Away for work (still in UK). Boss paid for the accommodation up front at last minute. Nothing else was available within reasonable distance of my work thing and within what he considered a reasonable budget.

I gave it a quick Google before leaving home yesterday and reviews weren't all bad. Pictures on the website made it look basic but clean.

Checked in yesterday after a long day of travelling and I haven't slept since.

SPACE - one tiny shelf with a kettle on it (and two tea bags, one sachet of sugar, one pot of UHT milk) leaving me half a shelf-space to put my stuff like makeup and deodorant on. No shelf in the bathroom. Areas beside the sink taps are tilted and tiny so can't keep anything there. No flat surface in the shower to keep anything. There is a teeny bedside drawer. Handles are broken on two of these. Bottoms keep falling out of the drawers whenever i try to put socks or stuff in so I've had to leave them empty. Just need to keep all clothes in suitcase. Can put my beauty/wash stuff on top of this bedside table I suppose but a bit worried i'll knock it over in my sleep (if i ever get some). Can't move it away from the bed as it's screwed into the floor.

PLUGS - two in whole room. One beside bed which the lamp is plugged in to atop the bedisde cabinet. Can't get behind the cabinet to remove this plug for my phone as it's so tightly pushed against the wall and screwed into the floor. There is another one at the other side of the room which the kettle is plugged into. This looks totally unsafe. The back is coming away from the kettle plug. Won't be using that!

CLEANLINESS - Fake tan/foundation hand prints over the bathroom walls and wall next to bed, Inside of drawers are disgusting and stained (so just as well i didn't keep my socks in there!) A red smear that looks like blood next to the bed. Black splatter on wall next to sink. There is no housekeeping service. There are no towels or any little shampoos etc. Not even a bar of soap.

BUGS - There are little bugs along the window which look a bit like book lice (definitely not bed lice - I check for these in every hotel I stay in on holiday). I'd try to close my window to see if that stops them but it's so hot and clammy!

NOISE - it's a small place with maybe 15 rooms. Doors when closed have an awful centimetre round gap from the door frame. Doors are clearly the wrong size. This means I can hear every conversation my neighbours have. My next door neighbours got into trouble at 4am this morning for setting the fire alarm off as they decided to smoke in their rooms. The reception is only manned between 8am and 10pm so the manager had to drive down from his own home to check on it (took him 10 mins btw, and nobody evacuated the building). Manager then entered into a bit of a curt telling off with neighbours. He then drove back home. Since then, neighbours have been going down stairs and outside every ten minutes for a cigarette. While they're outside (right outside my window), they're shouting up to their pal in the room while he's hanging out the window next to mine. Doors and stairs alone make an absolute racket never mind them chattering.

I've asked them to be quiet. They just laugh and say sorry (i'm assuming they're drunk or just very immature).

HEAT - heater is on full and there seems no way to turn it off.

SIZE - room is very small. Maybe 10ft x 3ft. Then bathroom is approx 3ft by 2ft. Basically, when you stand up from the toilet and turn to flush, your bum touches the shower glass.

I have text the reception's out of hours number at 5am and 6.30am about the heater but had no reply. Not great, is it? What if there was an emergency?

There are no nearby shops to buy a sandwich or takeaway etc. No food offered at the hotel. Not even a drinks machine. It's basically a reception desk then rooms upstairs. Nothing else. Everything appears to be 30 min walk in any direction. Only garages and factories nearby. Luckily i get fed lunch at my work thing and i'm out every day. But i'm dreading spending the next 6 evenings here. It wasn't even cheap. £430 roughly to stay here seven nights. It honestly reminds me of the time I stayed in a hostel but at least I now have my own room and loo.

Hotel is non-refundable and no way would my manager be willing to lose that money and try to find me somewhere else. Doubtful he'd be able to as everything is booked up that's nearby. This hotel on their website is saying no availability too. So not even likely the manager can switch my rooms when I get back in this evening. Manager will say this is perfectly adequate. I suppose it is. I have shelter and a bed. But ... it's quite shit. This is my first work trip away and I was quite looking forward to it. Now I'm dreading future ones. Maybe in a few years if my salary goes up, I'll be able to afford adding to my boss's budget and booking somewhere a bit better.

I think your best bet is to put up with it and try to alleviate by going out/distracting yourself (Watching TV?). If your job depends on it and you are just starting then you don’t have much choice really.

FrolickingForklift · 12/06/2018 08:26

£7.50 is pathetic :(

UrsulaPandress · 12/06/2018 08:30

Do you drive?

TheEmmaDilemma · 12/06/2018 08:31

£7.50 is ridiculous for an evening meal. And they should cover transport costs for you during the day which includes to and from somewhere to get that evening meal.

I get £35.00 per evening meal.

Teateaandmoretea · 12/06/2018 08:31

£7.50 Shock is utterly outrageous.

purplewurple · 12/06/2018 08:31

Can we have pics please

Etymology23 · 12/06/2018 08:33

Seriously look at getting a new job OP.

I get £25 for evening meals. Never seen less than £15 I think.

sexnotgender · 12/06/2018 08:34

This is dreadful! I would seriously reconsider working for a company that thought so little of their staff.

Isadora2007 · 12/06/2018 08:34

It’s definitely not okay for you to be put there and on such a low budget. But do try not to entirely catastrophise about it all. Take photos and email your boss copying in your HR dept. Look elsewhere if there is suitable accommodation. Speak to others at the course- having some social time would help im sure.
But do bare in mind you’re on a course to further your career. You will only at most spend 6 days here. Some people may have been given accommodation like this to live in. A good friend of mine got rehomed due to domestic abuse with her 4 year old. The flat she was given is full of damp and smells awful, with crappy carpets and horrible furniture etc. But it’s a roof over her and her sons head.
Sadly thousands of people would love to have accommodation like yours as it’s an improvement. So try to keep some perspective.

WowserBowser · 12/06/2018 08:37

This is crazy - speak to reception. I don't understand why this hasn't been your first port of call. People move rooms all the time. Tell them you want all the facilities to work etc.

This sounds shit I’d be kicking up blue murder at reception -- don't do this. The receptionist isn't at fault. They will be more likely to assist if you talk to them like a human being.

DevilsDoorbell · 12/06/2018 08:38

I actually agree with the pp who said go home and get another job. This shows you how much your boss values you as an employee. He already moaning that he has to pay the cost of this training. He’s not going to get any better

nNina22 · 12/06/2018 08:38

Sounds dreadful but doubt bedroom size is really 10ft by 3ft and bathroom 3ft by 2ft.

squidgesquodge · 12/06/2018 08:40

Is your boss the owner of the business? And is it a small company? Presumably there is no expenses policy or HR dept?

If this a compulsory course & he is treating you & it like this, then I think you should reconsider if you want to work there. I have worked for owner managed small businesses before and, whilst they were usually more cost conscious as it did hit them in their pocket, they still wanted their employees to be happy & safe. On my first business trip, my boss was really concerned about how I'd get from the station to the hotel as I wasn't arriving until late at night and gave me £20 from petty cash the morning I left just to make sure I had enough cash for a taxi.

BarryTheKestrel · 12/06/2018 08:41

Go above your boss and go to HR. It's not acceptable and your boss should not be forcing you to compromise your safety.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/06/2018 09:32

This is outrageous. Do you have an hr dept? Does your boss have a manager? £7.50 for dinner and expected to walk 30mins to get there. Shock

ItsNachoCheese · 12/06/2018 09:35

Id be looking for a new job... your boss sounds awful

SecretSantaaaaaa · 12/06/2018 09:45

I would really struggle on £7.50. You can't even get a wetherspoons meal for that!

Can we see a pic of the room!

ilovesooty · 12/06/2018 09:47

Surely if it's a large enough set up to have mandatory training there is an HR department to contact?

BottleOfJameson · 12/06/2018 10:20

Bloody hell! If you have to travel for work the perk is meant to be a decent meal out. £20-£30 at least!

Karigan198 · 12/06/2018 10:24

You can’t stay in a room with bloodstains. Speak to your boss. The little things like plugs I’d just grin and bear it but bloodstains and noise no way.

mogloveseggs · 12/06/2018 10:31

Complain. If they can move you they should. How did you book?

Missingstreetlife · 12/06/2018 10:36

I bet the trainers and/or the venue have contacts with accommodation providers. See if any vacancy through cancellation? Probably could have been booked when booking training place
Tell your boss travelodge is minimum standard, basic but clean and usually a pizza hut or similar nearby.

listsandbudgets · 12/06/2018 10:50

Sadly, this sounds like the sort of hotel where councils put up homeless families on a regular basis :( If that is the case, do talk to the management but don't necessarily expect much from them as they usually manage to fill their rooms through the council. Do however report the hotel to the local councils environmental health as its clearly not safe .

Tell us which city you're in? We may be able to point you in the general direction of decent cheap food places - and they do exist though £7.50 is a very paltry sum. I wonder exactly what and where your boss is expecting you to eat? For a meal at home for the family itwould be plenty - for a meal out its hopeless especially if youre half an hour from nearest restaurant.

I hope you actually got pastries and coffee at breakfast and the course at least is interesting.

listsandbudgets · 12/06/2018 10:53

The last time I stayed in a room that bad was when I was a student. It was £7 a night for a double with breakfast in the middle of Paris but it came with exciting added extras - blood stains in bath, a used tampon in bed and a dead mouse in wardrobe!! We slept in sleeping bags on the floor (which was thankfully wooden not carpeted) and went out for breakfast Grin

Arcadia · 12/06/2018 21:48

Any update OP? What did you have for dinner? Sounds pretty depressing I hope you at least get some sleep tonight.
