To be fucking furious that a Tory MP just prevented upskirting being made a criminal offence?

Tory MP Christopher Chope has just singlehandedly prevented the passing of the private members bill supported by the government that would have made upskirting a sexual offence, by shouting Object.

Can I urge you all to leave a message on his parliamentary office answerphone and email him to ask why he thinks men should be entitled to photograph women's genitalia?

SoddingUnicorns there were calls of "shame" immediately, including from female and male Tory MPs.

A Government spokesman said:

"This behaviour is a hideous invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded and distressed.

“It cannot be tolerated, so it is absolutely right that the Government supports this Bill to make ‘upskirting’ a specific offence.

“Whilst we are disappointed this Bill did not pass second reading today, we look forward to supporting these measures through the House at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Chope speaks for himself only.

Should men in kilts "take responsibility for their attire" so they don't get upkilted?

Nikephorus · 15/06/2018 17:41

This callous disregard for women is what being a Tory is all about. Tory men prefer women to be at home and somewhat chained to the kitchen sink so this kind of thing wouldnt happen to them. Tory women basically agree with this.
What a complete load of bollocks. If you'd bothered to do your research you'd have seen that this had official Tory approval & was expected to go through.

RubyShooFan · 15/06/2018 17:43

Would somebody like to tell me which party DOESN’T have a ‘callous disregard for women’ Confused

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/06/2018 17:47

This callous disregard for women is what being a Tory is all about. I think that's wildly unfair. Surely callous disregard for the poor is their primary goal
Well yes, that makes sense, because otherwise women would be first in something, and they wouldn’t want that, would they? Grin

Fightthebear · 15/06/2018 17:55

To be fair this Bill had Tory support.

He’s a certain type of old school ToryBoy.

That thrives because they are tolerated within their own party.

kistanbul · 15/06/2018 18:18

The decision he objected to was whether to allow it to go to a committee for proper scrutiny.

All those people saying that he objected because there hadn't been enough debate have misunderstood what happened.

@kilino how so?

ohfourfoxache · 15/06/2018 18:20

I’ve also just emailed. It was not polite.

I see - I'm the one whose lost the plot, not the Tory fossil who just prevented upskirting from becoming a sexual offence Hmm

Whenever I see people. Putting full stops. Where they are not needed. For emphasis. I know they are an idiot.

And a dick.

I don't think I have ever said anything in defence of Tory MPs before, but this time I think he is right. I doubt very much that he is actually in favour of upskirting, it's more that private members bills are almost always bad law that requires expense test cases to prove that they are unworkable. Much better for laws to be properly formulated and debaters. If it has government approval they should do it properly instead of trying to do it in the cheap

Really?

ForalltheSaints · 15/06/2018 18:32

I suggest also contacting the head of his Christchurch constituency association to say that you think he should be deselected, and Brandon Lewis, the Party Chairman that he has the Tory whip withdrawn. This is just the most heinous of his actions, not the only one. He has form/previous for blocking laws, three examples being:

On 11 October 2011, Chope raised an eleventh-hour objection to the Hillsborough debate taking place because he believed a debate about MPs' pensions was more important.

In December 2013 Chope objected to the second reading of the Alan Turing (Statutory Pardon) Bill in the House of Commons. Because of this, the Government decided to act under the royal prerogative of mercy. On 24 December 2013 Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a free pardon.

On 28 November 2014 Chope, a private landlord, filibustered a Liberal Democrat bill with cross party support intended to make revenge evictions an offence.

NonnoMum · 15/06/2018 18:37

Come on, Mumsnet. Collective campaigning. This is so totally wrong. Email. Phone. Don't put up with this crap anymore.

CornishMaid1 · 15/06/2018 18:45

Apparently he has a habit of objecting to private member's bill because he doesn't like MPs being able to propose bills! I bet he didn't even bother to read what it was about. All he had to do was say 'object'.

Other MPs did shout him down with 'shame' when he did it (rules as they are there is nothing they can do as one objection is all that is needed and it can't be overruled) and lots of MPs from each side have come out against him.

Please don't make this an anti-Conservative thing - it isn't. I am Conservative and he does not speak for me or anyone I know. It is absolutely disgusting behaviour.

The bill is due back before parliament to be read again on 6th July and the government have already said they will be doing all they can to get it through. I think if it does not pass as a private members bill they will try to get it through another way.

NoSuchThingAsAlpha · 15/06/2018 18:50

Please don't make this an anti-Conservative thing - it isn't.

He's a Conservative MP.

ForalltheSaints · 15/06/2018 18:50

I agree it should be directed at him not the Tories as a whole, but the Tories should withdraw the whip and then his local party deselect him.

farter · 15/06/2018 18:52

Signed the petition and emailed the idiot.

Technology makes the offence possible, therefore the laws must be updated to reflect society.

In addition - history of political 'playing' should be reviewed urgently.

Octopeppa · 15/06/2018 19:04

He's a Conservative MP.

He isn't speaking for the party, just himself.

Sarahconnor1 · 15/06/2018 19:04

I'm no Tory apologist but it's pretty clear his party are pissed off with him

LakieLady · 15/06/2018 19:05

I'm going to get some fabric paints and paint the words "Fuck off Chope, you misogynist cretin" on my knickers.*

Then I'm going to upskirt myself and email him the pic.

*my knickers are plenty large enough for this

twirlywho · 15/06/2018 19:07

Lakie lady that is genius.

Who votes for people like him? Baffling.
