Use of titles - is this sexist?

Local Parish council and borough council refer to the few women involved with their titles. So for example a woman will be Councillor Mrs Brown or Mrs L Brown but a man would be Councillor Brown or L Brown.

Given that they are mostly over 60 is this a different generation showing of respect thing? To me its rude as its just a statement of a woman's marital status which is irrelevant. Either include everyone's title or none.

It's the old school way of doing it. They do it for judges too. It's starting to change but slowly.
