AIBU to feel sorry for myself because i'm stuck in this hotel for another 6 nights?

Away for work (still in UK). Boss paid for the accommodation up front at last minute. Nothing else was available within reasonable distance of my work thing and within what he considered a reasonable budget.

I gave it a quick Google before leaving home yesterday and reviews weren't all bad. Pictures on the website made it look basic but clean.

Checked in yesterday after a long day of travelling and I haven't slept since.

SPACE - one tiny shelf with a kettle on it (and two tea bags, one sachet of sugar, one pot of UHT milk) leaving me half a shelf-space to put my stuff like makeup and deodorant on. No shelf in the bathroom. Areas beside the sink taps are tilted and tiny so can't keep anything there. No flat surface in the shower to keep anything. There is a teeny bedside drawer. Handles are broken on two of these. Bottoms keep falling out of the drawers whenever i try to put socks or stuff in so I've had to leave them empty. Just need to keep all clothes in suitcase. Can put my beauty/wash stuff on top of this bedside table I suppose but a bit worried i'll knock it over in my sleep (if i ever get some). Can't move it away from the bed as it's screwed into the floor.

PLUGS - two in whole room. One beside bed which the lamp is plugged in to atop the bedisde cabinet. Can't get behind the cabinet to remove this plug for my phone as it's so tightly pushed against the wall and screwed into the floor. There is another one at the other side of the room which the kettle is plugged into. This looks totally unsafe. The back is coming away from the kettle plug. Won't be using that!

CLEANLINESS - Fake tan/foundation hand prints over the bathroom walls and wall next to bed, Inside of drawers are disgusting and stained (so just as well i didn't keep my socks in there!) A red smear that looks like blood next to the bed. Black splatter on wall next to sink. There is no housekeeping service. There are no towels or any little shampoos etc. Not even a bar of soap.

BUGS - There are little bugs along the window which look a bit like book lice (definitely not bed lice - I check for these in every hotel I stay in on holiday). I'd try to close my window to see if that stops them but it's so hot and clammy!

NOISE - it's a small place with maybe 15 rooms. Doors when closed have an awful centimetre round gap from the door frame. Doors are clearly the wrong size. This means I can hear every conversation my neighbours have. My next door neighbours got into trouble at 4am this morning for setting the fire alarm off as they decided to smoke in their rooms. The reception is only manned between 8am and 10pm so the manager had to drive down from his own home to check on it (took him 10 mins btw, and nobody evacuated the building). Manager then entered into a bit of a curt telling off with neighbours. He then drove back home. Since then, neighbours have been going down stairs and outside every ten minutes for a cigarette. While they're outside (right outside my window), they're shouting up to their pal in the room while he's hanging out the window next to mine. Doors and stairs alone make an absolute racket never mind them chattering.

I've asked them to be quiet. They just laugh and say sorry (i'm assuming they're drunk or just very immature).

HEAT - heater is on full and there seems no way to turn it off.

SIZE - room is very small. Maybe 10ft x 3ft. Then bathroom is approx 3ft by 2ft. Basically, when you stand up from the toilet and turn to flush, your bum touches the shower glass.

I have text the reception's out of hours number at 5am and 6.30am about the heater but had no reply. Not great, is it? What if there was an emergency?

There are no nearby shops to buy a sandwich or takeaway etc. No food offered at the hotel. Not even a drinks machine. It's basically a reception desk then rooms upstairs. Nothing else. Everything appears to be 30 min walk in any direction. Only garages and factories nearby. Luckily i get fed lunch at my work thing and i'm out every day. But i'm dreading spending the next 6 evenings here. It wasn't even cheap. £430 roughly to stay here seven nights. It honestly reminds me of the time I stayed in a hostel but at least I now have my own room and loo.

Hotel is non-refundable and no way would my manager be willing to lose that money and try to find me somewhere else. Doubtful he'd be able to as everything is booked up that's nearby. This hotel on their website is saying no availability too. So not even likely the manager can switch my rooms when I get back in this evening. Manager will say this is perfectly adequate. I suppose it is. I have shelter and a bed. But ... it's quite shit. This is my first work trip away and I was quite looking forward to it. Now I'm dreading future ones. Maybe in a few years if my salary goes up, I'll be able to afford adding to my boss's budget and booking somewhere a bit better.

If this is the way your boss treats his employees I think you should look for another job. Honestly.

AnotherWhinge · 12/06/2018 21:53

Hiya. Not long back. Managed to switch rooms! I've been given a much bigger double room now. Hotel manager couldnt have been more apologetic.

Met some new people at the event today so we all went into the centre together for some dinner. Mine came to around £9 so I'll not be totally reimbursed but at least I still got something nice and filling.

Feeling so much better now than I did earlier, thank you!

Good news.

KenAdams · 12/06/2018 22:10

£7.50 is pretty standard for public sector dinner allowance. We can't be seen to be wasting public sector money (assuming the OP works for the public sector).

MissCharleyP · 12/06/2018 22:20

KenAdams in what year? 1964? It’s ludicrous, you’d struggle to get a sandwich, crisp and a drink in some areas, not a cooked meal which is what most people have of an evening. You couldn’t even get a kebab and a drink here and I live in the north now! My brother works in the public sector and a couple of years ago came to London for a meeting. I met up with him and we went for dinner. Pretty sure his allowance was £25, we paid together and he just had to highlight on the receipt what was for him for his expenses. No reasonable employer would think that was a reasonable amount for an evening meal, lunch maybe.

loveka · 13/06/2018 12:32

You simply can't get a hot cooked evening meal for that.

I am freelance, but have been given £18 when working for public sector clients. Even that isn't really enough.

itstimeforanamechange · 13/06/2018 13:29

£7.50 is fine for a meal deal from Boots/M&S and the like but that would be for lunch. In the evening you want a cooked meal. I think £15 is the absolute minimum and that would only cover one course and a drink.

DevilsDoorbell · 13/06/2018 13:56

Dh works for the public sector, his meal allowance is more than £7.50

Sweetpea55 · 13/06/2018 14:05

OP if I lived near wherever your doing this course you could come to mine for dinner,,,or I would transport something hot and nourishing in a heated bag to you..

Weezol · 13/06/2018 14:10

Glad you have a better room. I'd still report the hotel to the Fire Service - google the nearest station and give them a call. It sounds unsafe to say the least and certainly needs inspecting.

Baaba · 13/06/2018 17:40

Take photos and send them to your manager! You wouldn't pay money yourself to stay somewhere like that so why should you for work!

babyno5 · 13/06/2018 17:48

OP I’m so glad you’re sorted. £7.50 is ridiculous and even public sector pays more than that.
Enjoy your course, get better qualified and find a better boss to work for!!
I would never expect any of my team to be in conditions like that!!

pollymere · 13/06/2018 18:03

Ask for a different room. One in which the furniture isn't broken and the bathroom is clean. They will always have a spare for emergency bookings and often it's a nice one. You know that famous Tower Suite that overlooks Charing Cross Station? I got that once after my room was under par. If it's truly unsatisfactory then your credit card company or your boss's can get a refund as its not as described.

Wendycastle · 13/06/2018 18:12

Glad you got a nicer room OP Smile

I'm in the public sector and £7.50 is the max I've ever got. The last training course I went on we had "breakfast" provided with the hotel (it was one of those throwaway bowls of cereal you peel off the lid and pour milk in) and we were not given any other allowance for food. It was deemed we were very lucky to have been allowed out (we were, not many training opportunities now). The public sector is on its knees in many areas of the UK.

Back to OP, hope the rest of the week gets better for you!

melonscoffer · 13/06/2018 18:14

I'd definitely not care if I had to pay over my allowance for food.
Why are you sticking to what they gave you?
Feed yourself and stay healthy and on top of your game whilst you are training.

halfwitpicker · 13/06/2018 18:15

Least you've got MN

halfwitpicker · 13/06/2018 18:15

£7.50

Hmm
EggysMom · 13/06/2018 18:17

there doesn't seem to be availability anywhere without going into the city centre and paying almost a grand! Why the hell is this place so booked up?

Which city? Is there actually something else on, for example, Manchester tonight is busy because of the Beyonce / JayZ concert.

Pollaidh · 13/06/2018 18:18

Our public sector dinner allowance is a lot higher than that. With £7.50 you couldn't even get a simple main course in a cheap curry house in most parts of the country.

Also there are H&S standards for hotels used by public sector standards, and this one sounds like it fails them. If you get electrocuted, you'd sue.

crunchymint · 13/06/2018 18:18

Even Local Authorities give you £9.50 for an evening meal allowance.

Bramble71 · 13/06/2018 18:19

Ahh so pleased to hear you have been moved to a bigger and better room. :-)

crunchymint · 13/06/2018 18:20

And local authority allowance is based on the fact you have to eat at home, so you are expected to top it up yourself.

EustaciaPieface · 13/06/2018 18:25

Delighted to hear you’ve been moved and had some food with friends! Hope the rest of the week is even better.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 13/06/2018 18:30

Keep every receipt for food and invoice your company when you get back. Send it straight to HR. You have no cooking facilities so you are obliged to dine out and £7.50 a day for lunch and evening meal is ridiculous.
Next time, book your own hotel on a website like booking.com where you can cancel it with 24 hours notice. Then when your lazy penny pinching boss comes up with another cheap, last minute gem, you can substitute your own alternative. Good luck.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/06/2018 18:31

Crikey.
I would also complain to your boss then higher about the food allowance. That also includes drinks. Outrageous. You can’t get food and s drink for that!

Glad you’ve got a better room.
