoella seem to be in some sort of weird frozen in time state where they stopped maturing mentally beyond the age of 15/16 but have the money of adult millionaires to spend with those 15/16 year old minds. It's very odd.

RoseDog · 18/06/2018 15:31

He has took the video down now, donating the proceeds to charity and has put up an apology Hmm

I agree with the above posters about jack mate, his zoella advent calendar video is what convinced my teen dd that Zoella and Alfie are not quite what they seem!
