Away for work (still in UK). Boss paid for the accommodation up front at last minute. Nothing else was available within reasonable distance of my work thing and within what he considered a reasonable budget.

I gave it a quick Google before leaving home yesterday and reviews weren't all bad. Pictures on the website made it look basic but clean.

Checked in yesterday after a long day of travelling and I haven't slept since.

SPACE - one tiny shelf with a kettle on it (and two tea bags, one sachet of sugar, one pot of UHT milk) leaving me half a shelf-space to put my stuff like makeup and deodorant on. No shelf in the bathroom. Areas beside the sink taps are tilted and tiny so can't keep anything there. No flat surface in the shower to keep anything. There is a teeny bedside drawer. Handles are broken on two of these. Bottoms keep falling out of the drawers whenever i try to put socks or stuff in so I've had to leave them empty. Just need to keep all clothes in suitcase. Can put my beauty/wash stuff on top of this bedside table I suppose but a bit worried i'll knock it over in my sleep (if i ever get some). Can't move it away from the bed as it's screwed into the floor.

PLUGS - two in whole room. One beside bed which the lamp is plugged in to atop the bedisde cabinet. Can't get behind the cabinet to remove this plug for my phone as it's so tightly pushed against the wall and screwed into the floor. There is another one at the other side of the room which the kettle is plugged into. This looks totally unsafe. The back is coming away from the kettle plug. Won't be using that!

CLEANLINESS - Fake tan/foundation hand prints over the bathroom walls and wall next to bed, Inside of drawers are disgusting and stained (so just as well i didn't keep my socks in there!) A red smear that looks like blood next to the bed. Black splatter on wall next to sink. There is no housekeeping service. There are no towels or any little shampoos etc. Not even a bar of soap.

BUGS - There are little bugs along the window which look a bit like book lice (definitely not bed lice - I check for these in every hotel I stay in on holiday). I'd try to close my window to see if that stops them but it's so hot and clammy!

NOISE - it's a small place with maybe 15 rooms. Doors when closed have an awful centimetre round gap from the door frame. Doors are clearly the wrong size. This means I can hear every conversation my neighbours have. My next door neighbours got into trouble at 4am this morning for setting the fire alarm off as they decided to smoke in their rooms. The reception is only manned between 8am and 10pm so the manager had to drive down from his own home to check on it (took him 10 mins btw, and nobody evacuated the building). Manager then entered into a bit of a curt telling off with neighbours. He then drove back home. Since then, neighbours have been going down stairs and outside every ten minutes for a cigarette. While they're outside (right outside my window), they're shouting up to their pal in the room while he's hanging out the window next to mine. Doors and stairs alone make an absolute racket never mind them chattering.

I've asked them to be quiet. They just laugh and say sorry (i'm assuming they're drunk or just very immature).

HEAT - heater is on full and there seems no way to turn it off.

SIZE - room is very small. Maybe 10ft x 3ft. Then bathroom is approx 3ft by 2ft. Basically, when you stand up from the toilet and turn to flush, your bum touches the shower glass.

I have text the reception's out of hours number at 5am and 6.30am about the heater but had no reply. Not great, is it? What if there was an emergency?

There are no nearby shops to buy a sandwich or takeaway etc. No food offered at the hotel. Not even a drinks machine. It's basically a reception desk then rooms upstairs. Nothing else. Everything appears to be 30 min walk in any direction. Only garages and factories nearby. Luckily i get fed lunch at my work thing and i'm out every day. But i'm dreading spending the next 6 evenings here. It wasn't even cheap. £430 roughly to stay here seven nights. It honestly reminds me of the time I stayed in a hostel but at least I now have my own room and loo.

Hotel is non-refundable and no way would my manager be willing to lose that money and try to find me somewhere else. Doubtful he'd be able to as everything is booked up that's nearby. This hotel on their website is saying no availability too. So not even likely the manager can switch my rooms when I get back in this evening. Manager will say this is perfectly adequate. I suppose it is. I have shelter and a bed. But ... it's quite shit. This is my first work trip away and I was quite looking forward to it. Now I'm dreading future ones. Maybe in a few years if my salary goes up, I'll be able to afford adding to my boss's budget and booking somewhere a bit better.

Could you ask some of the people on the work thing where they’re staying? Or could you travel everyday? Are there any other towns nearby you could get a travel lodge and commute in? I used to do a 5 hour round trip to deliver training. I wouldn’t stay there. Simple as. Email/ring your boss and tell him exactly what you’ve posted on here. Bottom line - it isn’t safe, there isn’t anywhere you can get meals, you’re not at your best for trying to learn as you can’t get a decent meal or a decent nights sleep. The fact that he moans about the cost is tough shit for him - he either needs to find another supplier more locally or do training in-house.

Bibesia · 12/06/2018 07:53

Contact the local council's Health and Safety department about the hotel.

Berthatydfil · 12/06/2018 07:54

Complain about the doors, fire alarm and dodgy electrics - those issues are unsafe and I doubt they would pass a fire inspection.
Having a heater on in this weather - urrggh how on earth will you sleep ?
The standard of cleanliness is also unacceptable.
The storage -minor and not worth complaining about.

Your boss sounds like a total tight wad. I assume he needs certified trained staff to maintain his business so he needs to pay for it.

With regard to the food allowance - yes you would be eating anyway but you’re not at home have no food storage or cooking facilities so your options are limited so he needs to reimburse you an adequate amount.

To be honest if this is a true sign of his behaviour and attitude to his staff I would be looking for another job.

trojanpony · 12/06/2018 07:54

Unless your boss is the owner of the company (which he doesn’t sound like he is) it is costing him precisely nothing,
even if there is extra expense I would argue it is his fault for not booking in a timely manner, not yours. Also it’s completely standard for companies to pay for training and associated costs.
I’d also argue if they are sending you on training it’s important so you need to be “on form” so need proper rest/nutrition. then they should be looking after decent employees.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2018 07:55

room is very small. Maybe 10ft x 3ft. Then bathroom is approx 3ft by 2ft.

How can you fit a bed plus bedside cabinet in a room that’s 3ft wide? Or did you mean metres... I hope you meant metres!

YANBU about any of the things you mention though. It sounds shit.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 12/06/2018 07:56

Your manager sounds like a tool, but maybe you could still let him know as a "definitely don't book this for anyone else in future" email so you can highlight how shit it is but under the guise of concern for others?

TERFragetteCity · 12/06/2018 07:57

Tell him it just isn't acceptable and he needs to sort something out.

AnotherWhinge · 12/06/2018 08:00

£7.50 budget for dinner each night which I thought was loads! But not really when there isn't anything local.

I'd honestly just go ahead and book somewhere else on my credit card and fight to get reimbursed by work at a later date but there doesn't seem to be availability anywhere without going into the city centre and paying almost a grand! Why the hell is this place so booked up? There are about 200 people at the training course so I'm assuming that's why?

Ugh. Trying to see the funny side. I'll get chatting to some people at work today and see if anybody else is staying here. My colleague told me when she came on the course last year she did an air b and b which involved a house share with her own room. TBH, i didn't fancy it as I'm rather socially awkward and didn't like the thought of living with strangers. To be honest, i'd still rather stay here than share a living space with someone else. How daft is that?!

Thanks again for the advice and listening ears. I'll have a think today and try to sort it when I get back. Might see the manager on my way out if he's arrived yet.

Cornishclio · 12/06/2018 08:00

It sounds awful. You agreed to do the training but the expenses are down to the company. Is this dreadful manager the owner of the company? As it's 6 nights regardless of the cost if you can afford it I would check out and go somewhere else. Have words with your boss when you get back and show him pictures. Complain to manager and ask for refund on nights not used unless he can move you to a better room. At least he can get the cleaners in to it.

ilovesooty · 12/06/2018 08:00

Bugger concern for others.
You need to tell him that on health and safety grounds you aren't staying another night
He moves you elsewhere or you return home. His choice.

QuimReaper · 12/06/2018 08:02

OP complain to the reception desk and ask if any other rooms are available! I think these little guest house type places quite often have some total dud rooms and some which are a bit better.

It sounds hellish though, my sympathies. Especially the food situation. I assume you've tried just-eat and all that to see if anyone will deliver to you?

ilovesooty · 12/06/2018 08:02

And for heaven's sake. How can a shared safe place be worse than a safety risk like this?

AnotherWhinge · 12/06/2018 08:04

No I mean feet unfortunately. I might be a bit off. I'm 5 and a half ft and using myself as my measuring guide. You basically walk in. Single bed is pushed against the window wall. The head of bed is against the top short wall. Then beside cabinet beside that. Then door.

At foot of bed is a small space then the shelf on the wall with kettle. Beside that is door to bathroom. Very small and cramped!

OP posts:
MissCharleyP · 12/06/2018 08:07

£7.50 for dinner? Are they taking the piss? I used to moan at getting £25! Go home, forget the course and look for another job. This company don’t value you or your safety and comfort. Where the hell can you get a meal for £7.50?? I’d have laughed them out of the office.

Changebagsandgladrags · 12/06/2018 08:07

Which town do you need to be in? Perhaps the power of mumsnet can find a nicer hotel?

RaininSummer · 12/06/2018 08:08

Sounds hideous and potentially dangerous. Send him pictures. Your food allowance is grim too, would get a meal with a free drink in Wetherspoons but doubtful anywhere else.

Changebagsandgladrags · 12/06/2018 08:08

McDonald's is about all..

GahWhatever · 12/06/2018 08:12

If you are in a city book yourself into a Travelodge a bit further away and get a taxi in. Tomorrow night join up with others from the course and go for dinner (there will be others alone in the evenings too). You may have to pay it yourself but your safety is paramount.
If you really can't avoid staying there get food before you go back to the room (as late as possible) so you don't need to go out. Take lots of photos.
Your manager may be a tyrant but he won't want you to come to harm!

Whatshallidonowpeople · 12/06/2018 08:13

10ft by 3ft?? You wouldn't even be able to get a single bed in there never mind bedside cabinets

TERFragetteCity · 12/06/2018 08:14

Are there other colleagues on your course as well, and where are they staying?

Namethecat · 12/06/2018 08:14

Sounds like somewhere I stayed a few years ago ( outskirts of Manchester, near a hospital ) that was also the pits. Thankfully only 1 night. Can you not phone your manager ?

GahWhatever · 12/06/2018 08:15

...also...it should not be necessary (obviously) but investing in a bottle of cleaning fluid, some rubber gloves and a pack of jay cloths will give you something to do tonight and you'll sleep better is a clean room.

Teateaandmoretea · 12/06/2018 08:21

Your boss sounds utterly shit. If this is the sort of stuff you have to put up with at this stage I would be running for my life.

No decent company would make you stay in a hovel, it is a sign.

4dogs · 12/06/2018 08:25

Your meal allowance is pitiful! Your boss sounds like a nightmare as does your hotel.

ferrier · 12/06/2018 08:25

Photograph and document all the issues. Send the top five to your boss.
