All the abbreviations on here

Am I the only one who gets completely fucked off with all the stupid abbreviations on here?! DS DD DH STBXH DN DGF fucking hell can't people just write it normally? Sometimes you get seven abbreviations in one paragraph it's so annoying trying to remember what mean what!

I miss QQ. Although that may have never been a thing on MN.

EastMidsMummy · 10/06/2018 22:43

Yes, they are a LOOB*..

Husband. Son. Daughter. Mother. None of these words are difficult to type or read, whereas seeing DS or DH or DM automatically mean your brain has to translate them into normal English.

(*Load of old bollocks)

WTFdidwedo · 10/06/2018 22:45

Most forums I frequent use the same abbreviations, it's not an exclusive to Mumsnet thing.

CoughLaughFart · 10/06/2018 22:46

Do you really not know what the hoi polloi is? Confused

Presumably if she did, she wouldn’t have asked.

HTH.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 10/06/2018 22:50

I think I spend too much time on mumsnet. When writing emails and texts I have to translate mumsnet abbreviations back into English for the 'other' people.Grin

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 10/06/2018 22:50

Nope I must confess I had to google hoi polloi Halo

Tessliketrees · 10/06/2018 22:54

@CoughLaughFart

Well played. Grin

lindalee3 · 10/06/2018 22:57

Annoys me too. Isn't unique to the site either. ivillage used to have the daft DH and DC bullshit. And so did a few other sites - around late 1990's..... I rarely use it.

The most ridiculous ones are Dniece and Dcat and Ddog PMSL!! Grin

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 10/06/2018 22:59

But also to clarify:

  1. I know the difference between your and you're
  2. I NEVER write 'of' when it should be 'have'
  3. I sometimes kick arse when playing online scrabble

So whilst I'm not about to run for president I'm not totally dense either Smile

SickofPeterRabbit · 10/06/2018 23:00

@Tessliketrees I've just laughed so hard at that I've woke my DD up!!!

KirstenRaymonde · 10/06/2018 23:01

My brain reads STBXH as shoot the bastard ex husband.

steppemum · 10/06/2018 23:03

you just get used to them. I never have to 'translate' the ordinary ones (dh, dc, dd1 ds2 etc)

I do get irritated with some though DB can be brother or boyfriend, DF can be friend or father etc.

But they are not just used on here, I see the same on many sights, and the HTH, LOL, PMSL are from texting and nothing to do with mumsnet.

There is that one which is an in joke, something like TYNNSS I have never understood it, and I've been on here 15 years

sachabloom · 10/06/2018 23:05

Yanbu

Ski40 · 10/06/2018 23:10

It took me a few posts to work out what PITA was!!! 😂😂😂

VladmirsPoutine · 10/06/2018 23:13

Reading D'animal' for example 'DFish' always makes me want to throw my laptop into the river.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 10/06/2018 23:16

so whilst I'm not about to run for president I'm not totally dense either

Oh i don't know being er in your words dence seems to be a qualification of being president these days

Most of the addrivations on here are nothing to do with mumsnet. They were part of the very early forums anf texting

KioraAdora · 10/06/2018 23:17

Oopsmeagain · 10/06/2018 23:20

OverTheHedgeHammy · 10/06/2018 23:49

I know think DH, DS etc. I have to translate it into real life and need to be extra careful to not say it. Clearly I spend WAY to much time on MN.....
