She famously said a million pounds wasn’t a lot of money and boasted of collecting houses like other people collect art.

If you think that was big-headed, brace yourself – because Catherine Zeta-Jones says she’s had enough of being modest.

The Welsh star, who is married to Hollywood legend Michael Douglas, says it is high time she stops apologising for her £200million fortune, stunning looks and Oscar-winning talent.

Catherine, 48, says: “One thing I’m not is humble any more. I’m sick of being humble. I really am. ‘So sorry I’m rich, so sorry I’m married to a movie star, so sorry I’m not so bad looking.’

“No sorrys. Enough. All that is important to me now is my work.

On one hand I say good for her, on the other it comes across as twatty.

Nobody has asked her to be humble nobody expects her to apologise for having money or good looks. This is just agloat she is assuming every womanbody was jealous of her but she is refusing to be humble any more it is actually a ridiculous thing to say.

Dungeondragon15 · 15/06/2018 09:56

I had a rather shitty life till I was 34. Then I forcibly turned it around. I MADE it happen.

Just because you were able to "turn around" your shitty life at 34, it doesn't mean everyone can or indeed that you will be able to in the future. Many bad things can happen e.g. death of your family or ill health which are beyond your control. Stop being so smug.

anothersnappyfarter · 15/06/2018 09:56

What work?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2018 09:56

I've got nothing to feel sorry for myself about, thank you. Oh and don't call me baby. It's Spider, Awwlook or Awww

VladmirsPoutine · 15/06/2018 09:57

@Zaphodsotherhead I'd say Amy Schumer fits that description.

Anyway, it's refreshingly honest. A lot of these 'stars' couldn't really give a toss and have to act like they care about their fans or whatever cause is the theme-du-jour. She's relieved herself of that. Good for her. She doesn't strike me as particularly talented or hard-working but she has been exceptionally lucky; some people just are.

Curtainshopping · 15/06/2018 09:59

Good for her. I'm what you might call well off (not beautiful though!) and I feel embarrassed about it daily. I know I'm lucky, I help others when I can but I'm tired of feeling apologetic for my situation.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2018 10:00

To be honest I've not heard anything about KZJ for a good few years. I wonder if shes piped up now because shes starting to become a non entity

Juells · 15/06/2018 10:00

I'm not rich but I've done just about everything I've ever wanted to do - though my standards are quite low, so it was easy 😜

Moonkissedlegs · 15/06/2018 10:04

On one hand I say good for her, on the other it comes across as twatty.

Well yeah, of course it's a bit twatty - but isn't the point that she doesn't give a fuck?!

critiqueofeveryday · 15/06/2018 10:05

Yeah, I do actually think the alpha wealthy have something to apologise for, namely sitting on so many resources that could be so much better used in the world. It IS wrong to be so rich.

kitkatsky · 15/06/2018 10:08

We both come from Swansea and I remember a few years ago she was quoted in a magazine saying "the smell of urine in lifts always takes me home" Given the part of Swansea her family lives in and the fact that she went to private school id like to know exactly where she smelt urine in lifts!

starcrossedseahorse · 15/06/2018 10:10

Good for her. Why not?

Mousefunky · 15/06/2018 10:11

Agree with her. I am proud of the way I look, of my career and of my life generally. She shouldn’t have to play down any pride she has in herself to make others less better off feel better.

MrsJayy · 15/06/2018 10:11

She was also quoted saying builders tea reminded her of home soo tea and piss is all wales has to offer Grin

Fontella · 15/06/2018 10:12

It's not so much about being modest, it's more about being gracious.

So she can't help the fact that she's beautiful, famous and rich? Fair enough. So she doesn't need to apologise for it? Fair enough.

But surely the fact that she is one of the luckiest and most privileged people on the planet - part of a tiny minority of super rich and famous - is something that she should be thanking her lucky stars for every single day.

It's not just about 'she's worked hard to get there' - sorry but that's bollocks. Millions and millions of people work hard and have very little to show for it - certainly nothing like the wealth, fame and privilege of CZJ.

There is nothing special about her - she has been incredibly fortunate that her combination of looks, talent, marriage and of course, luck - have opened the door to the rarified world of the super rich and famous, of which she is now a part.

THis thread may only be three pages long but it already has it all.

Its the most Mumsnetty Mumsnet thread of the week.

moonoflove · 15/06/2018 10:13

Can't understand the need to say anything. I don't think anyone was aware of her "humility" were they?. How would we have known what her inner most thoughts were? Confused Perhaps she just wants to remind us all how lucky she is, who knows. Just a very odd statement to make.

One things for sure, you can't take it with you when you die, you come into the world with nothing, you die with nothing. We're all the same, a bit of humility is a good thing.

2blueshoes · 15/06/2018 10:14

When I see the whole family together, they look really happy, even Kirk Douglas looks happy, he's still going!

Michael Douglas seems like a nice guy too. Yes they've had their ups and downs, but they've stuck at it. Catherine's had MH trouble too, so I'm glad she's happy. Her kids seem like normal kids, which you don't always get with Hollywood kids.

StrangeLookingParasite · 15/06/2018 10:15

I have worked VERY hard to turn my life around.

If hard work was all it took, every woman in India and most of Africa would be rich.

Queenoftheblitz · 15/06/2018 10:16

But she's not being honest by describing herself as "not so bad looking".
She is beautiful looking - she knows it and the world knows it.
But even describing her looks she can't be truly honest and has to minimise them.
It really is best if the people who seem to have it all simply acknowledge it by saying "I'm very lucky."
Show some class.

TanteRose · 15/06/2018 10:17

Dawn French got her down to a T ages ago Grin

LeahJack · 15/06/2018 10:18

Her stepson who has had terrible drug problems and been to jail for quite a while has said some incredibly lovely things about her how much she has supported his recovery and helped him readjust to life outside jail.

LillianGish · 15/06/2018 10:18

Fair enough - no need to be humble, but no need to gloat either. She comes across to me as someone who is trying to persuade herself how great she is. If you know you are great there would be no need to tell everyone about it - it should just speak for itself. True she’s very rich, but she’s married to an old man who by his own admission got throat cancer from his sex addiction days - so not much to boast about there. I would say that’s her opinion and if it makes her feel better about herself then good for her - we don’t necessarily need to agree with it.

PolkerrisBeach · 15/06/2018 10:19

Of course she shouldn't apologise for being a success.

You see it all the time on internet forums such as this one - people who have money or success are selfish, in a "bubble", don't understand real life, are downright liars, tax dodgers or fiddling the system somehow.

Good on her. Nothing wrong in shouting about what you've achieved.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2018 10:22

Never a truer word spoken, SLP.
Plus if people didn't have "miserable" lives
that would be job centre workers out of a job. After all its the unemployed and those down on their luck are the ones who are keeping them in employment.
