Am I the only one who gets completely fucked off with all the stupid abbreviations on here?! DS DD DH STBXH DN DGF fucking hell can't people just write it normally? Sometimes you get seven abbreviations in one paragraph it's so annoying trying to remember what mean what!

BF can mean best friend or boyfriend - not that always that easy to work out given context!

I find DF being used for friend and fiancé unreasonably irritating

As does DS4 - when actually he's your DS1 who happens to be 4, rather than your 4th DS

stripesandsilver · 11/06/2018 08:11

I didn't know HTH was hope that helps. In my head it was hit the hay!! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Toofle · 11/06/2018 08:15

It's not 'the' hoi polloi. Hoi IS 'the'. Polloi is 'many'.

Brahumbug · 11/06/2018 08:19

Thanks Screaming ValentaGrin

Jakethekid · 11/06/2018 08:21

For some reason whenever I read the 'D' in front of something I read it as darling rather than dear and then in my head I have to read it in a posh way, I'm not really sure why.

I never use either for these words in this context in real life either.

BIWI · 11/06/2018 08:32

My favourite is DILLIGAF

Always makes me think of daffodils

EyeDrops · 11/06/2018 08:35

One I'm never sure of is "boak". I know roughly what it means, but don't know if it's an acronym or representative of the retching sound?

BIWI · 11/06/2018 08:40

Boak is a word not an acronym

bananafish81 · 11/06/2018 08:46

It's a Scottish word

Ohh, I had no idea but see it all the time! Now I know. Thanks Smile

80+ posts and no-one has yet mentioned that there is a page of abbreviations for reference (there's a link to it in the Talk drop-down menu at the top of this page, at least if you are looking at this in a web-browser).

www.mumsnet.com/info/acronyms

HTH

ShotsFired · 11/06/2018 11:10

Special page or not, it does seem odd to have to need a glossary to hand just to read forum posts. Half the time the abbreviation is just as faffy to type as the full word anyway.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 11/06/2018 11:19

You mean STBXH isn't Shitty Twat Bag Ex Husband? Grin

BIWI · 11/06/2018 12:06

Look - a) they aren't all unique to MN

And

b) it's one of the quirks of MN

If you don't like them you don't have to use them. And there are plenty of other sites available

Neighbourcrisis · 11/06/2018 13:28

I always read hth as being sarcastic "well if you read the thread you'd know. Hth"!

And pfb also as a sarcastic "precious fucking baby" for quite some time.

I still read both as those even though I know they're not.

PsychedelicSheep · 11/06/2018 15:37

I can't bear them and so I don't use them. It's not compulsory. I just type kids/daughter/boyfriend whatever instead.

steppemum · 11/06/2018 15:38

I much prefer 'precious fucking baby'
and 'shitty twat bag ex husband'

and all the other homemade versions.
Doesn't matter really, as long as you work out who they are talking about!

Trinity66 · 11/06/2018 15:41

I've kind of gotten used to them now but I did wonder why put "dear" in front of everything?

BlueSapp · 11/06/2018 15:51

I agree original poster.

KinkyAfro · 11/06/2018 16:23

I don't get the dear either, I've never called anyone dear in real life

LoveInTokyo · 11/06/2018 16:27

YADNBU, OP. WinkGrin

Whatshallidonowpeople · 11/06/2018 16:30

Yes, they are annoying. I just read the posts with my own replacement words. Makes you all sound mental

Sparklingbrook · 11/06/2018 16:32

Mental? Confused Bit harsh.

I have stopped even noticing and just read the threads. Don't even think about the 'Dear' thing.

cardibach · 11/06/2018 16:38

AuntieStella isn’t it more of a sociolect?
Geek alert.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 12/06/2018 21:56

MN didn’t invent the “dear” thing - it’s long been around on Internet forums and message boards
